Facebook has 59 million users – and 2 million new ones join each week. But you won’t catch Tom Hodgkinson volunteering his personal information – not now that he knows the politics of the people behind the social networking site.

I despise Facebook. This enormously successful American business describes itself as „a social utility that connects you with the people around you“. But hang on. Why on God’s earth would I need a computer to connect with the people around me? Why should my relationships be mediated through the imagination of a bunch of supergeeks in California? What was wrong with the pub?

And does Facebook really connect people? Doesn’t it rather disconnect us, since instead of doing something enjoyable such as talking and eating and dancing and drinking with my friends, I am merely sending them little ungrammatical notes and amusing photos in cyberspace, while chained to my desk? A friend of mine recently told me that he had spent a Saturday night at home alone on Facebook, drinking at his desk. What a gloomy image. Far from connecting us, Facebook actually isolates us at our workstations.

Aha. Das passiert also, wenn man sich gegen Politiker, Parteien, Medien und Banken auflehnt? Ist das nicht auch eine Form von Zensur? Die Mächtigen™ stellen das „Links“ als gegeben und gut hin, um dann Menschen, die sich gegen das System äussern und auflehnen, zu schikanieren, indem sie sie in die Ecke der stigmatisierten Minderheit drängen. So stellen sie sicher, dass gar nicht erst jemand ihr System in Frage stellt und behalten so ihre Macht.

Wir haben einen Mechanismus entdeckt, der die freie Meinungsäusserung und Diskussion verhindert und „unangenehme Fragen“ nicht aufkommen lässt. Wenn man diesem künstlichen Denksystem Links und Rechts Glauben schenkt, dann dünkt es mich, dass alle immer nur auf den Menschen herumhacken, die sich für die rechte Seite entschieden haben. Wer in einer Gesprächsrunde unter Studenten „ich bin Links“ sagt, dann wird das als gegeben, als normal hingenommen. Ich hab’s noch nie erlebt, dass in einer Studentengruppe ein „ich bin Rechts“ geäussert wurde. Warum ist das so? Warum hat sich die Mehrheit der Gesellschaft auf „Links“ festgelegt und zeigt gegenüber „den Rechten“ keine Toleranz? Ich weiss ja nicht, ob „die Rechten“ tolerant gegenüber „den Linken“ sind, denn ich kenne niemanden, der sich offen zur „rechten Seite“ bekennt. Scheinbar herrscht da ein Stigma. Es scheint, als wären „die Rechten“ eine Minderheit, und alle haben das Gefühl, es gehöre zum guten Ton, auf dieser Minderheit herumzutrampeln. Nutzlos und aufwendig: Thun bricht den Versuch mit Überwachungsvideos im öffentlichen Raum vorzeitig ab.

Keine nachweisbare Wirkung, schlechte Bildqualität und starke rechtliche Einschränkungen: All diese Nachteile haben den Thuner Gemeinderat dazu bewogen, die Videoüberwachung wieder einzustellen.

Der bis 2017 geplante Pilotversuch an fünf Standorten werde vorzeitig beendet, teilte die Stadtregierung am Mittwoch mit. Sollten sich die Voraussetzungen dereinst ändern, will der Gemeinderat die Sache neu beurteilen.

Die Videoüberwachung lief seit 2012. Insgesamt acht Kameras zeichneten in den Nächten auf Freitag, Samstag und Sonntag das Geschehen im öffentlichen Raum auf. Die Stadt wollte so die Sicherheit und das Sicherheitsempfinden erhöhen.

Bildqualität zu schlecht für Beweismittel

Allerdings setzt die Gesetzgebung zum Datenschutz enge Grenzen, wie der Gemeinderat schreibt. So dürfen die Kameras nicht schwenken, und die Aufnahmen müssen nach 100 Tagen automatisch gelöscht werden.

Zudem ist die Qualität der via Internet übermittelten Bilder so schlecht, dass die Aufnahmen nicht als Beweismittel verwendet werden können. Die Kantonspolizei konnte seit Inbetriebnahme der Kameras keinen einzigen Fahndungserfolg melden, der dank Video-Aufnahmen zustande gekommen wäre.

Eine präventive Wirkung der Videoüberwachung könne nicht nachgewiesen werden, schreibt der Gemeinderat weiter. Potenzielle Täter und Störenfriede wüssten ja genau, wo und wie aufgezeichnet werde.

«Die Wirksamkeit der Videoüberwachung ist sehr gering», stellte Sicherheitsvorsteher Peter Siegenthaler (SP) fest. Neue Kameras und eine bessere Übertragungstechnologie würden über 15’000 Franken kosten. «Vorläufig setzen wir diesen Betrag besser für gezielte Polizeikontrollen oder Anpassungen des Auftrags an die privaten Sicherheitsfirmen ein.»

„Die Linken“. „Rechtsextrem.“ „Die Rechten sind Böse.“ „Die Linken sind Böse.“ „Aus Linken Kreisen.“

Bah. Ich kann es nicht mehr hören. Diese willkürliche, völlig bescheuerte Teilung in Links und Rechts. Das sind *Richtungsangaben* und die Politik hat sich diese Begriffe rausgerissen und künstlich entstellt.

Was ist denn überhaupt Links?
Was ist Rechts?

Ich habe bisher sechs Personen gefragt.
Ich erhielt sechs verschiedene Antworten.

So genau weiss das also niemand; aber alle, ALLE reden davon und benutzen diese politischen Begriffe im Alltag.

Was ist denn überhaupt mit oben, vorne, hinten und unten? Ich hatte mal ein Smartvote-Profil ausgefüllt, und die Landkarte blieb leer, weil ich nicht in dieses bescheuerte Links-Rechts Schema passe.
