Erreger wie das neuartige Coronavirus können nicht nur vom Menschen selbst – etwa via Atmen, Sprechen, Niesen und Husten – an die Umwelt abgegeben werden, sondern offenbar auch mithilfe von WC-Spülungen. Das berichten chinesische Forscher im Fachjournal «Physics of Fluids».
Das Team der Universtität von Yangzhou hatte mithilfe einer Computersimulation nachgewiesen, dass sich kleine Schwebeteilchen – sogenannte Aerosole – beim Spülen der Toilette in der Luft verteilen. In der Studie schwebten 60 Prozent der Partikel durch den Raum.
Wie die Forscher berichten, steigen die vom WC ausgehenden Aerosol-Wolken bis auf eine Höhe von knapp einem Meter an und überdauern eine Weile in der Luft, so dass sie vom nachfolgenden WC-Nutzer eingeatmet werden können.
Der in der Simulation beobachtete Effekt könnte sich laut den Forschern verstärken, je häufiger eine Toilette benutzt wird, «etwa bei einer Familientoilette oder einer öffentlichen Toilette in einem dichtbesiedelten Raum», zitiert Aerzteblatt.de den Ko-Autor Ji-Xiang Wang.
Der chinesische Physiker nennt auch gleich eine ganz einfache Gegenmassnahme: den WC-Deckel vor dem Abziehen schliessen, sofern ein solcher vorhanden ist. Das sei auf öffentlichen WCs nicht immer der Fall.
Um Himmelswillen, da wurde bestimmt ganz schön viel Zeit in diese Aerosol-WC-Wolke Studie investiert!
