Herr Thom, das Wacken Open Air ist eines der friedlichsten Festivals in Deutschland. Liegt das am Metal, der dort gespielt wird?
Ja. Ich glaube, dass gerade diese harte Musik es schafft, eventuell vorhandene Aggressionen abzubauen. Wenn man schlecht drauf ist, kann man diese Musik hören, dazu tanzen und laut mitsingen. Dadurch reguliert sich der emotionale Haushalt, das heißt man wird ruhiger und entspannt sich.

Der Christoph schleppt eine Deathmetalband an ein Hippiefestival. Ich frage mich jetzt schon, wo ich all das Popkorn herkriege für dieses Ereignis. So ein geiler Siech! Ja, wir wollen ja ein Festival sein, dass möglichst viele Kulturen und Stilrichtungen beinhaltet. Metal hat bisher gefehlt. Letztes Jahr hatten wir noch darüber gewitzelt, ob wir ein Wacken-Village als Camp machen wollen… Und jetzt spielt einfach eine Metalband!

Und dass es eine PC-Version davon gibt.
Und dass man die gratis herunterladen kann.
Und dass man damit 512 DMX-Kanäle über Art-Net steuern kann.

„Kannst du da nicht etwas mehr Melodie reinbringen?“ Ich zeige meinem Kumpel den Entwurf vom Intro für eine Goaparty und er findet es etwas eintönig. Nein, denn der dauerhafte Summton macht unheimlich Stimmung. Es gefällt mir. Das ist atmosphärisch. Da giesse ich noch Funken und Klirren rein. Es pulsiert. Es schneidet die Luft. Ja, mir fehlt die Musiktheorie, ich weiss nicht was Harmoniefolgen sind und Melodien komponieren – keine Ahnung.

Zwei Uhr morgens. Ich stosse auf die Website von Cryo Chamber. Industrieanlagen in der Ferne. Verlassene Raumstationen, Sendeanlagen, Radarschüsseln. Tropfsteinhöhlen. Ein Polarwinter. Regen. Die Erde im postnuklearen Zustand. Das entfernte Geräusch vom Ofen, der den Kamin unten heizt. Das mystische Surren der weit entfernten Klimaanlage in einem Lüftungsschacht.

OH MEIN GOTT, ich habe meine Musik gefunden! Genau das will ich machen. Mein misslungener Entwurf für das Intro erstrahlt in neuer Dunkelheit: Der dauerhafte Summton heisst „Drohne“ und das ganze nennt sich „Dark Ambient“.

Es scheint, als würde mein Fetisch für summende Antennenanlagen, Lüftungsschächte und Raumschiffgeräusche mit meinem Hang für langanhaltende Dauertöne sich zu einem eigenen Musikstil kulminieren.

I have come to realize several things about the dark ambient genre and its greater community. I would like to share them with you. First off, I’m sure this will be a given for many, but when I say “darkness”, I do not only mean spooky. Darkness in the context of dark ambient manifests itself in a variety of ways. The heartbreak of a lost love. A peaceful walk through the woods on a cool evening. Extra-terrestrial lifeforms visiting our planet. A crackling fire inside an arctic cabin. A mental tour of the cosmos. These are all dark experiences. Dark, just like the man locked inside a cell, hallucinating, as he falls deeper into his insanity. Or, like the raising of evil spirits by means of seance or satanic ritual. The greatest common denominator here seems to be a sense of solitude.

Eine Ballettschule in Küsnacht. „Du machst das Licht, ich den Ton“, sagt David zu mir. Hui, abenteuerlich. Das verwendete Programm heisst ScanShow 5 und bisher habe ich jeweils nur auf die einzelnen Szenen geklickt, an einem Konzert einer Brassband. Da war alles vorbereitet. Doch jetzt -- bin ich selber verantwortlich für die Lichtstimmung, die Szenen und die Effekte; und das mit einer Software, die ich noch gar nicht kenne. Am Mittwoch war Hauptprobe, da definierten wir das Licht für die einzelnen Szenen. „Hier etwas rötlich, da ein ruhiges Blau.“ Hastig und in aller Eile habe ich die Szenen zusammengeklickt, für Effekte hats nicht mehr gereicht. David konnte mir nicht helfen, er war beschäftigt damit, das Brummen der Tonanlage im Saal zu beheben. Das Mischpult brachte keinen Ton heraus, die Ballettschüler bräuchten jetzt aber Musik für die Probe… Ein Mistpult. Zuhause habe ich mir dann für jede Musik die Lichtuntermalung überlegt und konnte Donnerstag und Freitag Nacht erst um 3 Uhr morgens einschlafen, weil ich so unter Strom stand.

Auf YouTube gibt es Videos mit 10h Geräuschen aus dem Inneren von verschiedenen Raumschiffen, Modemrauschen, Hyperraumflug der Millennium Falcon, der Lüftung einer Klimaanlage oder eines Schiffes am Nordpol.

Diese Töne haben was. Ich erinnere mich, als ich im Estrich als Kind andächtig vor dem Kamin stand und dem Ofengeräusch lauschte. Oder im Half-Life vor einem Lüftungsschacht einfach nur eine Minute dastand und diese spezielle Atmosphäre in mich aufnahm. Das hat so etwas sphärisches, mystisches, geheimnisvolles.
