OOMG. ES IST DA!! Nach fast 8 Jahren Entwicklungszeit – Black Mesa Source ist da!

Für die nicht Eingeweihten: Black Mesa Source ist ein kompletter Nachbau von Half-Life 1, und zwar so, dass es die Source-Engine vollständig ausreizt. Und das gratis, erstellt von Freiwilligen in der Freizeit.

Aus alt mach neu:

Ich erinnerte mich noch, als es hiess, dass Half-Life 1 mit der Source Engine läuft. Valve hatte damals aber einfach die bestehenden Texturen und Modelle übernommen, und ausser den Wasseroberflächen fühlte es sich noch komplett wie 1998 an. Ich hatte damals schon ein Black Mesa Source erwartet. Aber es ist klar, dass das viel Arbeit erfordert – sehr viel. Und JETZT IST ES EINFACH SOWEIT 😀 *quieetsch* *frohlock*

Das Warten hat sich gelohnt.

Good morning, and welcome to the Black Mesa Transit System. This automated train is provided for the security and convenience of the Black Mesa Research Facility personnel. The time is: Eight, forty seven, A.M. Current topside temperature is: Ninety three degrees. With an estimated high of: One hundred and five. The Black Mesa compound is maintained at a pleasant sixty-eight degrees at all times. This train is inbound from Level Three dormitories to Sector C Test Labs and Control Facilities.

Der Zug setzt sich langsam in Bewegung. Und während atmosphärische Musik spielt, liest eine weibliche Ansage aus dem Lautsprecher die technischen Daten zur Forschungseinrichtung vor. Ich kann es kaum fassen: Ich spiele noch einmal Half-Life 1, und entdecke nochmals alles neu! Mir kommen fast die Tränen. Das gibts ja gar nicht, so ultimativ endgeil! Noch einmal den Geist von 1999 aufleben lassen, wo ich wie gefesselt vor dem Bildschirm sass, inmitten einer LAN-Party am Computercamp und dieses Spiel im Singleplayer-Modus zum ersten mal erlebte.

Der Wachmann klopft an die Tür. Wissenschaftler bedienen Computer, Maschinen, Forschungseinrichtungen. Jedes Detail ist dem Original nachempfunden. Teilweise sogar verbessert: Da eine Wartezeit geschickt überbrückt, dort eine Szene näher beleuchtet. Bei der Ansage für den radioaktiven Strahlungscheck pocht ein Wissenschaftler verzweifelt an einer Tür, hinter ihm eine grün leuchtende Masse. Solche humorvollen Details würde heute Valve auch einbauen. Und diese Freiwilligen haben es einfach gemacht: Einmal kurz Valve spielen und das Spiel neu bauen – wie es Valve heute bauen würde. Grossartig!

Wir fahren durch die Hochsicherheitsschleuse der ehemaligen Raketenfabrik. Die drei Sicherungsarme verriegeln das Tor wieder hinter uns; sie schliessen sich nacheinander mit einem Zischen und einem unbeschreiblich wirklichkeitsgetreuen Geräusch. Der Sound ist wirklich allererste Sahne! Durchgängig, im ganzen Spiel. Sei es das tiefe, gefährliche hummmmmmmm der Forschungsanstalt innen; das so tönt wie wenn man bei einem Parkhaus in einen Lüftungsschacht in die Ferne lauscht; oder die verschiedenen Generatoren und Lasergeräusche, oder die Geräusche der Maschinen und Roboterarme. Ein James Bond Film klingt nicht besser.

Wir erreichen Sektor C Testlabor. „Morning mister Freeman, looks like you’re running late?“ Originalgetreu werde ich begrüsst. Plus, der Wächter macht noch den einen oder anderen Witz. Nichts wurde weggenommen, aber so vieles hinzugefügt.

Das Gefühl, noch einmal Half-Life 1 zum ersten mal zu spielen. Danke, liebe Entwickler!

Gewisse Charaktere, die in Half-Life 2 eine Hauptrolle spielen, sind hier perfekt integriert. So sind die beiden Wissenschaftler, denen der Computer explodiert kurz vor dem Eingang ins Testlabor; diese beiden sind Eli und Dr. Kleiner, und sie unterhalten sich über die Resonanzkaskade, die eigentlich erst im Teil 2 «erfunden» wurde. Perfekt integriert.

Der Eingang zum Reaktorkomplex. Gleich passiert der Unfall…

Den Rest der Geschichte kennt jeder HL1-Spieler: Das experimentelle Material wird in den Reaktor geschoben, der Reaktor überlastet und öffnet ein Portal in eine andere Dimension, wo jetzt deren Bewohner hindurchtreten und sich mit dieser Welt nicht sonderlich gut anfreunden.

Nach dem Unfall. Rauchwolken steigen auf, ein entferntes Donnern, so wie es schon in HL2 durch Mark und Bein ging, grollt durch die Station. Funken, herunterfallende Teile, Blitze. Entfernte Alarmsirenen. Etwas fürchterliches hat die Station erschüttert. Sogleich fängt dramatische Musik an, diese Stimmung zu unterstreichen.

Auch Details wie Risse in der Wand nach dem Unfall dürfen nicht fehlen.

Joel Nielsen hat sich sieben Jahre lang Zeit genommen und die Essenz des Original Soundtracks aller Half-Life Serien herausgezogen, studiert, und dann ein episches, ultimativ stimmungsvolles Meisterwerk komponiert, und zwar so, dass mir beim Hören fast die Tränen hochkommen. Das steht dem Half-Life 2 Soundtrack in nichts nach.

„After seven years, hundreds of hours and too many song revisions to count, the Black Mesa Soundtrack is finally released. Faced with the impossible task of creating a soundtrack that will pay homage to Half Life 1 and the millions of fans worldwide, I have made production choices that some will most likely question. From a slightly different perspective, I have tried to bring what I feel is the essence of Half Life, to Black Mesa.

I had no prior experience composing soundtracks. Creating the sound effects was a challenge all on its own, but the music was a far greater task than I initially anticipated. Luckily for me, the lengthy development cycle gave me time to learn and experiment with a lot of different ideas.

I wanted to try new musical genres and styles in Black Mesa, while still maintaining a Half Life „feel“. A few song re-makes were attempted, but there is no point in re-making something that is already a classic. I know I risk much composing a soundtrack so different, but I am hoping the community will come to like it almost as much as the original.“
