[Das Buch] sagte ihm eigentlich nichts Neues, doch gerade das machte einen Teil seiner Anziehungskraft aus. Es sprach das aus, was er gesagt haben würde, hätte er Ordnung in seine konfusen Gedanken bringen können. Das Buch stammte von einem ihm verwandten Geist, der aber unendlich viel stärker, systematischer und weniger angstgepeinigt war. Die besten Bücher, stellte er fest, sind die, die einem sagen, was man bereits weiss.

Von einem Parteimitglied wird erwartet, dass es keine privaten Gefühle besitzt und sein Enthusiasmus nie erlahmt. Es soll in dauerndem Hass auf ausländische Feinde und innere Verräter, in ständigem Siegestaumel und in unablässiger Selbstdemütigung vor der Macht und Weisheit der Partei leben. Der aus seinem kargen, unbefriedigenden Leben resultierende Missmut wird gezielt nach aussen gelenkt, und die Überlegungen, die eventuell zu einer skeptischen oder rebellischen Haltung führen könnten, werden durch seine früherworbene innere Disziplin von vornherein unterbunden. Die erste und einfachste Stufe dieser Disziplin kann sogar schon kleinen Kindern beigebracht werden und heisst in Neusprech: Delstop. Delstop bezeichnet die Fähigkeit, geradezu instinktiv auf der Schwelle jedes riskanten Gedankens haltzumachen. Es schliesst die Gabe mit ein, Analogien nicht zu begreifen, logische Fehler zu übersehen, die simpelsten Argumente misszuverstehen, wenn sie Engsoz-feindlich sind, und von jedem Gedankengang, der in eine ketzerische Richtung führen könnte, gelangweilt und abgestossen zu werden. Kurz gesagt, Delstop bedeutet schützende Dummheit.

Schon der Gebrauch des Wortes Doppeldenk erfordert Doppeldenk. Denn indem man das Wort gebraucht, gibt man zu, die Realität zu verfälschen; durch die erneute Anwendung von Doppeldenk löscht man dieses Wissen aus: und so unbegrenzt weiter, wobei die Lüge der Wahrheit immer um einen Schritt voraus ist.

Es hatte lediglich das Wissen systematisiert, das er bereits besass. Doch nachdem er [das Buch] gelesen hatte, wusste er sicherer als zuvor, dass er nicht verrückt war. Eine Minderheit zu sein, sogar eine Einzelpersonenminderheit zu sein, stempelte einen nicht zu einem Verrückten. Es gab die Wahrheit, und es gab die Unwahrheit, und wenn man an der Wahrheit festhielt, sei es auch gegen die ganze Welt, dann war man nicht verrückt.

Geistige Gesundheit ist keine Frage der Statistik.
