Was müssen wir tun, um in Zeiten globaler Überwachung das Netz widerstandsfähiger und sicherer zu machen? In einem Interview in der aktuellen Ausgabe von Technology Review beklagt Jacob Appelbaum, dass Firmen und die US-Regierung zu großen Einfluss auf vitale Teile des Internets hätten. „Das müssen wir ändern. Dafür brauchen wir nicht das alte System vollständig aufzugeben, aber wir müssen es erweitern.“ Vor allem müsse es mithilfe von Peer-to-Peer-Netzwerken dezentralisiert werden und durch alternative Namensverzeichnisse wie GNS die derzeitige Hoheit von Verisign bei der Namensvergabe von Adressen aufzuteilen.

Appelbaum sieht als großen Schwachpunkt in der globalen Kommunikation das derzeitige E-Mail-System. „Diese Technologie ist nicht gut genug.“ Sie biete Privatsphäre „auf dem Niveau des 19. Jahrhunderts“, so Appelbaum. Es gebe keine Möglichkeit, E-Mail in der derzeitigen Form sicher zu machen. Auch das Verschlüsselungsverfahren PGP sei keine Alternative, „weil es nicht hundertprozentig sicher und zudem ein Albtraum in Sachen Benutzerfreundlichkeit ist.“

Zuversichtlich ist Appelbaum hinsichtlich Verschlüsselung. „Ich glaube nicht, dass es der NSA gelingen wird, unsere besten Verschlüsselungssysteme zu knacken. Die Mathematik ist zu gut.“ Trotzdem müssten noch manche Probleme gelöst werden, zum Beispiel das der Folgenlosigkeit und des Schutzes der Metadaten. Das größte Problem sieht Appelbaum aber nicht in der Verschlüsselungstechnik sondern im Zugang zu ihr: „Sichere Verschlüsselung muss Standard sein – und zwar in jedem Smartphone.“

Es ist der 29. September. Heute in 31 Jahren beginnt die Geschichte über ein düsteres, im Jahr 2044 angesiedeltes Zukunftsszenario, das an einen Überwachungsstaat, etwa wie in George Orwells Roman 1984, erinnert.

Das Spiel ist aktueller den je! Was mich besonders beunruhigt: Als es 2005 erschien, war alles noch „Zukunft“. Heute ist bereits vieles Realität. Der Messenger ist das iPhone, Das Echelon-System ist PRISM, Folterknäste existieren und Fahndungen nach Dissidenten finden statt.

Die in The Moment of Silence entworfene Dystopie eines elektronischen Überwachungsstaates bezieht ihre Überzeugungskraft vor allem aus der schlüssigen Zuspitzung von bekannten, geplanten oder denkbaren Entwicklungen informationeller Kontrolle. Digitalisierungspflicht für Bücher und Aufzeichnungen, Verbot von Verschlüsselungstechniken, Abschaffung der Handschrift und des Bargeldes sowie Verschmelzung von Identifizierungs-, Kommunikations-, Navigations- und Zahlungsfunktionen in einem jederzeit ortbaren und pflichtweise mitzuführenden Gerät („Messenger“) machen die Überwachung lückenlos.

Viele der im Spiel angesprochenen Technologien gibt es so oder in leicht abgewandelter Form auch in der Realität, wie etwa das Spionagenetz Echelon. Durch die Einbeziehung von populären Verschwörungstheorien und Mythen (UFO-Erscheinungen stellen sich als staatliche Überwachungsdrohnen heraus, Forschungsprogramme und Lauscheinrichtungen wie das SETI-Institut sind geheimer Teil des Abhörapparats) verdichtet sich die Fiktion eines allgegenwärtigen Staates. Zahlreiche weitere im Spiel dargestellte technische Entwicklungen, beispielsweise der von der NASA diskutierte Weltraumlift (Space Elevator) oder das SATCAR, ein fahrerloses Transportfahrzeug für den öffentlichen Individualverkehr, sind aus realen Konzeptstudien entlehnt.

Eigentlich sollte jeder seine Alltagskommunikation verschlüsseln. Wir müssen an die Folgen unseres Handelns für die Gesellschaft denken. Nicht jeder Inhalt einer WhatsApp-Nachricht ist hochsensibel. Darum geht es aber auch gar nicht. Indem wir unsere Kommunikation verschlüsseln, tragen wir dazu bei, dass es zu einer sozialen Norm wird. Verschlüsselte Nachrichten werden dann als normal akzeptiert.

Dienstag, 6. August 2013: Mein Hoster meines Tor Exit-Routers hat 62 abuse-complaints erhalten und mir weitergeleitet.

Donnerstag, 8. August 2013: Lavabit, ein E-Mail Anbieter mit Fokus auf Privatsphäre, macht dicht.

Freitag, 9. August 2013: Silent Circle, Anbieter von verschiedenen Diensten für verschlüsselte Kommunikation, stellt seinen E-Mail Dienst ein.

Freitag, 9. August 2013: Das FBI besucht Noisebridge, ein US-Hackerspace, wegen eines Tor Exit-Nodes.
