Ich hätte nicht gedacht, was alles passieren wird, als ich im April 2012 ein paar Verbesserungen am Open Source Pastebin Stikked veröffentlicht habe.
Stikked ist ein Pastebin – eine Webanwendung, die es Benutzern ohne Anmeldung erlaubt, beliebige Textschnipsel zu veröffentlichen. Darüber habe ich berichtet.
Stikked sieht im Vergleich zu anderen Pastebins gut aus, hat ein paar nette Features wie „Paste replies“ und basiert auf CodeIgniter. Das freut mich besonders, denn mit CodeIgniter habe ich schon ein paar Projekte gemacht.
Doch der ursprüngliche Autor hat das Projekt aufgegeben. Es ist wie ein Haus, dass langsam Risse bekommt. Da fallen ein paar Ziegel ab, die Haustür schliesst nicht mehr richtig – es bedarf einer Renovation. Alle stören sich daran, ein paar Patches fliegen in Foren umher, doch niemand kümmert sich darum, sie einzubauen und eine neue Version zu veröffentlichen. Ich glaube, da kann ich euch helfen.
So habe ich mich entschlossen, die Fehler auszubessern und da ein bisschen zu renovieren. Ich habe den Unterbau auf den neusten Stand gebracht, Farbhervorhebungen für alle unterstützten Programmiersprachen hinzugefügt, die Installation vereinfacht und automatisiert, Unterstützung für bit.ly eingebaut, und viele kleine Fehler behoben.
Das Haus ist renoviert, es funktioniert alles wieder. Stellen wir das Projekt auf Github!
Natürlich lasse ich auch eine Version bei mir unter paste.scratchbook.ch laufen, damit jeder sie ausprobieren kann. Nach ein paar Wochen wurden auch schon ein paar Benutzer darauf aufmerksam, und die ersten Änderungswünsche treffen ein:
neofutur hat einen Opensource URL-Shortener, und fragt mich, ob ich nicht den statt bit.ly einbauen könnte. Aber klar doch!

Wunderbar! Meine kleinen Verbesserungen sind sehr geschätzt. Mit dem Glücksgefühl kommt auch gleichzeitig ein Gefühl von Verantwortung. Jetzt bin ich der Maintainer. Werde ich es schaffen, alle Wünsche von den Leuten zu berücksichtigen? Hmm. Ich brauche eine Philosophie.
Die Philosophie von Stikked
Stikked soll es so einfach wie möglich machen, Texte schnell im Internet zu veröffentlichen. Das beginnt bei der Installation und bei der Infrastruktur. Die meisten Hoster bieten PHP & MySQL an – deshalb ist diese Technologie gesetzt. Jeder soll Stikked bei sich installieren können, auch technisch nicht so versierte Benutzer. Im Hinterkopf habe ich Internetaktivisten im Iran, die schnell eine Plattform brauchen, um ihre Leaks zu veröffentlichen. Aber natürlich auch Programmierer, die eine Möglichkeit suchen, ihren Code einfach zu veröffentlichen, aber die Daten bei sich haben wollen.
Mit dieser Philosophie im Hinterkopf kann ich gut abwägen, welche Vorschläge ich integriere, und welche nicht. Die Konfigurationsdatei darf auch nicht zuu gross werden. Also fangen wir an.
Es wächst und gedeiht
Ich will eine API. Dann kann man nämlich Textschnipsel via Skript an Stikked schicken. Ich denke da an meine Tor-Server, die zum Beispiel Statistiken über die Bandbreite 4x täglich berichten. Damit ich darüber informiert werde, möchte ich gerne einen RSS-Feed über die Antworten zu einem Textschnipsel. Eine Möglichkeit, ein Backup der Stikked Datenbank über ein passwortgeschütztes Verzeichnis zu erstellen wäre auch nicht schlecht. Pastes sollen einbettbar sein. Ein Freund im IRC hat Stikked bei sich installiert und wünscht sich Echtzeit-Texthervorhebung. Ich finde das cool und baue es ein.
Ein paar verregnete Sonntagnachmittage weiter, und die neue Version ist draussen.
177 Downloads – wow! Die Leute installieren und benutzen es. Wird es bei ihnen funktionieren? Gefällt es ihnen? Ich bin etwas ängstlich. Nicht immer klappte die Installation; aber viele Fehler waren auch selbstverschuldet und die meisten konnten sich rasch selbst helfen.
Stikked wird auch bei den Spammern beliebt. Jetzt muss ich mich um Anti-Spam Features kümmern. Ein Captcha einbauen, eine Verwaltungsoberfläche mit IP-Sperren implementieren. Ausserdem will ich wissen, welche Textschnipsel beliebt sind und baue eine Statistikseite ein. Aus Freude und Just for fun kopiere ich manchmal Texte von Aktivisten aus pastebin.com in mein Stikked. Und eine Sammlung mit Tor-Links. Ui, und diese ist beliebt: Aktueller Stand: Besuche von 12’250 unterschiedlichen IP-Adressen.
Natürlich sind da auch heikle Informationen dabei, wenn plötzlich Aktivisten meine Stikked-Installation nutzen. Anonymous brach irgendwo ein und legte die Datenbank offen: #ProjectHellFire – 1 million accounts/records leaked! #TeamGhostShell

