I’m an expert on how technology hijacks our psychological vulnerabilities. That’s why I spent the last three years as a Design Ethicist at Google caring about how to design things in a way that defends a billion people’s minds from getting hijacked.

When using technology, we often focus optimistically on all the things it does for us. But I want to show you where it might do the opposite.

Where does technology exploit our minds’ weaknesses?

I learned to think this way when I was a magician. Magicians start by looking for blind spots, edges, vulnerabilities and limits of people’s perception, so they can influence what people do without them even realizing it. Once you know how to push people’s buttons, you can play them like a piano.

And this is exactly what product designers do to your mind. They play your psychological vulnerabilities (consciously and unconsciously) against you in the race to grab your attention.

I want to show you how they do it.

Hijack #1: If You Control the Menu, You Control the Choices

Western Culture is built around ideals of individual choice and freedom. Millions of us fiercely defend our right to make “free” choices, while we ignore how those choices are manipulated upstream by menus we didn’t choose in the first place.

This is exactly what magicians do. They give people the illusion of free choice while architecting the menu so that they win, no matter what you choose. I can’t emphasize enough how deep this insight is.

When people are given a menu of choices, they rarely ask:

• „what’s not on the menu?“
• „why am I being given these options and not others?“
• „do I know the menu provider’s goals?“
• „is this menu empowering for my original need, or are the choices actually a distraction?“ (e.g. an overwhelmingly array of toothpastes)

Vor einem Jahr: Die Welt im Jahre 2015

„Weisst du noch, damals, im 2016…“ beginne ich am Lagerfeuer unserer Kommune zu erzählen. „Die hatten damals alles unterjocht. Überwachung, wo man nur hinsah; und die haben die Leute sogar so weit gebracht, dass sie glaubten, dies sei zu ihrer Sicherheit notwendig! Dass sie sich selber überwachen lassen und ja ’nichts zu verbergen‘ haben. Kann man sich gar nicht ausdenken heute!“

„Ja genau!“ erwiedert mein Kumpel. „Die Leute damals hatten gar kein Bewusstsein für Datenhoheit. Wenn du denen mit einem dezentralen Konzept gekommen bist, haben sie’s gar nicht erst verstanden, oder sogar den Trugschluss gehegt, ‚Zentralisierung‘ sei doch einfacher.“ „So ein Bullshit!“ 😀 lachen wir. „Das waren wirklich ziemliche Dubelis, und sie wurden so dumm gehalten. Manchmal hab ich echt geglaubt, wir schaffen es nicht mehr, sie aus diesem Sumpf zu befreien. Die haben ihren Sklavenstatus sogar verteidigt.“ „Gut aber, sie sahen auch keine Alternativen. Man hat ihnen ständig eingetrichtert, so wie es momentan ist, sei es halt so und das ändert sich auch nicht. Der Zustand sei ‚Alternativlos‘.“ „Furchtbar. Frage mich, wie die das hingekriegt haben, restlos alle so unten und klein zu halten.“ „Technologie macht’s möglich. Das ist ein zweischneidiges Schwert, du kannst Technologie zum Guten wie auch zum Schlechten verwenden. Ist doch mit allem so. Wussten auch die, die damals an der Macht waren. Deshalb haben sie sich auch so davor gefürchtet, dass irgendeinisch die Beherrschten Technologie gegen ihre Herrscher wenden könnten. Darum hat man ständig, dauerhaft, tagtäglich permanent überwacht, gemüllt, geängstigt, geterroranschlägt, desinformiert, komplett durchs Band und an allen Stellen. Da war ja diese Bewegung der Feministen, erinnerst du dich?“ „Stimmt! Die haben sämtliche Schulen und Unis unterwandert und unter dem Deckmantel der Gleichstellung eine radikal gefährliche, menschenfeindliche Zensurbewegung geschaffen. Texte wurden verwässert und sinnentleert, ganze Wörter wie „Neger“ und „Mann“ aus Kindergeschichtsbüchern gestrichen. Es ging nur noch um die Form, nicht mehr um den eigentlichen Inhalt. In den Schulen wurde nicht wirklich Wissen gelehrt, sondern strunzdummer Bullshit. Extra-komplexe Sachen, die so kompliziert aussahen, dass sie selbst die intelligenten Geister glauben liessen, es stecke was Schlaues dahinter. Stichwort: Java, weisst du noch? Und weil alle in den gleichen Topf reinspritzten, hat sich niemand überlegt, ob es denn wirklich so war und nicht auch anders sein könnte.“ „Ganz allgemein waren Schulen Erziehungshäuser, die die Leute auf die Industriearbeit vorbereiten und formen sollten. Das hat man gleichzeitig auch genutzt, um sie zu formen und deren Denken in eine gewünschte Richtung zu lenken. Konsens zu schaffen.“

