Ankunft, Samstag Abend. Es ist dunkel. Ich schlendere durch das Gelände. Ich kann nur erahnen, dass das alles an einem See liegt; Dunkelheit lässt alles gleichmässig schwarz erscheinen. Der Dance Temple ist noch nicht in Betrieb, Lastwagen, Kranen und Scheinwerfer stehen herum und die letzten Planen werden nach oben gehievt. Alles ist noch ruhig und geheimnisvoll. Nichtsdestotrotz wuseln schon eine Menge Menschen durch die Gegend, Restaurants haben geöffnet und die Gartenanlagen sind wunderhübsch beleuchtet. Diese Bilder zeige ich aber erst im Kapitel Nachtleben.

Alles ist aus Naturalien hergestellt. Es existieren keine rechten Winkel, der Architektur liegt die heilige Geometrie zugrunde. Wir blicken hier gerade durch den Durchgang zur Healing Area. Im blauen Kuppeldom finden Tanz- und Yoga-Workshops statt.

43 Jahre nach dem legendären Woodstock-Festival scheinen die Hippies in der Versenkung verschwunden. Aber es gibt sie noch, die bunte Gegenkultur. In Portugal halten sie derzeit vom 28. Juli – 4. August bei psychedelischer Musik und fern der Öffentlichkeit ein Gipfeltreffen ab.
Die Region Beira Interior im Zentralosten von Portugal ist das, was man gemeinhin als Einöde bezeichnet. «Das ist das Ende der Welt, keine Arbeit, keine Menschen, nichts», klagt lautstark ein nicht mehr ganz nüchterner Rentner in der Kneipe am sonst verlassenen Hauptplatz der Gemeinde Idanha-a-Nova. Auf der Suche nach einer Zukunft flieht die Jugend nach Lissabon und ins Ausland, auf den Straßen trifft man vorwiegend Ältere. Alle zwei Jahre aber, pünktlich zum Vollmond im August, fallen zigtausende exotisch gekleidete Menschen in die 10.000-Seelen-Gemeinde ein. Das «Boom-Festival», wichtigste Trance-Musik-Veranstaltung Europas, ist auch Gipfeltreffen der zeitgenössischen Hippies aus aller Welt.
«Boom ist das Highlight des Festivalkalenders und meine spirituelle Heimat, alle lächeln hier nur immerzu», schwärmt der in London lebende südafrikanische DJ Shane Gobi nach seinem Auftritt bei dem seit 1997 stattfindenden Festival. Hin und weg sind auch die Besucher. «Boom ist ein Spielplatz, auf dem man das innere Kind in sich freilassen kann», erklärt die Inderin Alia. Der 22-jährige Klaus aus Bremen ringt auf die Frage nach der Faszination am Event nach Worten. «Ich sage es so: Eintritt kostet 150 Euro, das ist für einen Studenten wie mich sehr viel Kohle. Aber ich würde auch 1500 zahlen.»
Das Festival wurde zwar als Psy-Trance-Veranstaltung geboren, öffnete sich aber im Laufe der Jahre nicht nur anderen Underground-Musikrichtungen, sondern auch vielen anderen Bereichen der Künste. Heutzutage reicht die Palette von Malerei und Graffiti über Theater, Video und Kino bis hin zum Skulpturen- und Landschaftsbau. Es gibt Workshops, Konferenzen, Ausstellungen, Beratungszentren und «Healing areas» mit Yoga, Massage, Meditation. «Das ist alternative Kultur», erklärt Mitorganisator und Pressemann Artur Mendes. Mehr als 400 Künstler nehmen teil, Künstler wie Techno-Mann Marcel Dettmann (43) vom Berliner Club «Berghain».
Öko-Toiletten und Plastik-Verbot
Damit aber nicht genug. Die «interkulturelle, transgenerationelle und multidisziplinare» Biennale gilt als eines der ökologischsten Musikfestivals der Welt. «Beim Entertainment geht es nicht nur um Spaß, es geht auch darum, Lösungen für die Menschen zu finden», teilt Mendes auf der Festival-Internetseite mit. In den Monaten vor dem Fest wurde an einem Stausee mitten im Nichts 280 Kilometer nordöstlich von Lissabon an der Grenze zu Spanien eine wahre Alternativ-Stadt aus dem Boden gestampft. Ein «psychedelic Village», das sich als «autonome Zone» versteht. Dazu wurden Materialien früherer Boom-Ausgaben recycelt, aber auch von Mainstream-Shows wie «Rock in Rio».
Es gibt modernste Biokompost-Toiletten aus Schweden, dafür ist Plastik tabu. Wind- und Solarenergie nehmen immer mehr Platz ein. Dieses Jahr wurde außerdem Biotechnologie eingesetzt, um das benutzte Trinkwasser mit Hilfe von Wasserpflanzen wieder zu reinigen. Brasilianische Experten des Ökoinstitus Ipec bringen ihr Wissen in Sachen der sogenannten Permakultur ein, bei der die Planung der Lebensräume von ethisch basierten Leitsätzen und Prinzipien bestimmt wird. Amerikaner bauen mit Bambus stabil und ökologisch. «Wir haben die wohl größte Biokonstruktionsschau Europas», behauptet Mendes.
Neben den vier Tanzflächen gibt es auf dem riesigen Areal auch Restaurants, Bars und Kinderkrippen, Farben sprühende psychedelische Skulpturen und Installationen. Nirgendwo sind dagegen die sonst allgegenwärtigen Logos der Handy-, Fast-Food- oder Getränkefirmen zu sehen. «Unabhängigkeit ja, Marketing nein», lautet das Motto der Organisatoren. Der Kartenverkauf und sowie die Gastronomie bringen ohnehin genug Geld ein, um die Kosten zu decken und einen Gewinn zu erwirtschaften. Werbung muss und will die Organisationsfirma «Good Mood», die in 45 Ländern 101 «Botschafter» hat, nicht machen.

