Diana gibt sich als Parfümverkäuferin aus und wandert von Stockwerk zu Stockwerk, von Tür zu Tür, bis sie an der „richtigen Tür“ angelangt ist, wo sie den Bewohnern ein verlockendes Spezialangebot macht. Halim ist Forscher mit Spezialkenntnissen zu Kernenergie und hat Zugang zu sensiblen Informationen. Seine Frau hat eine Schwäche für Parfüms. Dies haben andere Agenten bereits herausgefunden, und so stehen die Chancen gut, dass die Frau des Atomwissenschaftlers der Parfümverkäuferin Diana Einlass gebietet. Die beiden Frauen werden über die Zeit gute Freunde, Details sickern durch, dass ihr Mann Halim in zwei Wochen in den Irak fahren wird.

Jetzt tritt ein anderer Agent mit dem Tarnnamen Donovan in Erscheinung. Diana hat ihn vermittelt, nachdem sie „erfahren“ hatte, dass Halim sich mit Kernphysik auskennt. Der als Geschäftsmann getarnte Agent hat ein (gestelltes) Problem und bittet Halim um Hilfe. Halim kann es lösen und kriegt dafür 100’000.- als Belohnung. Er hat Donovan durch seine Hilfe eine Einsparung in Millionenhöhe ermöglicht, und diese kleine Geste sei kein Problem.

Bing, das Vertrauen ist hergestellt. Donovan fragt Halim, ob er ihm für ein Geschäft helfen könnte. „Spezialdruckbehälter, hochkompliziertes Material. Ich habe keine Ahnung davon.“ „Da kann ich helfen“, antwortet ihm Halim.

So geht das immer weiter, bis der Mossad letztendlich den Standort des Reaktors herausbekommt, an dem der Irak seit 3 Jahren arbeitet. In einer modernen Variante des Trojanischen Pferds haben die Israelis ein Team von fünf Neviot-Saboteuren und einen Atomphysiker, alle in normaler Strassenkleidung, in einem grossen Metall-Container versteckt und als Teil des Konvois aus drei Lastwagen in den Sicherheitsbereich geschleust. Ihre Informationen basieren auf den Angaben von Halim. Sie wissen, dass Wächter bei Abtransporten immer wachsamer als bei Lieferungen sind. Der Atomphysiker wurde aus Israel eingeflogen, um zu bestimmen, wo die Sprengladungen an den gelagerten Reaktorkernen angebracht werden müssten, um den grössten Schaden anzurichten.

So oder ähnlich führt ein Geheimdienst Operationen durch. Da steckt mehr dahinter, als bloss ein weisser VAN mit getönten Scheiben am Strassenrand, der ein Haus beschattet. Die besten Informationen kriegt der Dienst durch HUMINT, Human Intelligence; menschliche Quellen. Eine Zielperson wird analysiert. Was sind ihre Stärken, ihr Wissen, ihre Schwächen? Mit welchen Problemen kämpft er gerade, und wie kann man ihm aus der Patsche helfen?

Oh, er ist Geschäftsmann und handelt mit Schiffen? Man findet heraus, dass er öfters in der Bücherei anzutreffen ist. Zwei Agenten stehen ein Bücherregal neben ihm und Agent A bedankt sich lautstark bei Agent B für den grossartigen Schiffhandel, den die beiden gerade abgeschlossen haben, um die Zielperson zu rekrutieren. Denn jetzt wird die Zielperson hellhörig; nach langem suchen „trifft“ sie wie „zufällig“ auf einen „Geschäftsmann“, der ihr wohl attraktive Handelsangebote machen kann.

Oh, er hat eine Schwäche für guten Wein? Eine Flasche Wein im Gang vor seiner Wohnung „ausversehen“ fallenlassen, klingeln, ob man beim Aufwischen helfen könne, und anbieten, die zweite Flasche gemeinsam in der Wohnung der Zielperson zu trinken.

Was als ganz harmlose Information an einen vertrauten Freund erscheinen mag, ist möglicherweise das letzte Puzzleteil einer grösseren Operation, die wenig später Kampfjets mit Luft-Boden Raketen losfliegen lässt.

Aber ja, die Frau des Atomphysikers „hat ja nichts zu verbergen“, sie liebt Parfüm. Der andere hatte ebenfalls nichts zu verbergen; er ist bloss ein Schiffhändler und geht amigs in die Bücherei.

Jede Information kann vom Geheimdienst zur Manipulation benutzt werden; sei es auch nur als Teilschritt für eine nächste Operation.