„Und das hat funktioniert? Die haben das denen voll abgekauft?“ „Die konnten die Menschen damals sogar jährlich berauben und von dem gestohlenen Geld wiederum Leute anstellen, die andere Menschen verfolgen.“ „Waaas??!“ „Ja. Und die haben es sogar so hingekommen, dass die Leute geglaubt haben, dieses System sei für das gemeinsame Zusammenleben notwendig, und anders könnte es ja gar nicht funktionieren. Wenn man die Leute nicht jährlich bestehlen würde, wer würde dann den Abfall entsorgen oder die Strassen bauen?“ „Echt jetzt? Auf solche kleinen Tricks sind die reingefallen?“ „Jaja. Aber die grossen Firmen hat man nicht beraubt, die, die wirklich vieles hätten finanzieren können. Immer nur auf die Kleinen und Schwachen. Das war ein sehr mafiöses System.“

„Tja, und dann hatten die Herrscher natürlich alle Medienhäuser im Griff und konnten alles unterdrücken, was ihnen gegen den Strich ging. Eigentlich ist es ein einfaches Prinzip, aber es wurde ein Riesenaufwand betrieben, und das an so vielen Stellen, nur um diese Scheinwelt der Unterdrückung am Leben zu erhalten. Weil eben alles überall manipuliert ist, fiel es niemandem auf. Da war kein ‚Glitch‘ in der Matrix.“ „Das fand ich das besonders Schlimme daran, dass sie so unsichtbar ist. Dass die Menschen überhaupt nicht merkten, dass das alles künstlich ist und dass sie derb gefangen sind. Sie wurden nur amigs depressiv und wussten nicht, warum.“ „Ja kein Wunder, bei diesen menschenunwürdigen Umständen.“ „Mhm.“

„Wie war das eigentlich mit dem Handel?“, springt ein Kind in die Diskussion ein. „Der war übelst reguliert. Du konntest fast nichts Handeln, wenn es denen nicht passte. Reglemente über Waren, Zölle, Normen. Der Handel fand mit dem Zahlungsmittel der Herrschenden statt und die wollten alles wissen, wer mit wem wieviel und was handelte. Jede Transaktion. Da gab es diese Einkaufszentren, so grosse Ballungszentren des Konsums, wo die Leute dann ihre Waren abholen konnten und mit so einem Plastikkärtchen gezahlt haben. Jeder Einkauf wurde genau aufgezeichnet. Und die haben die Menschen, die das produziert haben, nicht mal gekannt.“ „WAAS?“ „Nein. Dieses Einkaufszentrum sprang als Mittler dazwischen und hat die menschliche Transaktion abgelöst. Das direkte Geben und Empfangen, der echte und natürliche Handel unter Menschen, wo man den Produzenten persönlich kennt, das hat eigentlich sehr selten stattgefunden. Damals haben Konzerne die Waren produziert, Leute waren da angestellt, doch ein Gesicht hatten diese Konzerne keines. Und wenn mal was schiefging, haben sie sich alle gedrückt und es wollte niemand dafür verantwortlich sein. Die haben auch so viel weggeworfen. Alles musste immer frisch sein. Und die Produktqualität war absichtlich schlecht, so dass das Zeug kaputtging und man wieder neues kaufen musste. So wurden alle künstlich immer im Mangel gehalten.“

