Zwei Go-Binaries, direkt ausführbar: prometheus und node_exporter
node_exporter: Läuft auf dem System, von dem man Monitoringwerte auslesen will und stellt sie zur Verfügung
prometheus: Monitoring-Dienst, der die Werte von allen node_exportern holt und speichert

In diesem Beispiel:

node_exporter hat „textfile collectors“ aktiviert
holt sich Textdateien im Verzeichnis /var/lib/textfile_collectors
Debian-Version wird als Text in dieses Verzeichnis gespeichert, kann von beliebigen Skripts erstellt werden
node_exporter stellt seine Werte unter http://zielhost:9000/metrics zur Verfügung
unser erstellter Wert wird nun dort angezeigt

Dann auf dem Monitoringserver:

Starte prometheus -config.file=prometheus.yml
prometheus.yml: Welche Hosts und wie oft?
Prometheus-Interface läuft auf http://monitoringserver:9090
debian_version ist dort verfügbar

Optional:

Alertmanager: Mehrstufige Alarmierung mit Eskalationsebenen, Trendalarmierung (=wenn der Speicherplatz so weiterschrumpft wie jetzt, haben wir in X Tagen keinen Platz mehr; Alarm!)

Diese unbesonnene Sprache mag ein Ergebnis von Barlows Umständen gewesen sein, als er sich hinsetzte, um seine Erklärung zu schreiben. Sechs Jahre ist es her, dass er die Internet Digital Rights Group EFF mitbegründet hatte, und nun war Barlow auf dem Weltwirtschaftsforum 1996 in Davos, Schweiz, vertreten. Mitten auf einer Party am gestrigen Abend erkannte er, dass die Deadline für einen Beitrag zum Kompendium „24 Hours In Cyberspace“ kurz bevorstand. Barlow hatte die letzten vier Tage in Davos damit verbracht, den Weltführern zuzuhören, wie er es beschreibt, und so zu tun, als ob sie ein Internet verstehen würden, das sie selbst kaum genutzt hätten. Und er war verärgert über die Entscheidung von Präsident Bill Clinton am selben Tag, den Communications Decency Act zu unterzeichnen und die FCC zu ermächtigen, die Übertragung von „obszönem“ Material im Internet zu verbieten, genau wie im Radio und im Netzwerkfernsehen. So verließ er nach einer „ordentlichen Portion Champagner“ die Tanzfläche und schlug die Aussage auf seinem Laptop in einem der Nebenräume des Hotels aus.

Barlow war zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis und hat es per E-Mail an etwa 600 Freunde verschickt. Bald, sagt er, sei die Erklärung auf Zehntausende von Websites kopiert worden, und Barlow habe „Megabyte an E-Mails aus aller Welt erhalten“. Die Erklärung der Unabhängigkeit des Cyberspace wurde Teil einer erfolgreichen EFF-Kampagne, die dazu beitrug, Teile des Communications Decency Act aus Gründen des First Amendment zu stürzen.
