Auf der ganzen Welt haben sich Menschen zu Kommunen zusammengeschlossen und leben in ihren natürlichen Kulturkreisen, jede mit ihren Eigenarten und Spezialitäten. Überregional schliesst man sich zu einer Föderation zusammen, die immer aus wechselnden Mitgliedern der Kommunen besteht. Manchmal gehen Kinder zur Föderation und vertreten ihre Interessen. Sie haben eine Stimme und werden als vollwertiges Mitglied der Gesellschaft gezählt und respektiert, denn sie können uns vieles zeigen. Jeder Mensch findet irgendwo seine Aufgabe, ist aber nicht gezwungen, nach einer zu suchen, oder seine Tätigkeit mit anderen zu vergleichen und messen. Da gibt es Milchhändler, Imker, Netzwerkspezialisten, Händler, Schreiner, Geschichtenerzähler, Musiker, Tierfreunde und Gärtner – oder gleich Menschen mit allem zusammen. In jeder Gilde finden sich Menschen im Alter von 1-130 Jahren, und wenn Menschen mit viel Erfahrung auf Frischlinge treffen, lernen die Kleinen sehr schnell und vor allem: Praktische Fähigkeiten. Dank der Gilde der Nuklearphysik steht in jeder Kommune ein Reaktor, der die Energie aus dem Raum selbst transponiert. Kunst ist überall. Jeder Tag ein Fest. Der Umgang mit psychotropen Hilfsmitteln ist bewusst und wird für verschiedene Situationen angemessen genutzt und wirkt bereichernd. Es gibt ganze Archive voller Wissen und Bücher, wo die Geschichte, Forschung und Erkenntnisse bewahrt werden. Jeder hat dazu freien Zugang. Die Gilde der Raumfahrt entwickelt an geeigneten Plätzen Raumschiffe.

Because biographies of famous scientists tend to edit out their mistakes, we underestimate the degree of risk they were willing to take. And because anything a famous scientist did that wasn’t a mistake has probably now become the conventional wisdom, those choices don’t seem risky either.

Biographies of Newton, for example, understandably focus more on physics than alchemy or theology. The impression we get is that his unerring judgment led him straight to truths no one else had noticed. How to explain all the time he spent on alchemy and theology? Well, smart people are often kind of crazy.

But maybe there is a simpler explanation. Maybe the smartness and the craziness were not as separate as we think. Physics seems to us a promising thing to work on, and alchemy and theology obvious wastes of time. But that’s because we know how things turned out. In Newton’s day the three problems seemed roughly equally promising. No one knew yet what the payoff would be for inventing what we now call physics; if they had, more people would have been working on it. And alchemy and theology were still then in the category Marc Andreessen would describe as „huge, if true.“

Newton made three bets. One of them worked. But they were all risky.

Artificial Intelligence provides a conceptual framework to understand mind and universe in new ways, clearing the obstacles that hindered the progress of philosophy and psychology. Let us see how AI can help us to understand how our minds create the experience of a universe.

Unlike the machine learning systems of the past, minds are not just classifiers or policy optimizers. Minds are not accumulators of knowledge about the world. Minds are generative systems: they actively produce the world that we subjectively experience. Ordinary day-time experiences are in fact dreams constrained by sensory data. This simple insight of contemporary cognitive science turns realist notions of embodiment on their head. The idea of the brain as a dreaming machine opens a way to understand the nature of our experiences.

This is the proposed fourth installment of a series of presentations about using AI perspectives to understand minds and their relationship to the universe. „How to build a mind“ (30c3) suggested specifications for an architecture of cognition; „From computation to consciousness“ (31c3) explored the mind’s computational foundations; „Computational metapsychology“ (32c3) discussed the individual and social construction of meaning. „Machine dreams“ sketches how the computational machinery of our brains leads to our experience a subjective world. We will look at the conductor theory of consciousness, some of the mental structures contributing to our models of self and world, and the unreasonable effectiveness of neural processes in modeling physics.

YESS! Das Boomfestival wird weiterexistieren! Die Organisatoren konnten einen zusätzlichen Kredit aufnehmen und zusammen mit den Erträgen aus dem Crowdfunding kam der Kauf dieses heiligen Stück Landes in Portugal zustande. Grossartig!

We are currently living in 2 worlds that mark the past, present and future of the Boom Festival. While some members of our team are dismantling what’s left of the 2016 edition and working on post-production, others are taking care of the agreement deal for the purchase of the Boomland. We are happy to share that the land is now ours! It has been a truly emotional rollercoaster for us. We feel deeply tired yet very happy about what’s happened during the Full Moon of August; at the same time, we feel a sense of accomplishment for giving Boom a home after seven years of intense work and resilience, 19 years after the festival’s birth.