Die erzkonservativen Bewohner Idanhas, darunter die vielen ganz in schwarz gekleideten Witwen, mussten sich zuerst an die Besucher gewöhnen. «Das waren am Anfang Außerirdische für mich», räumt die 75-jährige Maria ein. Wieso das ganz schnell anders wurde, erklärt ein Wirt: «Die haben viel Geld.»
Die wirtschaftlichen Auswirkungen des Festivals seien für die Stadt sehr stark, sagt Idanhas Vize-Bürgermeister Armindo Jacinto. «Die Verbindung aus den fortschrittlichsten Maßnahmen zur ökologischen Nachhaltigkeit, den multikulturellen Präsentationen und den wirtschaftlichen Faktoren machen Boom für uns zu einer einzigartigen Chance», betont Jacinto. Man wolle in Zusammenarbeit mit «Good Mood» unter anderem ein Hotel aus umweltfreundlichen Materialien wie Stroh bauen, Kurse über Nachhaltigkeit anbieten, öffentliche Komposttoiletten aufstellen und Ökoprodukte produzieren, die man auch im Ausland der Entertainment-Branche anbieten werde.
«Neben Trance-Freaks ziehen solche Festivals auch die modernen Hippies an», stellt DJ Jahbo fest, dessen Eltern «Woodstock-Kinder» sind. Es sei in der heutigen Welt wichtig, «anders» zu sein. «Angst habe ich vor dem Normalsein», sagt der 29-jährige Däne. Dass zur Bewusstseinserweiterung auch der Konsum vor allem synthetischer Drogen gehört, ist bei Trance-Fans – «Freigeister» nennen sich die «Boomies» – selbstverständlich. Entgegen den Befürchtungen hielten sich die Probleme jedoch in Grenzen. Nur wenige Menschen wurden wegen Drogenhandels festgenommen.

The Burning Mountain Festival is a 4 days experience of radical self expression and self commitment. The goal of the Festival is all about community and culture. It’s a social survival camp. As our social life is transforming more and more into a digital way, we want to be able to connect and exchange and interact “offline” with each other. The Burning Mountain Festival is not about consuming, it is about participating. We believe that this peaceful interaction is best achieved through commitment and sharing. The unifying action is dancing. Therefore, music will always be a great part of our culture.
Anyone may be a part of Burning Mountain. We welcome and respect the stranger.
Burning Mountain encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on his or her inner resources.

