Synthesizer: Wir bauen am Computer unsere eigenen Instrumente und machen damit Musik. In Synthesizersprech werden diese Instrumente „Patches“ genannt. Musik komplett künstlich erzeugt. Wie macht man das? Was steckt dahinter? Ein kleines Experiment.

Am Puls der Musik: Der Kick
Der Kick ist das elementare Grundelement. Er pulsiert auf den Schlägen im 4/4 Takt und gibt den Rhythmus an.
Wie sieht dieses Geräusch aus? Es ist eine Sinuskurve, die im unteren Frequenzbereich von hoher zu niedriger Frequenz wandert. Sinus, weil das die benötigte hohe Energie liefert; undekoriert, einfach, kräftig.
Und wie generiere ich einen Kick?
Die erste Möglichkeit: Mit Bordmitteln vom mitgelieferten Synthesizer diese Kurve selbermachen. Gar nicht so einfach. Bis es den „Zapp“, das gewisse Etwas hat, dauert es ewig.
Variante zwei: Eine Sample-Library mit vorgefertigten Kicks benutzen. Meistens sind die coolen Dinger, die man eigentlich bräuchte, in der falschen Tonlage.
Variante drei: Bazzism.
Ich stelle alle Parameter ein und kann das Ergebnis gleich anhören, bis es mir gefällt.
Eine Frequenztabelle hilft mir dabei, die richtige Tonlage zu treffen. Ein knackiger Sweep mit einem Hochenergiepulsierton -- unser Kick ist fertig!
Die Pulsgefässe erweitern: Der Bass
Der Bass füllt die Lücken des Kicks auf, und so ergibt sich das Psytrance-typische Grundtonmuster.
Eine Sägezahnkurve wird mit einem Tiefpassfilter und folgender Hüllkurve moduliert: Steiler Anstieg, kein Halten, zügiger Abfall, wenig Loslassen (Attack, Sustain, Decay, Release).
Zusammen mit dem Kick tönt es dann so:
Einschub: Serum Synth
Serum ist ein Wavetable-Synthesizer. Ich kann die Kurven selber zeichnen, zwischen diesen Kurven hin- und herfahren, mit einer Kurve eine andere modulieren, jeden Regler und Wert automatisieren und steuern und am Schluss Effekte wie das Ping-Pong Delay darüberstülpen. Der absolute BÖRNER.

Ein erster Entwurf
Auf Coursera gibt es den Kurs „Creating Synthesizer Sounds for Electronic Music„. Wir lernen dort nach und nach die verschiedenen Elemente elektronischer Musik kennen: Pads, Leads, Organs, Keys, Effekte und Texturen. Unser Projekt soll eine elektronische Etüde sein, mit der wir arbeiten und so alles kennenlernen.
Dies ist der Umriss eines Songs:
Im Intro werden die Hörer sanft abgeholt und in die neue Welt eingeführt. Dann beginnt der Groove, wo das Lied und die Melodie sich vorstellt. Der Breakdown ist ein ruhiger Zwischenteil, das Aufatmen vor dem Höhepunkt. Im Climax spielen alle Instrumente mit maximaler Feuerkraft. Danach baut sich das Lied im Outro wieder ab.
Bis der Entwurf soweit war, wie er ist, hat es viele viele Experimente und Iterationen gebraucht. Regler drehen und Presets klicken ist eine Sache -- aber das alles zu einem komplettes Lied arrangieren ist noch mal etwas ganz anderes. Ich bin überrascht, wie schwierig das ist. Dieses Pad tönt für sich alleine gut, aber wenn man es auf diese Bassspur legt, funken sich die Harmonien dazwischen, es funktioniert nicht. Wie gestalte ich die Übergänge? Ein Rauschen mit dem Tiefpassfilter langsam hochkochen fürs Intro? Zufrieden bin ich nicht. Und dann, wie hält man die Energie, wie hält man die Hörer bei Laune? Wenn ich andere Lieder sehe, wie lange die dauern und wie abwechslungsreich die gestaltet sind, bin ich eingeschüchtert. Die Details sind perfekt ausgearbeitet, die Harmonien und Akkordfolgen „passen einfach“. Aber bis es soweit ist, ist man auch mal gut und gerne über die Zeit von drei Jahren an einem Lied dran -- versichert uns Liquid Soul in einem Interview.
Hinter der vermeintlichen „Bumm-Bumm-Musik“, wie sie von Uneingeweihten immer abgestempelt wird, steckt jahrelange Arbeit, Liebe zum Detail und eine Menge Musiktheorie und Wissen. Es ist wie mit allem kreativen Schaffen; sei es malen, programmieren, oder Filme schneiden -- das alles braucht Zeit und immer wieder kleine Verbesserungen und Feinschliffe, bis ein Endprodukt unten rausfällt.
Jetzt, wo ich langsam verstehe, wie diese Musik zustande kommt, höre ich sie anders. Ah, das ist der Cutoff-Filter und das klingt nach einer Rechteckskurve. Dieser Rhythmus gefällt mir. Ist es wirklich so einfach? Eine Sägezahnkurve, die in der Tonhöhe, im Rhythmus und mit einem Tiefpassfilter variiert wird, mit Filtern und anderen Oszillatoren dekoriert und verfremdet?
Und wenn ich drei Stunden lang drangesessen bin, verkommt der Rest der Welt zu Synthesizern. Das Wasser, das aus dem Oszillator (Hahnen) fliesst, wird durch den Sprühkopf moduliert und fliesst mit einer Decay-Time von zwei Sekunden im Spülbecken ab. Ich kann den Hahnen greifen und hin- und herbewegen, dann bin ich ein LFO -- ein Low Frequency Oscillator. Joscha Bach hat recht: Das Universum ist ein grosser Synthesizer. Alles ist Rhythmus, alles ist Schwingung, alles ist Klang. Muster moduliert auf Mustern.
