• Anwendungen werden zusammen mit allen Abhängigkeiten in einen Container verpackt – lauffähig.
• Beliebige Betriebssysteme, beliebige Programmbibliotheken in beliebigen Versionen laufen lassen – gleichzeitig und nebeneinander.
• „Ich brauch aber Ruby 1.8 und meine Anwendung läuft nur auf Debian Steinzeit!“ – ja dann ists halt so, kein Problem.
• Beliebig Scheiss in den Container installieren, sudo rm -rf / –no-preserve-root – nach dem Verlassen wird der Container wieder auf den Ursprungszustand zurückgesetzt.

Python 3.4? Python 3.5? Wo ist das Problem?

Couchdb? HA! Was haben wir uns früher Beine ausgerissen, bis Erlang endlich in der benötigten Version auf meinem Debian Testing lief. Heute? docker run couchdb, tschüss bumm figgdi.

Gitlab? Das generiert drei SSH-Keys, installiert Nginx und ein Postgres und dann kocht der Chef während fünf Minuten eine heisse Suppe, die das ganze System auf den Kopf stellt und allerhand Rubycrap installiert. Früher ohne dediziertes System undenkbar! Heute: docker run gitlab/gitlab-ce.

Ruby wird erträglich. Alles wird erträglich! Docker ist ideal für Museumssoftware, die auf den neusten Linux-Distros laufen soll.

Die Software selber kommt bis hierhin und nicht weiter – nämlich innerhalb des Containers. Der Rest meines Systems bleibt unberührt. Aah, was für ein Frieden!

hub.docker.com ist dabei der Appstore für Dockercontainer. „Uncool, ich will aber mein eigenes Repo!“ Kannst du machen. Google „host your own docker registry“.

Wie erstellt man eigene Docker-Container? Mit Dockerfiles. Das kleinste dabei ist „FROM scratch“, ideal für kompilierte eigenständige Go-Programme.

Ports weiterleiten?

Mit -p 8000:80 ist mein Webserver im Container auf meiner Kiste unter localhost:8000 ansprechbar.

Wenn dein Exploit auf meinem Webserver Root-Rechte erlangt, ist er root – aber nur im Dockercontainer.

Persistente Daten?

Mit -v /pfad/aufm/host:/data wird /pfad/aufm/host unter /data im Container eingehängt. Optional mit :ro schreibgeschützt, falls es nur Konfigurationsdateien sind.
