Eine neue Studie des Wissenschaftlers Jon Penney von der Universität von Oxford beweist, was Datenschützer und Bürgerrechts-Aktivisten schon lange betonen: massive Überwachung sorgt für Angst, Selbstzensur und konformistisches Verhalten. Sie schädigt die Meinungsfreiheit und den offenen, demokratischen Austausch von Wissen und Ideen. Nachdem es für dieses Phänomen nun derart aufwändig erhobene Beweise gibt, wird es Zeit, dass es endlich ernst genommen und vor allem entsprechend gehandelt wird. Überwachung muss eingeschränkt werden, um die Demokratie zu schützen.

Neue Studie: Wikipedia-Nutzer haben Angst vor Überwachung

Kürzlich wurde eine Studie des Forschers Jon Penney von der Universität Oxford veröffentlicht, die sich mit den Auswirkungen von Internet-Überwachung auf das Verhalten von Nutzern des Online-Lexikons  beschäftigt.

In der Studie konnten Penney und sein Team beweisen, dass Überwachung tatsächlich massive Auswirkungen darauf hat, wie sich die Wikipedia-Nutzer verhalten. Nach dem bekannt werden der massiven NSA-Überwachung großer Teile des Internet (unter anderem durch das PRISM-Programm, das zu den ersten Snowden-Enthüllungen gehörte), wurden kontroverse Artikel weitaus seltener abgerufen.

Im November 2016 wird die Schweizer Post die Bezahl-App TWINT für Smartphones einführen, mit der an vielen Kassen bargeldlos bezahlt werden soll. Auch Überweisungen zwischen Privatpersonen können getätigt werden. In ihrem Magazin rühmt die Post diese neue Technologie als „völlig neues Einkaufserlebnis“, welches das lästige Hantieren mit Münzen und Papiergeld überflüssig macht. Zahlreiche Länder haben solche Bezahlsysteme bereits eingeführt und verzeichnen groβe  Zuwachsraten. Auch in der Schweiz stehe das Bezahlen mit dem Handy vor dem Durchbruch. Die SBB möchte sich ebenfalls daran beteiligen. Auch in allen Geschäften des Detailhandelsunternehmens Coop soll nächstens damit bezahlt werden können.

Die zahlreichen Nachteile dieser Technologie werden im euphorischen Artikel des PostMagazins dabei auβer Acht gelassen: Diese Technologie lockt durch die angebliche Einfachheit die Kunden vom Bargeld weg und ermöglicht es den Unternehmen somit alles zu dokumentieren und aufzuzeichnen, was, wo und wann jemand einkauft. Die Einführung von TWINT muss deshalb als weiterer Schritt in Richtung Bargeldverbot, Smartphone-Zwang und Totalüberwachung eingestuft werden.

Im gleichen Augenblick wird auch jede weitere leuchtende Sonne und jeder weitere Stern, ja, werden sogar zahllose schon seit langem gestorbene Sonnen gleichermaßen davon beeinflusst. Es gibt nicht das kleinste Partikel kosmischen Staubes, das nicht aufgrund dieser meiner Tat in seiner Richtung verändert wird, sei er weit entfernt und winzig oder nah und riesig.

Was passiert, wenn bekannt ist, dass die Kommunikation und die Präsenz im öffentlichen Raum überwacht wird? Kein Problem, sagen die Sicherheitsbefürworter. Herausgepickt werden nur die Bösen, wer sich nichts zu Schulden kommen lässt, hat nichts zu befürchten – und braucht sein Verhalten nicht zu ändern. Das ist natürlich Unsinn, denn die Menschen, nicht nur die Bösewichter, passen ihr Verhalten dort an, wo sie glauben, beobachtet zu werden. Das ist so ähnlich, wie sich das Verhalten im Straßenverkehr verändert, wenn ein Polizeiauto zu sehen ist. Plötzlich werden Raser und Drängler zu Fahrern, die sich gewissenhaft an die Verkehrsregeln achten.

I would like to inform you of a very important and serious incident that is about to take place in Texas prisons very soon, and will go unnoticed if the media don’t report on it.

There is not much said on the news about prisons, specifically Texas prisons. The government tells the public, “We are waging a war on crime and on drugs.” They use and manipulate crime rates for political reasons. Truth is, people don’t understand or care about crime rate statistics or prisoners. All they care about is unemployment and taxes; not knowing that the “prisons” issue affects these very problems. The public see prisoners as a burden for the law-abiding tax paying citizen. What they fail to see is the root of the problem, who creates it? and the reasons behind it. [mehr…]

Mein Geschirrspüler ist verstopft. Kalk. Am neuen Wohnort ist das Wasser härter, und ich hätte da Salz hinzugeben müssen.

„Du bist der einzige, der zugibt, dass er kein Salz beigegeben hat. Alle anderen [Vorgänger] haben immer behauptet, sie hätten das getan.“

Sagt mein Vermieter, sichtlich beeindruckt. Aber ja, wieso sollte ich das auch nicht tun, nicht zugeben? Ich will, dass das Ding wieder läuft! Es war ja so, und für mich ist es normal, die Geschehnisse so zu beschreiben, wie sie sind, damit man den Fehler möglichst schnell eingrenzen und das Problem beheben kann. Aber so langsam realisiere ich, dass das gar nicht so normal ist, gemäss der Aussage meines Vermieters. Was muss das für Rotz gewesen sein, der da als Vormieter gehaust hat. Leute, die glauben, sich mit Geschichten und Ausreden kurzzeitig Vorteile zu verschaffen? Natürlich war es meine Schuld, die Kosten nehme ich auf meine Kappe.

Auf lange Sicht zahlt sich diese Investition in die Wahrheit mehr aus. Es baut Vertrauen auf. Sollte irgendwann wieder mal etwas sein, glaubt mir der Vermieter. Das ist mir mehr Wert, als die kurzfristige Einsparung. Ich kann die Wahrheit sagen, und man glaubt mir auch. So richtig realisiere ich das erst jetzt, wie viel Wert das eigentlich ist, und die Geschichte versprüht ein warmes Nachglühen, an das ich mich gerne erinnere. Was so etwas „Belangloses“ für eine Wirkung hat und für Weichen stellen kann!

A manifesto against Sustainable Events Standard ISO 20121

We are not dancing to this song. Yes, you heard us right.

We do not believe all things should be normal, normatized, normalized, regulated, standardized, regimented or modulated. The new ISO 20121 (Sustainable Events Standard) does not make things better, does not make the world a better place for humankind nor for other species. And yes, we know we have provided significant contribution to sustainability and good examples of how to WALK the talk. However, we must stay out of this one as we do not think that affirming corporate delusion is the way to go.
