Die Eröffnung
Wir versammeln uns um den grossen Bildschirm und verfolgen die Eröffnung der Konferenz. Eine Frau vom CERT begrüsst uns und fängt an, so richtig schlechte Stimmung zu verbreiten. Sie erzählt, wie schlimm alles ist und was dieses Jahr Schreckliches passiert ist. Vulkanausbrüche, Corona, die Fallzahlen und „es sieht echt nicht gut aus“; es gipfelt mit einer Einspielung von einer Krankenschwester, die erzählt, wie ihr Spital an die Grenzen kommt, dann wird noch gegen die Querdenker geschossen. Und wie, das Arecibo-„Observatorium“ ist zusammengekracht sei schlimm – wenn eine 200 Megawatt Ionosphärenheizung vom Planeten gefegt wird, dann sind das gute Nachrichten! (Kleiner Exkurs: „Arecibo’s Ionospheric Heater is Boiling the Tropical Sky“ (Quelle); und hier noch auf Wikipedia für die Ungläubigen: „Arecibo Observatory also had a HF facility for ionospheric modification.“ Tja. Aber dafür hätte man halt recherchieren müssen, statt fröhlich mit dem Mainstream mitzuschwurbeln.
Ich hab das alles nur entfernt akustisch mitbekommen, ich ging dann zu den Hühnern. Meine gute Laune lasse ich mir nicht von so einer Corona-Panikerin und Mainstream-Meinung-unkritisch-Übernehmerin verderben.
Soll sie doch zischen und wirbeln. Wir haben unser eigenes Studio gebaut und es ist geil! Uns geht es gut, die Welt ist schön und wir machen das Beste aus der Situation.
Bitwäscherei Studios
Situationsbedingt findet der diesjährige Kongress nicht vor Ort statt, sondern Hackerspaces richten selber Studios vor Ort ein für Vorträge, die Teilnehmer treffen sich per Videokonferenz.
Wir strömen auf einer kleinen Workstation, die 1050 Grafikkarte liefert einen 50 fps Stream, die H.264 HDMI-Encoder greifen das Kamerasignal von zwei 400-fränkigen Consumerkameras ab. Der überarbeitete Rauschunterdrücker von OBS reduziert die Störgeräusche vom Richtmikrofon, zusätzlich liefert das Rode Wireless Go Ansteckmikrofon glasklare Sprachqualität vom Redner. Der Ring oben kommt wie gerufen für meine kleinen Videoscheinwerfer, die Dreipunktbeleuchtung gibt dem Studio und den Gesichtern auf dem Videobild den finalen Glanz.
Das sieht dann z.B. so aus:
Andere Studios schleppen Tonnen an Scheinwerfern, riesige Mischpulte, 4K-Kameras auf riesigen Stativen, mehrfache Kontrollpulte und Funkheadsets an. Und am Ende kommt ein Stream raus, der intervallmässig zwischen 15 und 25 fps ruckelt; Interlacing-Linien zeigt; Leute einseitig oder zu Dunkel anstrahlt; das Audio knacken, brummen und rauschen lässt oder den Ton verschoben und nicht Lippensynchron abspielt; den ganzen Bildschirm konstant mit einer grauen Pixelflut überfüllt (A Conversation with Bruce Schneier…). Ist es wirklich so schwer? Wir benutzen Consumer-Grade Hardware und liefern einen besseren Stream als die Studios mit ihren Highend-Kameras und Profimistpulten. Warum lernt ihr nichts? Ich hab doch darüber geschrieben! Da: Vortragsaufzeichnung und Videostreaming im Eigenbau und da: Vortragsaufzeichnung mit 50fps. Es ärgert mich, wenn ich mein Wissen teile, es aber einfach ignoriert wird und ich mir dann immer noch diese Interlacing-Kacke ansehen und den Rauschbrumm-Mief anhören muss. Profi-Equipment am Arsch.
Vier Tage frei experimentieren und verbessern
Das schöne an diesem Congress war: Vier Tage lang eine Bühne, vier Tage lang schleifen und feilen, ausprobieren und optimieren. „Wir machen eine Live-Tour durch den Space. Kannst du das Handy in OBS einbinden?“ Es gäbe da was, eine App, aber die macht Wasserzeichen. Ich sehe im c3voc-Wiki nach und da wird CamON Live Streaming erwähnt. Sehr schön. Und mit einer Auflösung von 720p, 2000er Bitrate und 256kb Audiostream kommt das Ganze unterbrechungsfrei in akzeptabler Qualität im OBS an – ohne Wasserzeichen. Geil! Jetzt haben wir eine Actioncam und können Dinge zeigen bei einem Workshop – ganz ohne GoPro.
Die ideale Lautstärke an der Kamera fürs Richtmikrofon liegt bei -3dB, beim Ansteckmikrofon bei -15dB.
Doch vieles hat auch nicht funktioniert. Zum Beispiel die Sidechain-Compression mit den beiden Mikrofonen – also wenn der Redner am Ansteckmikro redet, soll das die Lautstärke beim Raummikro automatisch verringern. Leider tröpfelt der Restton vom Moderator auch ins Ansteckmikro und so hört man ihn wenig bis nicht in dieser Konstellation.
