Selbstsicher wie Pippi Langstrumpf stellt sich das knapp 1,50 Meter kurze Mädchen mit seinen zwei nachlässig geflochtenen Zöpfchen an den Freitagen, an denen sie daheim in Stockholm ist, vor den Riksdag und demonstriert. „Schulstreik für das Klima“ steht auf ihrem Schild, das fast größer wirkt als sie selbst. Auf Handzetteln klagt die 16-Jährige die Erwachsenen an: „Ihr scheisst auf meine Zukunft.“
Ihre Botschaften klingen einleuchtend. Es liege auf der Hand, warum Erwachsene so wenig für den Klimaschutz tun: Die meisten würden kaum über die nächsten 30 Jahre hinaus denken, weil sie dann eben nicht mehr am Leben seien. Sie und andere Kinder dagegen schon.
Greta geht offen damit um, dass sie das Asperger-Syndrom hat, eine Variante des Autismus. „Das macht, dass ich alles Schwarz oder Weiss sehe“, sagte sie. „Je mehr ich über den Klimawandel las, desto verzweifelter wurde ich und dann konnte ich an nichts anderes mehr denken, man steckt dann fest“, beschrieb sie den Auslöser ihres kompromisslos wirkenden Engagements. „Nichts sei Schwarz-Weiss, sagen Erwachsene, aber der Klimawandel ist genau das. Entweder man tut jetzt etwas Radikales, oder die Menschheit stirbt aus.“
Irritiert sind die Schweden, dass Gretas radikale Forderungen kaum inhaltliches Echo finden, und sie Lob aus den Reihen der Reichen und Mächtigen erhält. Denn wer der 16-Jährigen genau zuhört, erkennt, dass sie am liebsten den Kapitalismus abschaffen will und die auf Wachstum basierende Marktwirtschaft infrage stellt.
Nicht „im System“ müsse repariert werden, sagt Greta auf fast allen Konferenzen, sondern „das System selbst müsse ausgewechselt werden.“ Paradoxerweise applaudieren ihr danach die Vertreter jenes Systems und machen Selfies mit ihr.
Diese blanke Ehrlichkeit und die Unfähigkeit soziale Regeln zu decodieren, isoliert viele Menschen mit Autismus – gerade Teenager, die normalerweise viel Gewicht auf die Meinung ihrer Peergroup legen. Greta Thunberg aber engagiert sich nicht fürs Klima, weil dies gerade hip ist und sie auf der Öko-Welle surft.
