Eine australische Krankenschwester hat während Jahren Sterbende begleitet. In einem Buch hält sie deren letzte Gedanken fest.

«Hätte ich doch…»: Viele Sterbende realisieren erst wenn es zu spät ist, dass sie ihr Leben anders hätten leben wollen.

Die Australierin Bronnie Ware hat während acht Jahren als Palliativpflegerin in Surrey im Südosten Englands gearbeitet. Hier hat sie Sterbende in den letzten Wochen ihres Lebens begleitet. Während der zahlreichen und ausführlichen Gespräche wurde Bronnie Ware Zeugin, was Menschen im allerletzten Lebensabschnitt bewegt. «Wenn Menschen mit ihrer eigenen Sterblichkeit konfrontiert werden, wachsen sie innerlich», schreibt Ware auf ihrem Blog «Inspiraton and Chai», mit dem sie «Menschen inspirieren will».

Doch als Sterbehelferin hat Ware nicht nur gelernt, das Wachstum «eines Menschen nie zu unterschätzen», sondern sie hat auch die breite Emotionspalette kennen gelernt, die in den letzten Momenten eines Menschen in ihm hochkomme, so Ware. Ärger, Wut, Reue – und meistens ein Rückblick auf das eigene Leben verbunden mit den Gedanken, was man lieber anders gemacht hätte. Diese Erkenntnisse und Erfahrungen mit Sterbenden hat Bronnie Ware nun in ihrem Buch «The Top Five Regrets of the Dying» (Die fünf Dinge, die Sterbende am meisten bereuen) zusammengefasst.

1. «Ich wünschte, ich hätte den Mut gehabt, mein eigenes Leben zu leben»
«Wenn Menschen realisieren, dass sich ihr Leben dem Ende neigt, ist es einfach zu sehen, wie viele Träume unerfüllt verpufft sind. Die meisten der Sterbenden, die ich begleitet habe, hatten nicht einmal die Hälfte ihrer Träume verwirklicht und mussten mit der Gewissheit sterben, dass sie selber dafür verantwortlich waren: Weil sie gewisse Entscheidungen gefällt oder eben nicht gefällt hatten. Statt auf ihre eigenen Bedürfnisse zu hören, hatten sie das Leben gelebt, das andere von ihnen erwartet hatten.»

2. «Ich wünschte, ich hätte nicht so viel gearbeitet»
«Jeder männliche Patient, den ich in den Tod begleitet habe, hat diesen Satz gesagt. Sie bedauerten, die Kindheit ihres Nachwuchses und die Gesellschaft ihrer Partner verpasst zu haben. Zwar äusserten auch Frauen dieses Bedauern, aber weil die meisten von ihnen einer älteren Generation angehörten, waren nur wenige vollberuflich engagiert gewesen. Aber die Männer bereuten ausnahmslos so viel Zeit ihres Lebens in den Tretmühlen der Arbeitswelt verbracht zu haben.»

3. «Ich wünschte, ich hätte den Mut gehabt, meine Gefühle auszudrücken»
«Viele Menschen mit denen ich zu tun hatte, haben ein Leben lang ihre Gefühle ‹der Harmonie willen› unterdrückt. Was dazu führte, dass sie sich mit einem mittelmässigen Dasein zufrieden gaben und sie sich nie zu jenem Menschen entwickeln konnten, der sie wirklich sein wollten. Ich denke, viele Krankheiten sind auf diese Verbitterung und Unzufriedenheit zurückzuführen.»

4. «Ich wünschte, ich wäre mit meinen Freunden in Kontakt geblieben»
«Viele meiner Patienten erkannten erst in ihren letzten Wochen, wie wertvoll ihre Freundschaften waren. Aber sie waren dermassen von ihrem Leben eingespannt gewesen, dass sie ihre Freunde während Jahren vernachlässigt oder ganz aus den Augen verloren hatten. Und jetzt, als sich ihr Leben dem Ende neigte, war es teilweise leider unmöglich diese alten Freunde ausfindig zu machen, um sie noch einmal zu sehen. Ich habe die Erfahrung gemacht, dass jeder Sterbende seine Freunde von früher vermisst.»

5. «Ich wünschte, ich hätte mir erlaubt, glücklicher zu sein»
«So viele Menschen realisieren erst am Ende, dass das Glücklichsein eine persönliche Wahl ist. Statt sich für das Glück zu entscheiden, bleiben viele in alten Mustern und Gewohnheiten gefangen. Die Angst vor Veränderung brachte sie so weit, während Jahren ihrem Umfeld und auch sich selber vorzugaukeln, dass sie zufrieden mit ihrem Leben seien. Obwohl sie sich tief in ihrem Innern danach sehnten, von Herzen zu lachen und wieder echten Spass in ihr Leben zu lassen.»