„Gab es Bibliotheken?“ „Klar. Aber für Untertanen bloss die Staatsbibliotheken mit zugelassenen Büchern. Selten echtes Wissen. Der Vatikanstaat hatte damals alle Bücher und das Wissen für sich gehortet, hermetisch abgeriegelt und bewacht. Zu diesem Archiv hatte niemand Zugang.“

„Gut, hin und wieder liess man die Leute zusammenkommen. Meist aber in organisierten Grossveranstaltungen, und meistens ging es darum, dass Menschen gegeneinander antreten und aufeinander losgehen. Oder es wurde ‚etwas geboten‘, eine Darbietung, Show. Nach der Präsentation gingen alle wieder nach Hause. Festivals, wo man im kleinen Rahmen und für eine Woche so zusammenleben konnte wie jetzt waren rar, aber die gab es zum Glück auch.“

Vor einem Jahr: Die Welt in 16 Jahren

Wir sitzen am Feuer, es dunkelt ein. Unsere Kommune ist selbstorganisiert, selbstversorgend und selbstverwaltet. Gemütliche Strohballenhäuser halten die Temperaturen im Winter warm und im Sommer kühl. Komposttoiletten und biologische Wasseraufbereitungsanlagen verwandeln Abfallstoffe zurück in Nährstoffe. Auf der ganzen Welt haben sich Menschen zu Kommunen zusammengeschlossen und leben in ihren natürlichen Kulturkreisen, jede mit ihren Eigenarten und Spezialitäten. Überregional schliesst man sich zu einer Föderation zusammen, die immer aus wechselnden Mitgliedern der Kommunen besteht. Manchmal gehen Kinder zur Föderation und vertreten ihre Interessen. Sie haben eine Stimme und werden als vollwertiges Mitglied der Gesellschaft gezählt und respektiert, denn sie können uns vieles zeigen. Jeder Mensch findet irgendwo seine Aufgabe, ist aber nicht gezwungen, nach einer zu suchen, oder seine Tätigkeit mit anderen zu vergleichen und messen. Da gibt es Milchhändler, Imker, Netzwerkspezialisten, Händler, Schreiner, Geschichtenerzähler, Musiker, Tierfreunde und Gärtner – oder gleich Menschen mit allem zusammen. So genaue Grenzen wie „einen Beruf“ gibt es nicht. Wir sind nicht am arbeiten, sondern am spielen. Talente werden spontan entdeckt und weiterverfolgt, in dem man einander über die Schulter schaut. Die Geheimnistuerei um den Inhalt des TTIP-Vertrages (Transatlantische Handels- und Investitionspartnerschaft) hat absurde Formen angenommen. Nicht nur die Verhandlungen wurden unter Ausschluss der Öffentlichkeit abgehalten, auch danach darf das gemeine Volk den Text nicht einsehen.

Politiker dürfen nur alleine den Text in einem abgeschotteten „Lesezimmer“ lesen, aber niemanden dabei haben und keine Kopien oder Abschriften anfertigen. Handy und andere elektronischen Geräte müssen abgegeben werden. Sie dürfen den Vertrag nur in einem speziellen Raum „lesen und den Inhalt für sich behalten“.

Um die Absurdität der Geheimhaltung in Brüssel aufzuzeigen, hat ein Mitglied des Europaparlaments, Luke Ming Flanagan (Unabhängiger aus Irland) entschieden, sich beim Versuch des Lesens filmen zu lassen. Ein Mitarbeiter begleitet ihn zum Leseraum und es wurde dabei festgehalten, welche Hindernisse von den Eurokraten in den Weg gelegt werden, damit er den TTIP-Vertrag zu Gesicht bekommt. Er brachte zum Ausdruck, wie restriktiv und lächerlich das Prozedere abläuft.

Ihm wurde sogar von den Apparatschiks der EU gesagt, er soll froh sein, dass die Mitglieder der EU-Parlaments überhaupt Einsicht bekommen.

Als bekannt wurde, dass Flanagan ein Video über seinen Leseversuch gedreht und veröffentlicht hat, wurde er von der EU-Führung aufgefordert, das Video zu löschen. Er hat sich aber geweigert und deshalb können wir uns die Szenen wie folgt anschauen. Zu sehen bekam er sowieso nur eine Zusammenfassung und nicht den ganzen Vertragstext.

