Ein paar Überlegungen zur Zeit.
Ich synchronisiere meine Uhr mit dem Server der Atomuhr.

Und mir wird klar: Andere tun das auch. Alle synchronisieren mit dieser Uhr. Aber woher weiss die Atomuhr, dass sie „richtig“ tickt?
Diese Atomuhr gibt also die Weltzeit vor. Genauer: Es gibt 260 Atomuhren an über 60 weltweit verteilten Instituten. Und die Atomuhr in Paris gibt den Takt an; sie „stimmt“. Aha…
Die Atomuhr funktioniert so:
In einer Atomuhr werden Caesium-Atome mit Hilfe einer elektromagnetischen Strahlung dazu gebracht, von einem Energieniveau in ein anderes zu wechseln. Dieser Übergang funktioniert bei einer ganz bestimmten Frequenz (Periodendauer) der Strahlung besonders gut. Durch Abzählen der richtigen Zahl von Perioden (siehe Zahl oben) gewinnt man die Sekunde ausgesprochen präzise.
Okay. Der Einfachheit halber: 9’192’631’770 Schwingungen dieses Atoms entsprechen genau einer Sekunde.
Aber wie lange dauerte die Sekunde, bevor man entdeckte, dass 9’192’631’770 Schwingungen dieses Atoms eine Sekunde dauern?
Wer sagt: HAA! DAS ist eine Sekunde! Genau jetzt – *klack* … *klack* – ooch nee, diese Atomuhr geht falsch, eine Sekunde dauert _anders_.
Wo ist diese Referenzsekunde? Und wer kann ohne Atomuhr bestimmen, dass gerade DIESE Atomuhr ungenau tickt? Meine Atomuhr ist genauer. Ja Herrgott – Erkennt ihr den Unterschied zwischen 0.00000000000000001 Sekunden und 0.000000000000000012 Sekunden mit blossem Auge? Und wer sagt denn, dass meine Atomuhr falsch geht – es könnte genau so sein, dass deine Atomuhr falsch geht und meine richtig.
Vor der Erfindung der Atomuhr konnte man die Sekundendauer bestenfalls mit einem Pendel bestimmen. Aber der kann ja willkürlich pendeln; man muss einfach mal sagen: Okay, der Rythmus, das ist eine Sekunde. Es gibt sonst keine Referenzpunkte. Oder?
Man könnte die Drehung der Planeten beobachten und diese grossen Zeitperioden dividieren, um dann eine Sekunde daraus zu errechnen und das dann mit der definierten Atomsekunde vergleichen.
Und was passiert, wenn es wieder mal einen Magnetsturm von der Sonne gibt, die Schwingung des Atoms durcheinandergebracht wird und alle Atomuhren gleichzeitig falsch ticken? Niemand würde was bemerken. Niemand. Keine Abweichung, gar nichts. Es tickt alles ganz genau gleich falsch. Und alle synchronisieren davon.
Die Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) ist durch das Zeitgesetz damit beauftragt, die gesetzliche Zeit zu realisieren. (Quelle)

Die Zeit ist sowas von willkürlich bestimmt und steht auf einem sehr wackeligem Fundament.