Ich habe in der letzten Zeit folgendes realisiert. Es gibt keine freie Marktwirtschaft. Man kann nicht einfach so handeln – nein, das wäre ja zu einfach.
Man muss ein Gewerbe anmelden, sich in ein Handelsregister eintragen lassen, und ist Regulationen und Gesetzen unterworfen.

Psychedelics are illegal because they make you question authority. They open your eyes and lead you to question the wrongs of society in a fundamental way. Psychedelics are anti-brainwashing agents.

On April 16, 1943, Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann accidentally dosed himself with minute traces of Lysergic Acid Diethylamide-25 that had been sitting on his chemical shelf for five years just waiting to be unleashed like a magical genie on the world, granting wishes. As the world’s first laboratory-synthesized inner space journey came on, Hofmann began seeing „images of extraordinary plasticity and vividness… accompanied by an intense, kaleidoscopic-like play of colors.“ Three days later, on April 19, Hofmann took the first deliberate LSD trip and, totally, meltingly overcome by the intensity of his experience, was forced to bicycle home and into the history books.

Bicycle Day commemorates that original bicycle trip that changed the world and helped give birth to the psychedelic counterculture movement. The act of coming together is a symbolic gesture for a subculture, not necessarily one involving drugs. Bicycle Day has been celebrated officially around the world since 1986, when the Californian psychedelic community rallied against the dictatorial oppression of the American „War on Drugs“— subverting the propaganda machine of the government by coming together to play, laugh… and ride bikes. What fun!

As part of the global commemoration of psychedelic subculture’s only Holy-day, everyone is invited to celebrate with their own private ride into the Unknown. As group anarchy mutates into organized chaos, you too get to be a part of the organizing committee.

Ich lese gerade das Buch „Thinking, Fast and Slow“ von Daniel Kahnemann, in dem es um psychiologische Effekte beim Denken geht, und möchte euch mal von einem erzählen, den ich besonders faszinierend finde. Es geht das Priming. Stimuli lösen Assoziationsketten aus, soviel ist klar, aber die können auch das Verhalten ändern. In einem Experiment hat das besonders eindrucksvoll gezeigt. Da haben sie Probanden ein paar Wörter gesagt (natürlich unter einer völlig anderen Prämisse) und sie dann in einen anderen Raum geschickt. Wenn die Wörter Begriffe enthielten, die mit alten Menschen assoziiert sind (Wörter wie „Florida“, „vergesslich“, „Falten“, „grau“, aber nicht „alt“ selbst), dann sind die auf dem Weg zu dem anderen Raum langsamer gelaufen.
Wenn man Probanden zu einer grinsenden Gesichtsform bewegt (indem man ihnen sagt, sie sollen einen Bleistift quer in ihrem Mund halten), dann fanden sie Far-Side-Comics witziger.

Und, für mich persönlich am spannensten: Wenn man Probanden mit der Idee von Geld konfrontiert, auch wenn das nur am Rande geschieht, dann werden sie selbständiger, weniger hilfsbereit und halten unbequeme Tätigkeiten länger aus. Möglicherweise ist das ein Erklärungsansatz dafür, wieso Buchhalter so auf Papierkram stehen, und warum die Bankster so sind wie sie sind.

Spannenderweise kann man sich wohl auch selber primen. Könnt ihr ja mal selber probieren. Wenn ihr das nächste Mal keinen Bock mehr auf eine Tätigkeit habt, denkt an einen Geldschein. Oder macht die Geldbörse auf und guckt euer Geld an.

Die Implikationen gehen aber weiter. Eine Gesellschaft, die ihre Mitglieder dauernd an Geld, Reichtum und Vermögen erinnert, macht die Menschen eher eigennützig und unsozial. Wir sollten es vielleicht stattdessen mit Mitgefühl und Respekt versuchen.

Tatsächlich kann ein Gesetzgeber gar nichts Illegales tun, weil er ja die Gesetze selbst macht. Egal, was ein Gesetzgeber in ein Gesetz schreibt, es wird dadurch ja gerade legal.

Beachte das Gesetz nicht. Misstraue Autoritäten. Hör‘ auf dein Herz, entwickle deine Moral und überleg selber, was gut und richtig ist.