Sein Kommentar: „Das ist ihre Vorstellung von demokratischer Aufsicht (durch das EU-Parlament)“. Er musste sogar eine Bestätigung unterschreiben, nichts über den genauen Inhalt seinen Wählern mitzuteilen, sondern darf nur wage Angaben machen.

„Freihandelsvertrag“. Echter freier Handel braucht keinen Vertrag. Echte freie Marktwirtschaft wird heute „Schwarzmarkt“ genannt, um dem einen negativen Beigeschmack zu geben; zu suggerieren, das sei etwas verruchtes und verbotenes und deshalb Schwarz und illegal.

Freier Handel würde bedeuten:

• Alle Handelstarife und Zölle sind abgeschafft.
• Wer immer Handel treiben will, ist ohne jede Einschränkung dazu berechtigt, das über jedwede Grenzen hinweg in jedem beliebigen Umfang mit jeglichen beliebigen Waren zu tun.

Wozu also ein Tausende Seiten umfassendes Vertragswerk, das nicht den Interessen der Bürger, sondern ausschließlich denen der Herrschenden und deren Symbionten in der Großindustrie nützt? (Quelle: misesde.org)

Früher hatten sie Korrespondenten, und die haben dann aus dem jeweiligen Land den DPA-Feed vorgelesen. Auch nicht viel besser.

Eine neue Studie des Wissenschaftlers Jon Penney von der Universität von Oxford beweist, was Datenschützer und Bürgerrechts-Aktivisten schon lange betonen: massive Überwachung sorgt für Angst, Selbstzensur und konformistisches Verhalten. Sie schädigt die Meinungsfreiheit und den offenen, demokratischen Austausch von Wissen und Ideen. Nachdem es für dieses Phänomen nun derart aufwändig erhobene Beweise gibt, wird es Zeit, dass es endlich ernst genommen und vor allem entsprechend gehandelt wird. Überwachung muss eingeschränkt werden, um die Demokratie zu schützen.

Neue Studie: Wikipedia-Nutzer haben Angst vor Überwachung

Kürzlich wurde eine Studie des Forschers Jon Penney von der Universität Oxford veröffentlicht, die sich mit den Auswirkungen von Internet-Überwachung auf das Verhalten von Nutzern des Online-Lexikons  beschäftigt.

In der Studie konnten Penney und sein Team beweisen, dass Überwachung tatsächlich massive Auswirkungen darauf hat, wie sich die Wikipedia-Nutzer verhalten. Nach dem bekannt werden der massiven NSA-Überwachung großer Teile des Internet (unter anderem durch das PRISM-Programm, das zu den ersten Snowden-Enthüllungen gehörte), wurden kontroverse Artikel weitaus seltener abgerufen.

Im November 2016 wird die Schweizer Post die Bezahl-App TWINT für Smartphones einführen, mit der an vielen Kassen bargeldlos bezahlt werden soll. Auch Überweisungen zwischen Privatpersonen können getätigt werden. In ihrem Magazin rühmt die Post diese neue Technologie als „völlig neues Einkaufserlebnis“, welches das lästige Hantieren mit Münzen und Papiergeld überflüssig macht. Zahlreiche Länder haben solche Bezahlsysteme bereits eingeführt und verzeichnen groβe  Zuwachsraten. Auch in der Schweiz stehe das Bezahlen mit dem Handy vor dem Durchbruch. Die SBB möchte sich ebenfalls daran beteiligen. Auch in allen Geschäften des Detailhandelsunternehmens Coop soll nächstens damit bezahlt werden können.

Die zahlreichen Nachteile dieser Technologie werden im euphorischen Artikel des PostMagazins dabei auβer Acht gelassen: Diese Technologie lockt durch die angebliche Einfachheit die Kunden vom Bargeld weg und ermöglicht es den Unternehmen somit alles zu dokumentieren und aufzuzeichnen, was, wo und wann jemand einkauft. Die Einführung von TWINT muss deshalb als weiterer Schritt in Richtung Bargeldverbot, Smartphone-Zwang und Totalüberwachung eingestuft werden.
