Der Schultyp, der hier im folgenden beschrieben werden soll, mag utopisch klingen, ist jedoch lebendige Realität: Die älteste dieser Schulen, die Sudbury Valley School in Framingham (Massachusetts, USA), existiert schon seit 1968. Mittlerweile gibt es weltweit, auf vier Kontinenten, mehr als 30 Schulen nach dem Modell der Sudbury Valley School. Immer wieder hat sich in diesen Schulen eindrucksvoll gezeigt, mit welcher Freude, mit welcher Konzentration und welch beachtlichen Ergebnissen Kinder und Jugendliche in Freiheit Lernen. Die Sudbury Valley School ist ein wahres „Erfolgsmodell“, das nun hier als staatliches Bildungsangebot in Serie gehen könnte.

Allgemeines

Diese Schule umfaßt zwischen etwa 20 und 250 Schülern und je nach Schülerzahl drei bis zwölf Mitarbeiter. Die jüngsten Schüler sind etwa vier Jahre alt, die ältesten ungefähr 20. Das „Eintrittsalter“ variiert von Schüler zu Schüler, aber grundsätzlich ist es nie zu spät, Schüler dieser Schule zu werden, und aufhören kann man natürlich auch zu jeder Zeit.

Die Schüler können den ganzen Tag über tun und lassen, was sie wollen, sofern sie dabei niemand anderes stören. Sie können die Schule und das Schulgelände jederzeit und ohne Begründung verlassen. Es gibt keine Pflichtveranstaltungen, höchstens gegenseitige freiwillige Vereinbarungen zwischen Mitarbeitern und Schülern und auch zwischen Schülern untereinander.

Schüler und Mitarbeiter sind völlig gleichberechtigt. Die Schüler duzen die Mitarbeiter und reden sie mit dem Vornamen an, und umgekehrt ist es natürlich genauso. Die Beziehungen zwischen den Schülern und den Mitarbeitern unterscheiden sich kaum von den Beziehungen der Schüler untereinander. Die Atmosphäre in der Schule ist locker und familiär.

Die Schüler werden nicht nach dem Alter getrennt. Klassen gibt es nicht. Freundschaften und Interessengemeinschaften wie Lerngruppen entstehen über Altersunterschiede hinweg.

Leben und Lernen

Unterricht im herkömmlichen Sinne ist die Ausnahme und kommt nur zustande, wenn Schüler dies ausdrücklich wünschen. Lernen ist voll im Leben integriert. Daß die Schule ein Lebensort ist, zeigt sich auch daran, daß sie ähnlich wie eine große Wohnung eingerichtet ist. Klassenräume gibt es nicht.

Einige sitzen still irgendwo in der Gegend und lesen ein Buch, andere unterhalten sich oder diskutieren über irgend etwas und noch andere spielen, machen Sport, surfen im Internet, lesen Zeitung, zeichnen, machen Musik, träumen, usw. Irgendeine Sache klappt nicht so, wie man es sich gedacht hatte, also überlegt man, wie man das Problem lösen kann. Man will irgendwas wissen, also versucht man, es herauszufinden. Manche Sachen probiert man einfach aus, andere läßt man sich von jemandem erklären. Einen Teil lernt man dadurch, daß man Erwachsenen zusieht, wie sie eine Sache tun, oder dadurch, daß man es mit ihnen zusammen tut. Aber das meiste, was man lernt, lernt man von anderen Kindern; und es hat mit dem Leben zu tun – wie man lebt und wie Sachen geschehen. Das meiste kommt vom Herumsitzen und Reden: ein Gedanke kommt auf und entwickelt sich von sich aus weiter. Oft ist einem gar nicht bewußt, daß man lernt. Lernen passiert ganz natürlich, wie atmen auch. Hier wird nicht Zeit abgesessen, sondern hier findet aktives Leben statt.