Ich find das geil. Stikked ist auch eine Plattform für Aktivisten. Dezentral. Mit Klartext. Ich mags!
Mithilfe aus der Gemeinschaft
lightswitch05 möchte die Möglichkeit für eine Authentifizierung an einem Firmenserver. Das ist zwar etwas gegen die Philosophie, aber man muss es ja nicht aktivieren.
Er hat eine Version von Stikked bei sich erstellt (sowas nennt sich Fork), und die Änderungen gleich selber implementiert:
Ein Klick, und ich hab seine Änderungen bei mir drin. Ich muss nichts weiter tun. Boah… Jemand anderes hat sich für mich hingesetzt und eine Funktion geschrieben, die er vermisst hat. Die landet jetzt wieder bei mir, und andere werden davon einen Nutzen daraus ziehen. Ist das nicht wunderbar?
Und das ist nicht das erste mal. Ein paar Leute haben eine Version bei sich erstellt und sie verändert. Vielleicht weil ihnen etwas nicht gepasst hat. Oder weil sie selber etwas weiterentwickeln wollen. Das kann man. Das darf man.
All diese Verzweigungen und Zusammenführungen von Versionen sehen dann so aus:
rohan hat Unterstützung für die Sprache longcat hinzugefügt. Mal sehen, vielleicht schickt er mir ja eine Anfrage wenn er fertig ist, ob ich seine Änderungen übernehme.

Meine Güte! Sie nimmt alles auseinander. Die Installation. Die Konfiguration. Die LDAP-Authentifizierung von lightswitch05. Der Shorturl-Service von neofutur. Textschnipsel einbetten. Meine API. Sie hat sich ausführlich damit befasst, und alles funktioniert. Mein Kinnladen ist am Boden.. 😀
Das ist schon ein spezielles Gefühl, wenn jemand die eigene Software auseinandernimmt und Freude daran hat. Und sie nach seinen Wünschen anpasst:

Leute, macht mit! Schreibt freie Software! So wird die Welt zu einem besseren Ort. Das hat auch Jacob Appelbaum an seiner Eröffnungsrede am 29C3 gesagt.
Ihr müsst nicht alles können. Aber wenn ihr etwas gut könnt, dann helft mit. Ich habe Stikked auch nur übernommen und verbessert. Aber ich weiss nicht, wie man z.B. ein Installationspaket für Arch Linux schnürt. Dafür weiss das the_compiler. Und er macht das auch gleich. Jemand anderes kümmert sich um LDAP, und wieder jemand anders behebt einen Fehler. Es finden sich begeisterte Leute zusammen, die mithelfen. Jeder so, wie er kann und mag. Und es muss nicht perfekt sein. Das, was jemand anfängt, stellt ein anderer fertig.
Eine Kette ist so schwach wie ihr schwächstes Glied. Aber ein Netzwerk ist so stark wie alle seine Mitglieder!
Freiheit. Software so zu nutzen und anzupassen, wie man möchte.
Gleichheit. Jeder darf mitmachen.
Solidarität. Freiwillig und kooperativ mit anderen zusammenarbeiten.