Ein Geheimdienst infiziert Freundschaften. Er lenkt die Geschichte und stubst die Kugel des Schicksals immer genau in die Richtung, die er haben will.

Glossar

Ein Rekrut ist eine vom Mossad angepeilte Zielperson, die Informationen liefert. Also ein Agent, aber oft weiss er nichts davon, dass er rekrutiert wurde.

Ein Katsa ist ein Agentenführer, also ein Mossad-Operateur, der mit Zielpersonen interagiert und sie rekrutiert.

Der Mossad besitzt (zum Zeitpunkt des Buches) nur 35 Katsas. Seine Stärke gewinnt er durch die vielen freiwilligen jüdischen Helfer ausserhalb Israels. Diese werden Sayanim genannt (Einzahl: Sayan). Sie sind Autohändler, Ärzte, Bankbesitzer, Hauseigentümer, Postboten, Zollangestellte. Da wird ein Wagen für einen Einsatz gebraucht, und der Händler soll nicht zu viele Fragen stellen? Eine Kugel soll herausoperiert werden ohne eine Meldung an die Polizei? Ein schwarzes Konto soll eröffnet werden? Eine Wohnung in der Nähe einer Zielperson gemietet werden? All das kann der Mossad mit den Sayanim bewerkstelligen und dies ermöglicht ihm seine schlanke Struktur. Wo eine vergleichbare CIA-Station tausende Angestellte beschäftigt, benötigt eine Mossad-Station nur eine Handvoll.

Er führt ein Lager mit allen Papiersorten der Welt, um Pässe und Ausweisdokumente originalgetreu nachzubilden. Dabei gilt: Kein französischer Pass in Frankreich, kein englischer Pass in England. Die Behörden haben es viel schwieriger, wenn sie einen ausländischen Ausweis kontrollieren müssen.

In der Grundausbildung lernt man, wie man Geheimverstecke (sog. „Slicks„) anlegt – für Waffen, Geld oder andere Gegenstände.

Sichere Häuser (Safehouses) sind private Wohnungen als Stützpunkt für Operationen.

Ein Geheimgericht ist nicht etwa ein Gerichtssaal ohne Schild, sondern ebenfalls eine Privatwohnung. Der Richter, Strafverteidiger und Gerichtsschreiber spielen ihr Rollenspiel in dieser Privatwohnung durch, und am Schluss fällt ein Stempel auf das Dokument mit den Personen, die liquidiert werden sollen.
In der Zeitung lesen wir dann, dass die Exekution ja ganz offiziell von einem geheimen Gericht so genehmigt wurde.

Marats sind die Abhörer; zwei Agenten und ein Psychologe hören mit, um von der Zielperson ein psychologisches Profil zu erstellen.

Der Kidon ist die Abteilung beim Mossad, die sich um Operationen kümmert, die Gewalt erfordern.

Die Entwicklungsabteilung stellt Einsatzmaterial her; Spezialschlösser, Koffer mit doppeltem Boden etc.

Maslut, „Route“. Ein Absicherungssystem, um herauszufinden, ob man observiert wird oder nicht. Auf Umwegen zum Ziel gelangen, zwei-dreimal extrafalsch abbiegen und so weiter.

„Tageslicht“ ist die höchste Alarmbereitschaft einer Mossad-Station.

Das Buch ist ein wunderbarer Augenöffner und hat mir mehr Einblick hinter die Kulissen gegeben, als Snowden und die ganze Meute es jemals getan haben.

Mit diesen Erkenntnissen erscheint auch Köbis Panikmache vor zwei Jahren in einem anderen Licht.

Der Mossad verkauft einem General über seine Assistentin einen Tisch und präpariert ihn entsprechend mit Mikrofonen. Nichts neues, das ist Geheimdienst-Standardvorgehen. Also Köbi, halt deine Fresse und hör auf mit dieser Panikmache. Der Effekt davon ist, dass jetzt alle Leute denken: „Die NSA kommt eh überall rein, es nützt eh nichts, ich kann mich nicht wehren.“

Man kann sich immer wehren. Die Geheimdienste kochen zwar mit brühend heissem Wasser in vielen tausend Dampfkochtöpfen rund um den Erdball, aber letztendlich ist und bleibt es Wasser. Es gibt sie, die Methoden der Spionageabwehr, und es funktioniert. „Terroristen“ sind darauf trainiert und gewinnen immer. Die Massenüberwachung trifft immer nur alle anderen.