Daß es in so einer Schule keinen Lehrplan gibt, ist klar. Jeder beschäftigt sich damit, wofür er sich interessiert. Niemand kann einen anderen zum Lernen zwingen. Jeder Schüler entscheidet selbst, welche Themen wichtig sind, und welche nicht. Der Schüler hat die volle Verantwortung für sein Lernen und seine Aktivitäten an der Schule. Niemand hat das Recht, sich in seine Aktivitäten einzumischen – solange der Schüler durch diese nicht das Recht anderer, das gleiche zu tun, verletzt. Es gibt keine Höherbewertung akademischer Themen gegenüber anderen Beschäftigungen. Auch sind die Schüler keiner ständigen Aufsicht durch die Mitarbeiter ausgesetzt.

Die Mitarbeiter drängen sich also nicht auf, sondern stehen zur Verfügung. Da die Schüler hauptsächlich alleine oder von anderen Kindern lernen und Erwachsene nur gelegentlich zu Rate ziehen, werden an Sudbury-Schulen insgesamt nicht so viele Mitarbeiter benötigt wie an traditionellen Schulen. Und während es an den meisten Schulen Lehrer, Hausmeister, Reinigungspersonal und Verwaltungsleute als getrennte Berufe gibt, gibt es an Sudbury-Schulen einfach nur Mitarbeiter. Falls gerade kein Schüler ihre Mitarbeit benötigt, kümmern sich die Mitarbeiter z.B. um Verwaltungsarbeit oder gehen ihren eigenen Interessen nach.

Zensuren oder andere vergleichbare Bewertungen gibt es natürlich nicht. Wer eine Rückmeldung über seine Fähigkeiten haben will, kann einen Mitarbeiter oder andere Schüler um eine Einschätzung bitten. Wer dies unbedingt will, kann sich auch freiwilligen Tests unterziehen, die dann nur dem Schüler zur Information dienen, zu mehr nicht.

Im Laufe der Zeit entwickeln die Schüler spezielle Interessen, denen sie sehr ausgiebig nachgehen, zum Beispiel Musikinstrumente spielen, Computer programmieren, Latein lernen, Philosophie, höhere Mathematik, Quantenphysik, Chemie, usw. Meistens beschäftigen sie sich mit diesen Sachen nicht deshalb, weil sie in ihrem Leben eine Rolle spielen würden, sondern weil sie sich selbst herausfordern wollen. Die Schüler tun überwiegend nicht die Sachen, die ihnen leicht fallen, sondern gerade die, die ihnen schwer fallen. Sie sind sich ihrer Stärken und Schwächen sehr bewußt und arbeiten hart an Letzteren. Und wenn sie etwas nicht auf Anhieb schaffen, versuchen sie es eben noch mal und noch mal, bis sie ihr Ziel erreicht haben. Sie erreichen Höchstleistungen, die nicht durch Drill und Zwang, sondern nur durch Freiwilligkeit erreicht werden können.

Mediendiktatur. So nennt sich die „Demokratie, die von den Medien gesteuert wird“.

Auf jedem Werbeplakat waren in letzter Zeit Dinge zu lesen wie: „Ecopop Nein“ „Abstellgleis“ und „gefährlich“. Wer sich mal hingesetzt hat, und sich generell Gedanken über seine politische Position gemacht hat, den lassen solche Plakate, Angstmachereien und Manipulationen kalt.

Es ist völlig klar, die Schweiz ist zu klein, der Platz ist begrenzt für noch mehr. Das habe ich mir schon vor einem Jahr so aufgeschrieben. Und wenn jetzt die Natur gefährdet ist, weil noch mehr Wohnflächen gebaut werden müssen – tschüss, nein, wir brauchen nicht noch mehr. Die Natur hat Vorrang. Warum wandern Flüchtlinge eigentlich nicht dorthin, wo es genug Platz hat? Nach Australien zum Beispiel? Wir könnten Australien ja fragen, ob sie zur Schweiz beitreten wollen, wenn es euch so wichtig ist, dass Flüchtlinge „Hauptsache in die Schweiz“ einwandern sollen. Das hat etwas mit Platz und der verfügbaren Infrastruktur zu tun, Dummerchen.

