The concept is now under production. This is probably the coolest development in wind technology ever. It’s a vision of a magnetically levitated wind turbine that can generate one gigawatt of power (enough to power 750,000 homes). This is the device proposed by a new Arizona-based company, MagLev Wind Turbine Technologies. The company claims that it can deliver clean power for less than one cent per kilowatt hour using this wind turbine. It is being regarded as a key breakthrough in the evolution of global wind power technology, boosting generation capacity by as much as 20% over traditional wind turbines, and dropping operational costs by as much as 50%.

Ich glaub, ich habe bald ein neues Hobby! Vor kurzem bin ich zufällig darauf gestossen: Geocaching.

„Sucht nach einer schwarzen Plastikbox, die vergraben ist“, stand am 3. Mai 2000 im Internet zu lesen. „Nehmt euch etwas, lasst dafür etwas da! Tragt alles ins Log-Buch ein! Viel Spass!“

Dave Ulmer aus dem US-Bundesstaat Oregon hatte das geschrieben. Er vergrub einen wasserdichten Plastikeimer mit Videos, Büchern und Kleinigkeiten in einem Wald bei Portland und veröffentlichte die Koordinaten in einer Newsgroup.

Und das war der Beginn von Geocaching. Und so verstecken weltweit 40’000 Benutzer ihre Caches, bestehend aus Tupperwareboxen, Filmdosen oder Munitionskisten. Weltweit sind fast 400’000 Caches versteckt, 4’000 davon in der Schweiz.

Heute kam ein interessanter Bericht über Kollektoren in Schweiz Aktuell. Im Bericht wurde eine CH-Firma vorgestellt, die Kollektoren produziert, die auch bei Bewölkung funktionieren. Ihre Kollektoren wandeln 80% der diffusen Strahlung in nutzbare Energie um. Das tönt interessant, weil genau das bisher das Problem der Sonnenenergie-Nutzung in der Schweiz war: Die vielen Wolken.

Die US-Fachzeitschrift Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists hat ihre Weltuntergangsuhr um zwei Minuten weiter auf fünf vor zwölf gestellt. Die Uhrzeit soll ein Maß dafür angeben, wie nahe die Menschheit nach Ansicht der BAS-Experten dem „Ende der Zivilisation“ ist. Die Uhr wurde seit ihrer Erfindung 1947 insgesamt 17-mal verstellt, zuletzt im Februar 2002 in der Folge der Terroranschläge vom 11. September 2001 in den USA. Die Entscheidung über eine Veränderung der Uhr trifft der BAS-Aufsichtsrat gemeinsam mit einem Sponsorenrat, in dem 18 Nobelpreisträger vertreten sind.
