Wenn ich am Kiosk die Regale mit den Computerfachzeitschriften überfliege, dann lauten die Schlagzeilen seit Jahren(!) meistens: „Windows – endlich sicher“ – „Windows entrümpeln“ – „Windows – so schnell wie noch nie!“ – „10 Tipps zur Wartung von Windows“.

Mein Gott, dieses DAU-Gebrunze hängt mir sowas vom Hals hinaus! Ich will nicht wissen, wie man sein Windows flickt. Erstens habe ich keins und zweitens ist das nur lästig. Diese Magazine werben mit dicken Schlagzeilen und billigen Heft-CDs mit viel Shareware-Schrott.

Gibt es denn keine hochstehende Informatikzeitschrift, die sich ein wenig mit allen Aspekten der Informatik befasst?

Besitzer eines Zyxel ADSL-Modems: Macht Euer Gerät auch manchmal unerwartete Neustarts? Seit geraumer Zeit ist das bei mir der Fall. Das Modem wurde auch schon mit einem anderen ausgetauscht – allerdings vom gleichen Hersteller. Das Problem bestand aber immer noch. Oft gab es Zeiten, wo man überhaupt nicht mehr online kam – und als ich dann das Telefon ausgezogen habe und es per Zufall wieder funktioniert hat, dachte ich: Klarer Fall, es liegt an der Telefonleitung.

Umso mehr verwunderte es mich, als eines Morgens das Telefon eingesteckt war und auch das Internet funktionierte das Modem online war. Seltsam…

Bis ich mich vor kurzem entschied, bei Steg ein neues Modem zu kaufen. Und siehe da: Der Verkäufer fragte mich, ob ich ein älteres ADSL Modem habe, und ob es auch immer Neustarts macht…

Was ist passiert: Die Swisscom macht nach und nach Upgrades an den Leitungen; irgendwie wird das Signal verändert. Die älteren Modems kommen damit nicht klar und machen aufgrund von Timing-Problemen Neustarts.

Nervig! Und was lernen wir daraus: Zyxel stinkt. Da ist man mit einem günstigeren U.S. Robotics Router, welcher obendrein sogar noch mehr Funktionen hat, wesentlich besser bedient…

Heute Morgen: Browser öffnen, www.kabelsalat.li und – Error: Connection refused. Toll – und ich sitze hier im Geschäft und kann nichts dagegen unternehmen. Das ist verdammt unangenehm – man sitzt da, ständig mit den Gedanken im Hinterkopf, dass die Seite für niemanden erreichbar ist, vermutlich für den Rest des Tages. Und man hat keine Ahnung, was das Problem sein könnte. Hat sich der Server einfach so mal heruntergefahren? Hat sich etwa jemand unerlaubt Zugang verschafft? Das wäre der Albtraum. Vielleicht hat Hostorama den Server abgeschossen? Schnell ein Mail an den Support verfasst. Eine halbe Stunde später: Bitte geben Sie uns Ihre Login-Daten. Jajaa, aber natürlich gern. Also gut, dann kümmere ich mich eben selbst um das Problem, später.

Zuhause angekommen, versuchte ich es mit einem simplen Ping. Hmm, funktioniert wunderbar. Login per SSH – funzt auch! So, was läuft denn noch? Tor, Jabber – eigentlich alles. Nur httpd-Prozesse sehe ich keine. Aha, Apache hat sich verabschiedet. Warum? Beim durchschauen des Logfiles sehe ich warum:

Juhui, kein freier Speicher mehr verfügbar. Vermutlich hat TOR alles für sich beansprucht und so viele Verbindungen aufgebaut, dass für Apache keinen Platz mehr da war – und tschüss! Also von RAM-Limiten war nie die Rede… Das werde ich nun aber gleich klären.

Und es ist soweit – die nächste Version von Ubuntu wurde veröffentlicht: Version 6.10, Codename Edgy Eft. Ein neues Startupsystem namens Upstart, ein 3D beschleunigter Desktop und viele Programmaktualisierungen sind in diesem Update dabei.

Bin ja mal gespannt auf Upstart. Es soll die alten Startupskripte ablösen und das System nun ereignisgesteuert hochfahren – Beispiel: Wenn der Webserver gestartet werden soll, muss zuerst das Netzwerk hochgefahren werden. Dieses Konzept soll das Booten erheblich beschleunigen.

Auch gespannt bin ich auf die 3D Unterstützung. XGL kriege ich auf Dapper Drake momentan jedenfalls nicht zum Laufen…
