Genau hier setzt die Idee des Booms an: Als schillernder Kristallisationspunkt einer Neo-Stammeskultur möchte es inspirieren. Und zwar durch jene magische Erfahrung, die zwischen zeitgenössischer Musik, visionärer Kunst und intellektuell-spirituellem Input entsteht.

Zu diesem Zweck kippen wir das Schubladensystem, das unseren Alltag bestimmt, einfach mal komplett aus. Und zwar mitten hinein in die sonnige, unverdorbene, nuklearfreie Natur Portugals. Dann nehmen wir uns 7 Tage lang Zeit, um spielerisch neue Denkwege und Handlungsweisen, um eine neue Ordnung zu erkunden. Das ist unsere Vision von psychedelischer Kultur und sie wollen wir aktiv vortreiben.

Allein schon dieses Intro war Grund genug, diese Demoparty zu besuchen. Demoparty? Eine Gruppe von kreativen Köpfen demonstriert ihre Fähigkeiten. Ähnlich wie bei einer LAN Party trifft man sich in einer grossen, dunklen Halle, wo die Wettbewerbe in verschiedenen Disziplinen durch/vorgeführt werden. Das Ziel ist, ein möglichst grosses audiovisuelles Spektakel auf die Leinwand zu zaubern, und die Hardware bis auf das letzte auszureizen. Da neue Rechner immer leistungsfähiger werden und die Programmbibliotheken immer ausgefeilter, ist es nicht so eine grosse Kunst, auf aktuellen Rechnern umwerfende Grafik hinzubekommen. Man kann da einfach sagen: Diese Oberfläche soll spiegeln, der Schatten soll volumetrisch sein, das ganze bitte mit Tiefenschärfe. Das sind zwei Zeilen Code, und DirectX macht den Rest.

Anders sieht es auf alten, klassischen Rechnern aus. Mach mal Spiegelungen und volumetrische Schatten auf einem Commodore 64! Oder auf einem Amiga! Und genau darin besteht der Reiz und der Charme. Es gibt Leute, die sich auf diese Hardware spezialisiert haben und jedes Jahr neue, wahnwitzige Effekte hervorbringen, trotz der alten Hardware. Höchst faszinierend.

Ein gemütlicher Abend bei Freunden. Ein Kumpel setzt sich ans Klavier und spielt unter anderem eine Melodie, die tief in meiner Seele einen Widerhall erzeugt und sich sofort in meinen Schädel einbrennt. „Boah tönt das geil! Was ist das für eine Melodie?“

Jetzt, nach über zwei Monaten, sitze ich im Zug und erinnere mich spontan wieder an diese Melodie. Sie geht mir nicht mehr aus dem Kopf und wiederholt und wiederholt und wiederholt sich. Ein Beat entsteht. Eine zweite Stimme; die könnte man mit Geigen spielen. Oh, und ein Gitarrenteil muss auch noch her. So langsam Dekorieren weitere Instrumente und Melodien in meinem Kopf diese Hauptmelodie.

Es lässt mir keine Ruhe. Ich muss das ganz gschwind runterkomponieren, bevor mir das wieder aus dem Schädel entwischt. MacBook an, Garageband auf. Und sich gleich darüber aufregen, wie beschränkt die Auswahl der Instrumente ist und wie künstlich die klingen.

Die ersten Noten entstehen. Ja, so ungefähr müsste es von der Idee hinhauen. Ich muss mich zwingen, das Lied ohne nach links und nach rechts zu schauen aus meinem Kopf in die Audiospuren zu pressen. Viele «oh das könnte man auch noch» und «das würde auch gut tönen» Verlockungen ignorieren. Ich will das Original abbilden, keine neuen Experimente machen. Da verliert man sich und hat am Schluss gar nichts.

Zwei bunt geschmückte Drachen umrunden eine farbige Säule in der Mitte des Dance Temple und fauchen die Bühne an, welche nach Westen ausgerichtet ist – genau so, dass hinter ihr die Sonne untergeht. Sprinkleranlagen von oben und von der Säule sorgen für die nötige Kühlung in der Mittagshitze. Noch hindern uns Absperrbänder am Betreten des Tempels. Die letzten Vorbereitungen werden getroffen, der Sandboden wird ein letztes mal umgewälzt und geglättet.
