HELLO, EDDIE!

Das war meine Einführung in das Programmieren und die Computertechnik im Allgemeinen: Ich lernte, dass diese Maschinen tun, was sie tun, weil jemand es ihnen auf eine ganz besondere, sehr sorgfältige Weise sagt. Und dass dieser Jemand nicht älter als sieben Jahre sein muss.

Fast sofort begriff ich, welchen Beschränkungen die Spielsysteme unterliegen. Im Vergleich zu Computersystemen waren sie langweilig. Nintendo, Atari, Sega: Bei allen war man auf Levels und Welten beschränkt, die man durchlaufen und sogar besiegen konnte, aber ändern konnte man sie nie. Die reparierte Nintendo-Konsole wanderte wieder ins Wohnzimmer, aber dort ließ ich sie mehr oder weniger links liegen. Ich spielte nur noch mit meinem Vater Mario Kart, Double Dragon oder Street Fighter. Mittlerweile war ich in all diesen Spielen bedeutend besser als er – die erste Tätigkeit, in der ich mich als begabter erwies als mein Vater –, aber hin und wieder ließ ich ihn gewinnen. Er sollte mich nicht für undankbar halten.

Ich bin kein geborener Programmierer und habe mir nie eingebildet, darin besonders gut zu sein. Aber in den nächsten rund zehn Jahren wurde ich immerhin gut genug, um gefährlich zu sein. Bis heute ist es für mich ein magischer Prozess: Man tippt Kommandos in fremden Sprachen ein, die der Computer dann in etwas übersetzt, das nicht nur mir zur Verfügung steht, sondern allen.

Mich faszinierte der Gedanke, dass ein einzelner Programmierer etwas Universelles codieren kann, etwas, was nicht von Gesetzen, Regeln oder Vorschriften eingeschränkt wird außer denen, die sich vollständig auf Ursache und Wirkung zurückführen lassen. Zwischen meiner Eingabe und der Ausgabe bestand ein vollkommen logischer Zusammenhang. Wenn meine Eingabe fehlerhaft war, war auch die Ausgabe fehlerhaft; war meine Eingabe fehlerfrei, war es die Ausgabe des Computers ebenso. Nie zuvor hatte ich etwas so Einheitliches und Gerechtes gesehen, etwas so eindeutig Unvoreingenommenes. Ein Computer wartete ewig darauf, mein Kommando entgegenzunehmen, verarbeitete es aber in dem Augenblick, in dem ich auf Enter drückte, ohne irgendwelche Fragen zu stellen. So geduldig und doch so zugänglich war kein Lehrer jemals gewesen. Nirgendwo sonst – mit Sicherheit nicht in der Schule und nicht einmal zu Hause – hatte ich das Gefühl, etwas so umfassend kontrollieren zu können. Dass eine fehlerfrei geschriebene Reihe von Kommandos fehlerfrei immer und immer wieder die gleichen Tätigkeiten auslöste, erschien mir – wie auch so vielen anderen schlauen, technik-affinen Kindern des neuen Jahrtausends – als einzig stabile, rettende Wahrheit unserer Generation.

Die Eigenverantwortung ist in Amerika irgendwann zwischen der Kindheit meines Vaters und meiner Kindheit in Vergessenheit geraten.

Wir lebten jetzt in einem Land, in dem der Preis für den Ersatz eines defekten Geräts durch ein neueres Modell in der Regel niedriger war als die Reparaturkosten bei einem Fachmann, und die waren wiederum in der Regel niedriger als die Kosten, die man hatte, wenn man die Reparatur selbst durchführte.

Allein diese Tatsache führte zu einer technologischen Tyrannei, die nicht nur durch die Technologie selbst aufrechterhalten wurde, sondern durch das Unwissen aller, die sich ihrer täglich bedienten und sie doch nicht verstanden. Wenn man sich nicht über die grundlegende Funktionsweise und Instandhaltung der Geräte informierte, auf die man angewiesen war, nahm man die Tyrannei passiv hin und unterwarf sich ihren Bedingungen:

Wir sitzen am Feuer, es dunkelt ein. Unsere Kommune ist selbstorganisiert, selbstversorgend und selbstverwaltet. Gemütliche Strohballenhäuser halten die Temperaturen im Winter warm und im Sommer kühl. Komposttoiletten und biologische Wasseraufbereitungsanlagen verwandeln Abfallstoffe zurück in Nährstoffe. Jeder hat seinen Stamm, seine Gleichgesinnten, wo er sich zuhause fühlen kann: Geborgen, ermutigt, bestätigt und respektiert in seiner ganzen Seinsart, Eigenart und Vielfalt. Auf der ganzen Welt haben sich Menschen zu Kommunen zusammengeschlossen und leben in ihren natürlichen Kulturkreisen, jede mit ihren Eigenarten und Spezialitäten. Überregional schliesst man sich zu einer Föderation zusammen, die immer aus wechselnden Mitgliedern der Kommunen besteht. Manchmal gehen Kinder zur Föderation und vertreten ihre Interessen. Sie haben eine Stimme und werden als vollwertiges Mitglied der Gesellschaft gezählt und respektiert, denn sie können uns vieles zeigen. Jeder Mensch findet irgendwo seine Aufgabe, ist aber nicht gezwungen, nach einer zu suchen, oder seine Tätigkeit mit anderen zu vergleichen und messen. Da gibt es Milchhändler, Imker, Netzwerkspezialisten, Händler, Schreiner, Geschichtenerzähler, Musiker, Tierfreunde und Gärtner – oder gleich Menschen mit allem zusammen. So genaue Grenzen wie „einen Beruf“ gibt es nicht. Wir sind nicht am arbeiten, sondern am spielen. Talente werden spontan entdeckt und weiterverfolgt, in dem man einander über die Schulter schaut. Dann aber auch die Gilde der Informationsritter, die sich mit dem zur Verfügung stellen und der Verbreitung von Information befasst; also Netzwerk, Kryptografie, Speicherdienste, Hosting, Sendestationen, Datenübertragung. Jeder hat seine eigene Sendestation, mit der er Informationen in Text, Bild und Ton verbreiten kann. Die Gilde der Blumenwächter schützt und erhält seltene Arten. Baumwächter und Waldhirten forsten den Wald auf und bestimmen Schutzzonen, die den Hauptbestandteil des Waldes ausmachen, und die Zonen für Brennholz. In jeder Gilde finden sich Menschen im Alter von 1-130 Jahren, und wenn Menschen mit viel Erfahrung auf Frischlinge treffen, lernen die Kleinen sehr schnell und vor allem: Praktische Fähigkeiten. Dank der Gilde der Nuklearphysik steht in jeder Kommune ein Reaktor, der die Energie aus dem Raum selbst transponiert. Kunst ist überall. Jeder Tag ein Fest. Der Umgang mit psychotropen Hilfsmitteln ist bewusst und wird für verschiedene Situationen angemessen genutzt und wirkt bereichernd. Es gibt ganze Archive voller Wissen und Bücher, wo die Geschichte, Forschung und Erkenntnisse bewahrt werden. Jeder hat dazu freien Zugang. Die Gilde der Raumfahrt entwickelt an geeigneten Plätzen Raumschiffe.
