Die Tribute von Panem spielt in einer nicht näher definierten Zukunft, nachdem Nordamerika durch Naturkatastrophen, Kriege und den Einfluss des Menschen größtenteils zerstört wurde. Aus den Trümmern entstand die diktatorische Nation Panem, welche ursprünglich aus dem regierenden reichen Kapitol und 13 umliegenden ärmeren Distrikten bestand. Der Name des Landes Panem leitet sich vom Ausspruch Panem et circenses (lat. ‚Brot und Spiele‘) des römischen Dichters Juvenal ab. (Mit Brot und Spielen sollten die Römer davon abgehalten werden, gegen den Staat aufzubegehren.)
Schließlich kam es wegen der immer größeren Ausbeutung der Menschen zu einem Aufstand der Distriktbewohner gegen das Kapitol. Dieser wurde jedoch niedergeschlagen, wobei Distrikt 13 scheinbar vollständig vernichtet wurde. Als Mahnung für die Distrikte führte die Regierung die sogenannten Hungerspiele ein. Diese sollen die Distrikte einschüchtern und daran erinnern, dass sie der Macht der Regierung schutzlos ausgeliefert sind.
Hungerspiele
Jedes Jahr werden aus jedem der zwölf Distrikte ein Mädchen und ein Junge im Alter zwischen 12 und 18 Jahren ausgelost, die sogenannten Tribute, die sich in einer Freilichtarena bis auf den Tod bekämpfen müssen, bis nur noch ein Tribut übrig ist. Die Spiele werden im Fernsehen in ganz Panem übertragen, und die Bewohner der Distrikte werden gezwungen, die Hungerspiele als Fest zu feiern.
Katniss Everdeen
Katniss ist ein 16-jähriges Mädchen aus Distrikt 12 und die Protagonistin der Geschichte. Sie tritt als weibliches Tribut für ihren Distrikt in den 74. Hungerspielen in der Arena an. In der Geschichte Panems ist Katniss das erste Tribut aus Distrikt 12, das freiwillig an den Spielen teilnimmt. Dies tut sie, um ihre Schwester Primrose vor dem grausamen Schicksal der Tribute zu bewahren, da diese ursprünglich ausgelost wurde. Der gemeinsame Vater von Katniss und Prim kam vor einigen Jahren bei einer Gasexplosion in den Kohlebergwerken ums Leben, woraufhin ihre Mutter an schweren Depressionen erkrankte und für ihre Kinder kaum noch ansprechbar war. Somit war Katniss gezwungen, die Versorgung der Familie zu übernehmen und deren Überleben zu sichern. Regelmäßig erlegt sie im Wald mit ihrem besten Freund Gale Wild, um dieses auf dem Schwarzmarkt, dem sogenannten „Hob“, verkaufen zu können, dies ist derzeitig die einzige finanzielle Quelle, die ihrer Familie zur Verfügung steht. Der Name Katniss leitet sich von einer englischen Bezeichnung für das Pfeilkraut ab.
Katniss ist der Held und Hoffnungsträger der Rebellion. Sie wird in eine Arena geworfen, wo sie Gefahren ausgesetzt ist und ums Überleben kämpfen muss. Eine exzellente Bogenschützin, die ihre Entscheidungen mit dem Herzen fällt. Ihr starker Charakter kann keine Persönlichkeit vorspielen, die sie nicht ist. Wortkarg, introvertiert, direkt, fasst sie folgende Werte noch einmal schön zusammen: Mut, Intelligenz, Integrität, Wahrheit, Gerechtigkeit, Authentizität, Stärke, Verletzlichkeit.
Und damit reiht sich ein weiterer Charakter in die Reihen der starken Frauen meiner Heldengalerie ein; neben Alyx Vance, Sarah Connor, Ellen Ripley und Newt.
