Could people please not use this list to announce information of no particular interest to the people on the list? Hundreds of thousands of babies are born every day. While the whole phenomenon is menacing, one of them by itself is not newsworthy. Nor is it a difficult achievement–even some fish can do it. (Now, if you were a seahorse, it would be more interesting, since it would be the male that gave birth.)

Following your example, I might send the list an announcement whenever a new GNU program is written. That happens less often than babies are born, it does the world a lot more good, it reflects more conscious creativity and hard work, and some of the readers might actually find the information useful. Even so, I think most of the readers would consider this outside the scope and purpose of the list. Clearly that goes double for babies.

Of course, we have another place for announcements of new GNU programs. If some people like to read birth announcements, perhaps you should set up a suitable list or newsgroup. Perhaps rec.births? (While you’re at it, start rec.deaths for obituaries–they’re usually more interesting to read.)

These birth announcements also spread the myth that having a baby is something to be proud of, which fuels natalist pressure, which leads to pollution, extinction of wildlife, poverty, and ultimately mass starvation.

Perhaps the people who have decided to have no children should start making proud announcements, so as to set a better example. I could start. I’m sure everyone on this list will be glad to know I don’t plan to reproduce myself.

Natürlich haben wir andere Orte für Ankündigungen von GNU-Programmen. Wenn ihr unbedingt Geburtsanzeigen lesen wollt, dann richtet doch eine entsprechende Liste dafür ein. Vielleicht rec.births? (Wenn ihr schon dabei seid: rec.deaths für Todesanzeigen – die sind normalerweise viel interessanter zu lesen.)

Diese Geburtsanzeigen verbreiten auch den Mythos, dass Kinder haben etwas ist, worauf man stolz sein könne – was den Pronatalismus fördert, und das führt zu mehr Verschmutzung, Aussterben von Wildtieren, Armut und schlussendlich zu einer grossen Hungersnot.

Vielleicht sollten die Menschen, die sich entschieden haben, keine Kinder zu haben, anfangen, das stolz anzukündigen, um ein besseres Beispiel zu geben. Ich könnte damit anfangen. Ich bin sicher, jeder auf dieser Liste würde sich freuen, dass ich nicht plane, mich fortzupflanzen.

1. The government and corporate powers have it strongly in their interests to keep drugs illegal. The police forces are largely funded by drugs, either via taxation to support the war on drugs or via direct asset seizure related to the war on drugs. If drugs are legalized, police budgets are going to free fall and a lot of police are going to lose their jobs. Agencies like the DEA will essentially be obsolete. The police also gain a lot of power because of the war on drugs, if they smell weed in your car or house they can search you, they can arrest people for drug charges and offer them plea deals to snitch on targets the police are interested in, they get all kinds of paramilitary toys to try to fight the war on drugs, etc. The politicians love the war on drugs because it directly funds a lot of their friends, in the case of republicans it funds their friends in the private prison industry, in the case of the democrats it funds a huge portion of people who go to college for sociology and social services degrees. In fact, a lot of sociologists and people in social services have absolutely no skills and make the bulk of their money by teaching classes that people who are arrested with drugs are court ordered to attend, or by being „drug abuse specialists“ and working at facilities that people who are arrested with drugs are sentenced to be held at. Many millions of jobs will be lost if drugs are legalized, and billions of dollars going to private industry will no longer be going there, and these are the same private industries that pump tons of money into the campaigns of politicians. So essentially we have a conspiracy to keep drugs illegal between the police, politicians, and major corporations ranging from the private prison industry to the pharmaceutical industry.

Ich möchte mal eine Sache explizit ansprechen, die gerade ein bisschen untergeht. Wir als Hacker-Community leben ja seit vielen Jahren mit der praktischen Gewissheit, dass die Geheimdienste das Internet so gut wie komplett abschnorcheln. Wir wissen einfach, was geht, und es braucht ja keinen Raketentechniker für den Gedankengang, dass wenn es möglich ist, es auch einige Geheimdienste machen werden. Teuer spielt keine Rolle, das wissen wir spätestens aus dem Kalten Krieg (die Geschichte von solchen Spezialubooten kursierte jahrelang, bevor sie es zur New York Times und in die Wikipedia schaffte). Wenn man sich jetzt das bekannt gewordene Ausmaß des Abschnorchelns anguckt, ist niemand wirklich überrascht aus der Technik-Community, wir haben darüber seit vielen Jahren auf den CCC-Kongressen geredet. Aber, und das ist, was ich jetzt mal sagen möchte: Wir haben gegengesteuert. Nein, wir haben nicht verhindern können, dass die Geheimdienste alles tun, um unsere Daten zu klauen. Aber wir haben freie Software geschaffen. Und ich meine jetzt nicht nur PGP und TrueCrypt. Wir als Community haben auch FreeBSD und Linux geschaffen, wir haben Firefox als Open Source Browser, wir haben Jabber-Clients noch und nöcher, wir haben OpenSSL und co. Jede einzelne dieser Technologien hat Schwächen, keine Frage. Aber stellt euch mal vor, das gäbe es alles nicht!

Mitmensch Dumpf sagt das, um aus seiner gespielten Offenheit für jeden Einblick ungesagt eine Pflicht für jeden anderen Menschen zur Offenheit für jeden Einblick zu formen; und um jeden, der sich gegen solche Offenheit verweigert, subtil der verborgenen Schändlichkeiten und Widerwärtigkeiten zu bezichtigen, die hinter der Fassade der Privatheit gären mögen.

Interessanterweise gelingt es Mitmensch Dumpf in seiner Dumpfheit niemals, den gleichen groben Hebel auf das Treiben der staatlichen Geheimdienste anzuwenden, das mit so viel Sorgfalt vor den Menschen (und damit auch vor Mitmensch Dumpf) verborgen wird, in deren Auftrag dieses Treiben vorgeblich geschieht.
