Eine Plastikflasche braucht beispielsweise 450 Jahre, um komplett zu zerfallen. In Großbritannien setzten Forscher nun auf spezielle Bakterien, um die Umweltverschmutzung in den Griff zu bekommen.

Das neue Enzym zersetzt Plastik viel schneller

Der gefräßige Mikroorganismus ‚Ideonella Sakaiensis‘ ist der Forschung schon länger bekannt. Wissenschaftler entdeckten, dass die Bakterien sich auf Flaschen ansiedelten und das Plastik mithilfe eines Enzyms verdauten. Das Problem war bisher nur, dass es immer noch lange dauerte, bis das Plastik komplett zersetzt war. Für eine dünne Plastikfolie brauchten die Bakterien rund 60 Wochen.

Wissenschaftler experimentierten nun mit dem Enzym, das die Bakterien zum Verdauen des Plastiks brauchen. „Wir haben das Erbgut herausgenommen und mit dem Enzym herum-experimentiert und bei diesem Vorgang haben wir durch Zufall ein schnelleres Enzym entwickelt“, erklärte John McGeehan, Professor an der Universität Portsmouth. Die Bakterien schaffen es jetzt, in 96 Stunden eine komplette Plastikflasche zu zerlegen.

From Aboriginal ‘Walkabout’ to Vision Quests and Sacred Pilgrimages, mankind has always known the healing power of walking and interacting with the land. Modern spiritual and multi-faith pilgrimage is on the rise. In this talk, Angharad shares her insights into the power of what she calls ‘Dreaming the Land’, the act of walking and connecting to the landscape’s stories, history, archaeology, ancestors and spirits, as a way to heal both people and place. Insights are drawn from ten years experience of guiding groups on spiritual and creative expeditions across the wild places of Britain, and offered as a framework for all to re-wilden and undertake dreaming quests across their native or local landscapes.

Bild: Strohballenhaus in I-Kurtatsch

Ein warmer Duft von weichem Holz schlägt mir entgegen, als ich in das Strohballenhaus eintrete. Riesige Glasfronten fluten den Raum mit Tageslicht. Die Wände sind aus Holz, getäfert. In diesen Wänden befindet sich: Gepresstes Stroh.

Im oberen Stockwerk brennt ein Feuer im Cheminee und taucht die Raumatmosphäre in eine friedlich-warme, glitzerig-weich funkelnde Atmosphäre ein, in der man sich gleich geborgen, behütet und zuhause fühlt. „Genial!“, ist mein erster Eindruck. Dieses Raumklima, diese Wärme, die von den Wänden ausstrahlt – Holz, Stroh, Natur. Es ist mucksmäusschen still, obwohl das Haus relativ nahe an der Strasse steht.

Das hätte ich nicht gedacht. Wie kommt es, dass alle Arschitekten so auf Minergie abgeilen, und ständig nur diese gruusigen, kalten Betonklötze hinstellen; mit teuren, künstlichen Isolationsmaterialien – wo doch die effizientiste und natürlichste Isolation gleich vom Bauern nebenan zu haben ist?

Ich kannte Strohballenhäuser bislang nicht. Warum kennt das niemand?