In dem Gespräch erklärt Snowden auch politische und philosophische Hintergründe für seine Entscheidung, die NSA-Aktivitäten offenzulegen. So weist er die so oft geäußerte Begründung zurück, bei der Massenüberwachung gehe es um Fragen der „nationalen Sicherheit“. Der Begriff sei irreführend, weil eigentlich „Staatssicherheit“ gemeint sei. Diese Wort werde nur deshalb nicht benutzt, weil es an all die schlimmen Regime erinnere. US-Offiziellen, die dazu im Fernsehen redeten, gehe es nicht darum, was für den Einzelnen oder die Wirtschaft gut ist, sondern immer nur um den Schutz und die Aufrechterhaltung des staatlichen Systems. Snowden versichert, kein Anarchist zu sein; aber man müsse sich bei solchen Begriffen bewusst sein, was gemeint ist und erkennen, wenn sich politische Entwicklungen gegen die Bürger richten.

Eros ist die Liebe Gottes, die in der Welt ständig auf der Suche ist nach einer neuen, harmonischeren Synthese aller Erfahrungen und Wahrnehmungen, aus denen das Universum besteht. Auf der menschlichen Ebene sucht Eros vor allem nach einem besseren gegenseitigen Verstehen und liebevolleren Gemeinschaftsformen. Eros ist die zentrale Triebfeder für das Motivationssystem jedes einzelnen. Es ist der göttliche Funken in unserem Inneren. Ihm kann und sollte vertraut werden. Eros weiß, was wir insgeheim möchten und wessen wir besonders bedürfen. Leider liegt den Kindererziehungspraktiken und pädagogischen Methoden unserer Gesellschaft ein tiefes Misstrauen gegenüber dem Eros der Kinder zugrunde. Wir möchten, dass die Kinder nicht mehr aus ihrem ureigenen Antrieb heraus handeln. Wir möchten, dass sie gerade die Tätigkeiten und Beziehungen, die sie am tiefsten berühren, die ihnen die meiste Erregung verschaffen und die sie am innigsten wünschen, nicht mehr fortsetzen. Wir möchten, dass Kinder alles preisgeben, was aus ihrer Sicht einzigartig ist. Sie sollten unkritisch die Ansichten, Vorlieben, Abneigungen, Vorurteile und Rachegelüste ihrer Gesellschaft teilen.

Diese Angriffe, die darauf zielen, den Eros der Kinder zu unterdrücken und sie ihren ureigenen Antrieben, Gefühlen und Sichtweisen zu entfremden, wurden manchmal als „Das Kind zähmen/brechen“ (Breaking the child) bezeichnet. Die grausamen und gewalttätigen Methoden, die oft angewendet werden, um Pferde zu zähmen, stellen in der Tat einen geeigneten Metapher dar für einige dieser unerhörten Kindererziehungsmethoden. Wenn es nicht durch Schläge und Erniedrigungen erreicht werden kann, das Kind zu brechen, muss es mit List und Tücke versucht werden.

In letzter Zeit wird die zum Funktionieren der Schulen notwendige Unterdrückung mit Medikamenten erreicht. Wir geben Ritalin, weil wir sie nicht mehr schlagen dürfen. Natürlich geschieht dies alles im Namen und zum Wohle des Kindes. Oft wird es „Therapie“ genannt. Aber in Wirklichkeit schädigt die Unterdrückung des Eros die emotionale Gesundheit des einzelnen und der Gesellschaft zutiefst.

Das zentrale Triebreservoir menschlichen Wesens ist nicht – wie Freud es in seinem Konzept als „ES“ skizziert hat – ein antisoziales Monster mit niedrigsten Vergnügungstrieben, das die sozialen Gefüge zerstört, sobald es dies vermag. Dieses Negativbild von dem, was menschliche Wesen in Innersten wollen, muss korrigiert werden, denn es dient als Rechtfertigung für all die lebensfeindlichen pädagogischen Methoden, denen Kinder regelmäßig ausgesetzt werden. Wenn der kräftige Lebenswille in Kindern gelegentlich Freuds ES ähnlich ist, dann deswegen, weil dieser Wille durch Repressionen und Ängste verdreht und unkenntlich gemacht wurde.

