Erinnert ihr euch an die „Switch“-Kampagne von Apple damals? apple.com/switch – Das gleiche passiert jetzt wieder, aber in die andere Richtung: Switch to Linux!

Ja, ich habe es getan. Schon vor ein paar Monaten. Ich brach aus dem Apfelparadiesgarten aus und bin komplett auf GNU/Linux umgestiegen. Davon geträumt habe ich schon immer, aber immer wieder gab es Dinge, die mich an Mac OS X fesselten. Exposé. Videobearbeitung. iTunes und mein iPod. Vorschau.app. Funktionierendes Bluetooth und VPN mit einem Klick aus der Menüleiste aus. Mail.app. Mit Ctrl und dem Scrollrad in den Bildschirm hineinzoomen. Oder mit zwei Fingern auf dem Touchpad scrollen.
Kleine Dinge. Aber sie funktionieren, und das eben gut. Dieses Edel-Unix kommt von einem Hersteller aus einem Guss, und es funktioniert wunderbar. Die Funktionen und die Art, es zu bedienen, waren anderen immer ein paar Schritte voraus.

Und dann kamen Dinge, die mir immer mehr auf den Sack gingen:

• Apple macht Exposé kaputt
• Das Durchsuchen von E-Mails dauert lang oder funktioniert gar nicht (meine Mailbox hat >20’000 E-Mails – und ja, ich bewahre alle meine Mails auf, aber bei mir zuhause und nicht in einer Wolke)
• Scrollen im iPhoto ist dermassen ruckelig und schrottig; da sieht man mehr Beachbälle als Fotos. Allgemein bei vielen Programmen, z.b wenn iTunes den iPod synchronisiert.
• Die Icons im Finder waren mal farbig und schön. Apple malt alle grau und monoton an. Igitt. Und ich kann absolut nichts dagegen tun – ich bin den Entscheidungen von Apple einfach nur unterworfen!

Während dieser Zeit passierten noch andere Dinge:

• Richard Stallman hält einen Vortrag an der ETH und inspiriert mich mit seiner Philosophie von freier Software
• Ich schaue beim CCC Zürich im Hackerspace vorbei und treffe auf liebe Menschen, die sich mit Linux gut auskennen und mir helfen können.

Was mir endgültig den Gong gegeben hat, ist das:

• Betriebssystemupdates gibt’s nur noch via App-Store
• Bei dem muss man seine Kreditkarte hinterlegen, auch wenn man nie was kaufen wird
• Das Betriebssystem wird nicht mehr auf CD ausgeliefert
• Keine Schachtel mehr, die ich stolz ins Regal stellen kann (Jaa, ich bin war so ein Apple-Jünger!)
• Das neue Macbook Pro hat aufgelöteten RAM, eingeklebte Akkus und ein SSD mit proprietärer Schnittstelle
• Jedes neue Modell hat einen neuen Stromstecker
• Die neuen Macbooks haben keinen Ethernet-Anschluss. Dazu bräuchte man einen Adapter
• Ein DVD-Laufwerk fehlt
• Die Benutzeroberfläche ist uneinheitlich. Das ist nicht mehr aus einem Guss!
• Facebook ist im OS integriert

Weisst du was, Apple? FUCK OFF.

Es mag sein, dass alles ein perfekt aufeinander abgestimmtes Ökosystem ist, das in sich wunderbar funktioniert. Aber ich bin dem komplett ausgeliefert und unterworfen. Das passt mir nicht!

Ich wechsle auf freie Software; nicht nur serverseitig, sondern jetzt auch clientseitig. Ich verzichte auf all den Komfort, die schönen Schriftarten und tolle Typographie und die (paar wenigen) gutaussehenden Programme. Natürlich ist es aufwändig, sich sein eigenes System zusammenzustellen, bis alles so funktioniert wie man möchte. Aber DAS ist dann mein System, wo keine Firma einen Furz ablässt und ich es einatmen muss. Ich kann es nach belieben anpassen und verändern. Die Farben, das Aussehen, alles. Oder es so lassen, wie es ist, und es bleibt so.

Ich habe mich aus den Klauen von Betriebssystemherstellerfirmen befreit.

Man wechselt nicht zu Linux wegen des Komforts. Sondern aus einer Ideologie. Die Ideologie einer Freiheit; dass jeder Software verwenden kann, die von niemandem kontrolliert wird, sondern von tausenden Menschen um den Planeten freiwillig erstellt wird. Und man selber etwas dazu beitragen kann, wenn man möchte. Das hat was anarchistisches, da ist eine Gemeinschaft dahinter. Wir schreiben unsere eigene Software! Selber machen ist toll.

Dieses Konzept gefällt mir sehr, und hat mich schlussendlich zu diesem Schritt bewogen, und mir die Energie gegeben, die ich für so einen Umstieg brauchte. Bequemlichkeit und Komfort sind eine Falle, welche ohne eine Ideologie viel zu leicht zuschnappt.
