In einem Interview in der aktuellen Ausgabe von Technology Review beklagt Jacob Appelbaum, dass Firmen und die US-Regierung zu großen Einfluss auf vitale Teile des Internets hätten. „Das müssen wir ändern. Dafür brauchen wir nicht das alte System vollständig aufzugeben, aber wir müssen es erweitern.“ Vor allem müsse es mithilfe von Peer-to-Peer-Netzwerken dezentralisiert werden und durch alternative Namensverzeichnisse wie GNS die derzeitige Hoheit von Verisign bei der Namensvergabe von Adressen aufzuteilen.
Appelbaum sieht als großen Schwachpunkt in der globalen Kommunikation das derzeitige E-Mail-System. „Diese Technologie ist nicht gut genug.“ Sie biete Privatsphäre „auf dem Niveau des 19. Jahrhunderts“, so Appelbaum. Es gebe keine Möglichkeit, E-Mail in der derzeitigen Form sicher zu machen. Auch das Verschlüsselungsverfahren PGP sei keine Alternative, „weil es nicht hundertprozentig sicher und zudem ein Albtraum in Sachen Benutzerfreundlichkeit ist.“
Zuversichtlich ist Appelbaum hinsichtlich Verschlüsselung. „Ich glaube nicht, dass es der NSA gelingen wird, unsere besten Verschlüsselungssysteme zu knacken. Die Mathematik ist zu gut.“ Trotzdem müssten noch manche Probleme gelöst werden, zum Beispiel das der Folgenlosigkeit und des Schutzes der Metadaten. Das größte Problem sieht Appelbaum aber nicht in der Verschlüsselungstechnik sondern im Zugang zu ihr: „Sichere Verschlüsselung muss Standard sein – und zwar in jedem Smartphone.“
Ein neues Internet muss her! Aktuell pusten wir unsere Daten standardmässig im Klartext durchs Netz. In Zeiten, wo die NSA global alles abhört und aufzeichnet. Tragisch, dass die Verschlüsselung der Netze nicht standard ist.

Could people please not use this list to announce information of no particular interest to the people on the list? Hundreds of thousands of babies are born every day. While the whole phenomenon is menacing, one of them by itself is not newsworthy. Nor is it a difficult achievement–even some fish can do it. (Now, if you were a seahorse, it would be more interesting, since it would be the male that gave birth.)
Following your example, I might send the list an announcement whenever a new GNU program is written. That happens less often than babies are born, it does the world a lot more good, it reflects more conscious creativity and hard work, and some of the readers might actually find the information useful. Even so, I think most of the readers would consider this outside the scope and purpose of the list. Clearly that goes double for babies.
Of course, we have another place for announcements of new GNU programs. If some people like to read birth announcements, perhaps you should set up a suitable list or newsgroup. Perhaps rec.births? (While you’re at it, start rec.deaths for obituaries–they’re usually more interesting to read.)
These birth announcements also spread the myth that having a baby is something to be proud of, which fuels natalist pressure, which leads to pollution, extinction of wildlife, poverty, and ultimately mass starvation.
Perhaps the people who have decided to have no children should start making proud announcements, so as to set a better example. I could start. I’m sure everyone on this list will be glad to know I don’t plan to reproduce myself.

Um deinem Beispiel zu folgen, könnte ich dieser Liste jedesmal eine Ankündigung schreiben, wenn ein neues GNU-Programm geschrieben wird. Das passiert weniger oft als Babies geboren werden; aber es tut der Welt mehr Gutes; es reflektiert mehr bewusste Kreativität und harte Arbeit, und einige der Leser könnten diese Information nützlich finden. Item, ich denke die meisten der Leser sehen diesen fehlenden Kontext und den eigentlichen Zweck der Liste. Das gilt doppelt für Babies.
Natürlich haben wir andere Orte für Ankündigungen von GNU-Programmen. Wenn ihr unbedingt Geburtsanzeigen lesen wollt, dann richtet doch eine entsprechende Liste dafür ein. Vielleicht rec.births? (Wenn ihr schon dabei seid: rec.deaths für Todesanzeigen – die sind normalerweise viel interessanter zu lesen.)
Diese Geburtsanzeigen verbreiten auch den Mythos, dass Kinder haben etwas ist, worauf man stolz sein könne – was den Pronatalismus fördert, und das führt zu mehr Verschmutzung, Aussterben von Wildtieren, Armut und schlussendlich zu einer grossen Hungersnot.
Vielleicht sollten die Menschen, die sich entschieden haben, keine Kinder zu haben, anfangen, das stolz anzukündigen, um ein besseres Beispiel zu geben. Ich könnte damit anfangen. Ich bin sicher, jeder auf dieser Liste würde sich freuen, dass ich nicht plane, mich fortzupflanzen.