Es ist Nacht. Die umliegenden Berge reflektieren Licht und Schall, der dumpf durch das Tal dröhnt. Auf was lassen wir uns da ein? Eine Technoparty? Eigentlich nicht so mein Ding. Aber die Philosophie klingt toll und ich bin Fan von alternativen Festivals mit exotischen Erdlingen, wie letztes Jahr das Wacken.
Aber im Gegensatz zum Wacken sind die Menschen bunter angezogen. Keine blutverschmierten Schädel, keine Schwerter, keine echte Gitarrenmusik. Sondern UV-aktive, bunte Dekorationen, Laseranlagen und synthetischer Sound erwartet uns. Willkommen im Wunderland.

Was 1995 in Weimar startete und sich in den darauf folgenden Jahren über ganz Deutschland ausweitete, ist heute ein europäisches Thema – das Virus der Reitermania! Über 600 Shows haben die Reiter mittlerweile auf dem Buckel. Ob Festivals in Frankreich, Holland, Spanien oder UK; hier seien im Besonderen die Performances bei den Kultfestivals Download in UK, dem Wacken Open Air, dem Summer Breeze und With Full Force, Headlinershows in Russland und Tschechien, Rumänien, Ungarn, Spanien, Italien, Holland und viele mehr erwähnt! Auch erfreut sich die Reitermania Top Medien-Berichterstattung! So schrieb die Russische Presse: „Die Apokalyptischen Reiter schockierten alle, das Publikum, die Medien und auch die Organisatoren! Es wa ein Spektakel der Weltklasse, einer der denkwürdigsten und markantesten Konzert in der Geschichte von St. Petersburg.“ Englische Medien beschreiben DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER als den „most criminally underrated act from Germany“.
DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER sind mehr als nur ein weitere Rock-Band, sie sind Menschen, die sich Gedanken machen zu unserer Welt und dies in all ihren Werken musikalisch verarbeiten. Die Inspiration ist das Leben selbst, mit all seinen emotionalen Facetten. Es ist das erzählen von Geschichten und das weiter tragen von Erfahrung. Das Reisen spielt hierbei eine wichtige Rolle, da es das Streifen und Eintauchen in andere Lebens- und Denkweisen ermöglicht, weil es Schönheit und Abgründe offenbart und die eigene Meinung fördert. Auch das Thema Apokalypse wird von den REITERN immer wiederbearbeitet, da sie glauben, dass die Menschheit in eine falsche Richtung strebt und sie sich äußern müssen. DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER versuchen, ihr Publikum viel durchleben zu lassen und sie positiv gestimmt und entspannt zu entlassen.
Daß die Fangemeinde der Band ständig weiter wächst, machen nicht nur ihre stets vollen Shows sichtbar, sondern auch die Entwicklung der REITER-Alben in den Charts. Ihre letzten drei Alben entwickelten sich mit ständigem Aufwärtstrend. Erfreute sich das 2003 veröffentlichte Album „Have A Nice Trip“ einer erstmaligen Chartplatzierung in den Top 100, ging es mit „Riders Of A Storm“ schon steil bergauf und das Album stieg auf #31 der Media Control Album Charts ein. Ihr letztes Werk „Licht“ schaffte dann den längst verdienten Top 30-Charts-Sprung, so dass nun alle Wege für das neue Album „Moral & Wahnsinn“ bereitet sind!
Selbiges Meisterwerk wurde in den Principal Studios bei Münster aufgenommen und für die Produktion zeichnen DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER höchst selbst plus Vincent Sorg verantwortlich, der auch schon die vorangegangen Alben „Licht“ und „Riders On The Storm“ in Szene setzte. Er übernahm auch Mixing und Mastering. „Wir verlassen das Studio mit dem Gefühl, etwas Einzigartiges, noch nie Dagewesenes für die Ewigkeit festgehalten zu haben. Wahnsinn ist Fantasie, Moral ein trockener Schoß“, so die REITER selbst über ihr brandneues Stück Musikgeschichte.