Die Rauschunterdrückung sollte man abschalten, wenn Musikinstrumente spielen. Der gleichförmige Pfeifton der Flöte wurde als „Störgeräusch“ erkannt und unterdrückt.
Szenen mit Browser-Source und vielen Titeln zwingen OBS doch merklich in die Knie. Ein 1920×1080-Abgriff der tollen Bahnhofsuhr lässt die Framerate von 50 auf 35 sinken, wenn im Vorschaufenster nebendran auch noch mal eine Browsersource für BigBlueButton läuft.
„Die SBB hat die Rechte am Design der Bahnhofsuhr.“ – Ja. Und? „Das könnte vielleicht Probleme geben.“ Wat? Läck, früher hat man im CCC noch gegen die Musikindustrie gewettert und Banner geschaltet, „Boykottiert die Musikindustrie!“ Früher war alles noch Pirat und Rauschgift. Heute guckt man sich diese Bahnhofsuhr an und fragt sich, ob das allenfalls gegen Copyrights verstösst.
„Duu, lass mal lieber den Audiostream von Audioasyl.net weg. Ja, er ist frei. Ja, er ist mit der Suisa abgesprochen. Aber wir hatten mal Probleme mit der GEMA…“

Richtig. Die Actioncam im Hühnerstall, die Hühner in Schwarz, darüber ein fettes „FUCK GEMA“ in Schriftgrösse 256. Bildfüllend. Und dazu Copyright-befreiter Metal. Das ist unser neuer Pausenstream. Buhyeah!
Apropos Hühner. Das sind Nana und Lulu. Sie sind für ein paar Wochen in der Bitwäscherei in den Ferien.
Der Kongress als 2D-Welt
Der Kongress wurde als begehbare Online-Welt in 2D nachgebaut und wenn man sich in die Nähe kommt, öffnet sich eine Videokonferenz. Ich war leider viel zu beschäftigt mit Videostreaming und war nur ganz kurz in dieser 2D-Welt, obwohl das eigentlich die Hauptattraktion für viele Besucher war.
Kongressatmosphäre
Dort blinkt es, da spielt ein Synthesizer, in der Werkstatt pfeift ein Flötenworkshop, hier baut jemand elastische PCBs, dort laufen Vorträge und Workshops und auf dem Sofa diskutiert eine Gruppe angeregt über selbstgebaute Konsolen. Oben in der Lounge fängt ein Schlagzeug an zu spielen. „Woah, eine Liveband?“ frage ich verwundert und bemerke darauf noch die zwei Gitarristen und den DJ. Es ist Kongressstimmung, aber im Kleinstformat. Mir wars letztes Mal in Leipzig sowieso zuviel.
Ich zeichne grad eine Diskussionsrunde auf, wo Künstler aus aller Welt erzählen, wie sie die Corona-Zeiten erlebt und mit was für Problemen sie zu kämpfen haben. Plötzlich taucht jemand als Gans verkleidet auf und schmeisst ein Huhn auf die Bühne.
Fnords und Spässe, wie man sie von den Kongressen kennt. Hammer! Das Panel schliesst mit „Don’t be depressed. Life has to continue.“ Jetzt ist genau die richtige Stimmung für das folgende Video. Ich spiele es gleich im Anschluss ab, als Fnord.
„If you really wanna know who’s in charge – just think about who you can and can’t criticize.“ – bämm, das ist das Abschlusszitat im Video. Ich überblende gleich in den Hühnerstall. Death Metal brättert zum bildfüllenden FUCK GEMA Schriftzug. So muss das sein! Rumpeln, rasseln und rebellieren. Danach blende ich das Pausenbild ohne Uhr ein und begebe mich auf die Bühne zu den Panelisten. Ich will auch das Huhni streicheln! Sie begrüssen mich. Maya schenkt mir ein Glas ein. Ich streichle das Huhn, wenig später ruht es in meinen Armen. Der glucksige Hühnerkopf strahlt im Scheinwerferlicht. Wir stossen an, auf das Bitwäscherei Studio. Ich werde mit Lob zugeschüttet. Es sind alle so dankbar – und gleichzeitig bin ich dankbar, dass das Material endlich genutzt wird! Megatoll. Was für ein wundervoller Wertschätzungsmoment. Wir unterhalten uns weiter, über Corona. Bestimmt sind schon alle am Durchdrehen im Internet, das wir hier zu sechst auf der Bühne tschillen, ohne Abstand und ohne Masken. Haha! Prost!
Als Pausenbild filmen wir die Winkekatze mit invertierten Farben. Welcher DJ grad läuft steht auf einem handgeschriebenen Zetteli. Das hat einen gewissen analogen, handgemachten Charme. Um 1:30 schaue ich in den Stream rein und bemerke, wie sie das Pausenbild dekorieren.
Es ist so toll, immer wieder in den Stream zu schauen und zu sehen, was sich verändert hat. Und so soll es sein – ein offenes Studio, wo jeder selber mitgestalten kann. Ein Videomisch-PC, wo jeder selber ausprobieren, spielen, anpassen und lernen kann.