Kinder müssen nicht gezähmt/gebrochen werden. Von Geburt an suchen Kinder liebevolle, erfüllte Beziehungen. Kinder sind von Natur aus soziale Wesen. Sie möchten Erwachsenen gefallen, und denjenigen nacheifern, die sie bewundern. Mehr als alles andere möchten sie dazugehören. Kinder sind von Natur aus neugierig. Sie sind voller Fragen – sie möchten alles wissen. Sie müssen nicht gezähmt/gebrochen werden, um sozialisiert oder lernbereit zu werden. Kinder zu brechen führt im Gegenteil zu antisozialen Impulsen und zerstört die natürliche Neugierde, die Treibfeder für das Lernen sein könnte. Eine Gesellschaftsstruktur, für die es nötig ist, Kinder zu brechen/zähmen, um fortzubestehen, ist nicht erhaltenswert. Selbst Pferde müssen nicht gebrochen werden.

Sex ist nur eine der vielen Formen, die Eros annimmt. Wie dem auch sei, Sex hat in unserer Gesellschaft eine besondere Rolle, denn die heftigsten Angriffe auf den kindlichen Eros zielen in der Regel auf seine körperlichen Äußerungen und Wünsche. Der Mythos vom unschuldigen, asexuellen Kind wird benützt, um Kinder ihren eigenen sexuellen Gefühlen und Wünschen zu entfremden. Alles und jedes von Seiten des Kindes, das diesen Mythos anrührt, gibt Anlass zu Besorgnis und wird mit Strafe belegt. Kindern wird nur widerstrebend erlaubt zu masturbieren, sie dürfen selten nackt herumlaufen, und sie werden bloßgestellt, wenn sie zu viel Interesse für den Körper des anderen zeigen, werden gedemütigt, wenn ihre sexuellen Interessen sich auf Personen gleichen Geschlechts richten, und werden verbal und teils auch physisch gezüchtigt, wenn sie sich in sexuelle Spiele mit anderen Kindern einlassen. Und sollte ein Kind die schrecklichste aller möglichen Manifestationen des Eros zeigen – das wäre sexuelles Interesse an einem Erwachsenen – so wird dies als Beweis dafür gesehen, das es missbraucht worden ist. Der Endeffekt davon ist, dass Kinder lernen, den eigenen Körper als Ort gefährlicher, schändlicher und schmutziger Treibe zu erleben. Dieses ist der normale Weg der Kindererziehung in unserer Gesellschaft. So machen es gute Eltern und Lehrer.

Wenn der natürliche Eros der Kinder durch ihre Sorgeberechtigten zerstört wird, geraten sie in eine innere Wut. Die erotischen Impulse wollen nicht verschwinden, obwohl es verboten ist, ihnen Ausdruck zu verleihen. Diese Impulse schwären außerhalb der Skala verbalen Bewußtseins und bersten dann mit einem durch Repression erzeugten Druck hervor. Schließlich brechen diese vereinten Energien durch, als Metapher sexueller Aggression: Die Gang, die schlagende Verbindung, das Schwert, die Kanone, das laute und PS-starke Flugzeug oder Auto, die Rakete oder die Bombe. Diese Aggression muss umgeleitet werden, sie muss weg von den Eltern, Lehrern und Sorgeberechtigten gerichtet werden, die für die Repression verantwortlich sind. Es ist zu schwierig, ohne Billigung und Unterstützung der Menschen zu leben, die man liebt. Und erst recht möchte man sie nicht zerstören. So wird die sexuelle Aggression auf Feinde umgeleitet. Jede Gruppierung, jede Minderheit, kann als untermenschlich oder minderwertig angesehen werden und als willkommener Sündenbock herhalten. Die Unterdrückung des Eros der Kinder führt im Endeffekt dazu, gewalttätige, innerlich leere Bürger heranszubilden, die ihren wahren Bedürfnissen entfremdet sind und die gerne bereit sind, verschiedene Arten von Feinden zu verfolgen und sogar zu töten. Eine Gesellschaft, die auf der Unterdrückung des Eros basiert, benötigt Feindbilder.

Wir müssen den Ursprung der Gewalt nicht in der außergewöhnlichen oder abnormalen Anteilen dieser Gesellschaft suchen. Vielmehr wird Gewalt gesät, unterhalten und gefördert durch die normalen, landläufig akzeptierten Praktiken, mit denen wir Kinder erziehen und miteinander umgehen.

Natürlich erlaubt eine jede Gesellschaft nur extrem ungern eine ernsthafte Hinterfragung ihrer fundamentalen Annahmen über das rechte Leben. Aber genau das ist notwendig, wenn wir weniger gewalttätig werden sollen. Vor allem müssen wir die tief verwurzelte Annahme korrigieren, dass zivilisiertes Leben Unterdrückung benötigt. Wir müssen uns mit unserer Furcht vor dem Eros beschäftigen und all den harmvollen Erziehungspraktiken und pädagogischen Methoden, die auf dieser Furcht beruhen.

• Politische Massnahmen (Gesetze gegen Überwachung, die Einschränkung der Rechte der Geheimdienste usw.)

Es ist jetzt ein Jahr her, und wir lesen folgendes:

Der Nachrichtendienst soll mehr Kompetenzen erhalten. Die Sicherheitspolitische Kommission des Nationalrates hat sich für das neue Gesetz ausgesprochen, das dem Nachrichtendienst unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen das Anzapfen von Telefonen und Computern erlaubt.

Insgesamt war schnell eine ganze „Fibel“ mit Problemen von jungen Menschen zusammengetragen. Das war 1992. Die Gruppe, die sich diese Arbeit gemacht hatte, gab sich den Namen KinderRÄchTsZÄnker, kurz K.R.Ä.T.Z.Ä. Seitdem gibt es im Verein Netzwerk Spiel/Kultur Prenzlauer Berg e.V. ein Projekt, in dem sich Jugendliche mit der Gleichberechtigung von Menschen unabhängig vom Alter beschäftigen. Und neben den alltäglichen Ungerechtigkeiten, denen junge Menschen häufig ausgesetzt sind, stießen sie beim Nachdenken schnell auf mehrere sehr allgemeine Punkte, die die ganze Gesellschaft betreffen: Woher nehmen Eltern das Recht, ihren Kindern Vorschriften zu machen? Ist die Schulpflicht sinnvoll oder sollte sie nicht besser durch ein Bildungsrecht ersetzt werden? Warum haben Kinder kein Wahlrecht?

Mit diesen und ähnlichen Fragen haben sich die KinderRÄchTsZÄnker in den letzten Jahren beschäftigt.

Kinderinteressen

Hauptfrage war immer wieder, wie erreicht werden kann, daß sich tatsächlich etwas ändert. Die KinderRÄchTsZÄnker haben auf mehreren Kinderparlamenten, bei „Kids beraten Senator“, Kindertagen, Kinder-„Gipfeln“ und ähnlichen Veranstaltungen die Erfahrung gemacht, daß es dort fast unmöglich ist, wesentliche Dinge zu diskutieren, geschweige denn, wirklich etwas zu beeinflussen. Typische Forderungen bezogen sich meist auf allgemeine Probleme (die die Erwachsenen eigentlich schon kennen und selbst lösen könnten), wie zum Beispiel die verstärkten Bemühungen der Bundesregierung zur Verbreitung der Energiesparlampe oder das Einrichten einer Tempo-30-Zone, sichererer Überwege vor Schulen, die Qualität des Schulessens und dergleichen. Diese Themen erfassen – so wichtig sie sind – nach Meinung der K.R.Ä.T.Z.Ä. das Hauptproblem nicht: Kinder werden von Erwachsenen nicht wirklich ernst genommen. Vielfach nutzen Politiker Begegnungen mit Kindern zur Selbstdarstellung. Im Zweifelsfall entscheiden sich die Erwachsenen, gerade auch die Politiker, nicht für die Kinderforderungen. Kinder werden von ihnen nicht als Subjekte mit tatsächlich gleichberechtigten Interessen wahrgenommen.

Eine weitere Besonderheit vieler Kindermitbestimmungsinitiativen besteht darin, daß das Thema Schule vielfach ausgeklammert bleibt. Es wird zwar viel über die Gewalt in der Schule geredet, daß aber die Gewalt der Schule, also die vom Schulsystem ausgehende Gewalt, vielleicht eine Ursache für die Gewalt von Jugendlichen ist, das wird nur selten bedacht.
