Bitcoin gibt es schon seit 2009. ‘Damals’ hat Satoshi Nakamoto das peer-2-peer-Bezahlsystem ins Leben gerufen. Und die Idee dazu auch noch viel älter. In den letzten Tagen ist das Interesse an Bitcoin sehr stark gestiegen: Jason Calacanis zum Beispiel bezeichnet Bitcoin gestern als das gefährlichste Open-Source-Projekt aller Zeiten.

Aber was ist Bitcoin überhaupt?

Stellen wir uns eine Mischung aus DRM, public-/private-key-Verschlüsselung und einem peer-to-peer-Netzwerk mit verteilter Datenbank vor. Die Münzen dieser elektronischen Währung werden aus digitalen Signaturen generiert – und zwar in einem seeehr langsamen Prozess. Die Gesamtmenge an verfügbaren bitcoins ist per Definition limitiert auf 21Millionen, wobei diese Zahl erst in sehr vielen Jahren erreicht werden wird. Bei Wikipedia findet sich das folgende Rechenbeispiel:

Neue Bitcoins berechnen sich durch die Formel (6 * 50 Bitcoins/Stunde) * (eigene CPU-Geschwindigkeit / Summe der totalen CPU-Geschwindigkeit des Netzwerkes), womit die Generierung von 50 Bitcoins auf einem handelsüblichen Computer ca. 1 Jahr dauern würde. Demnach lohnt sich Generierung im großen Stil nur mit GPUs oder größeren Computernetzwerken, welche allerdings aufgrund des Strompreises (noch) in keinem Verhältnis zum Marktwert der Bitcoins stehen.

Um die Gültigkeit zu prüfen und das doppelte Ausgeben einer Münze zu verhindern, braucht man dann natürlich noch eine Kontrollinstanz. Üblicherweise wird im DRM-Bereich dazu eine zentrale Stelle geschaffen. Bei Bitcoin übernimmt diese Aufgabe ein peer-to-peer-System, das alle Transaktionen erfasst, und dadurch sehr schnell zu komplex wird (bzw. werden soll), um sinnvoll von einem Angreifer manipuliert werden zu können – so soll Falschgeld unmöglich werden.

Gleichzeitig ist das System, das nur auf anonymen Hashes basiert, absolut anonym pseudonym (Siehe Kommentare von Andre) für alle Teilnehmer – so lange sie Bitcoins nicht in echtes Geld tauschen. Hier wird auch die Attraktivität von bitcoins offensichtlich. Gegenüber Diensten wie Paypal bietet Bitcoin

• keine Zensur-, Sperr-, oder Kontrollmöglichkeit
• gebührenfreie weltweite Transaktionen
• vollständige Anonymität (wie Bargeld)
• eine Spekulationsmöglichkeit bzw. Aussicht auf Zinsen: Der Bitcoin-Wechselkurs in “etablierte” Währungen bestimmt sich an Wechselbörsen. Inzwischen ist dort der Wert einer bitcoin von wenigen cent auf 6-8$ gestiegen.

Zusammengefasst verbindet Bitcoin also die Vorteile von Bargeld und Konten/Überweisungen.

Weder Staaten, noch Banken haben natürlich besonders großes Interesse daran, dass ein solches System sich durchsetzt. Entscheidend wird dafür aber sein, dass bitcoins konvertibel werden, bzw. bleiben. Dann wäre eine mangelnde Stabilität auch nicht so entscheidend, da man einfach immer zeitnah wechseln, und bitcoins nur für den Transfer nutzen könnte. Der wichtigste Punkt aber ist, dass bitcoin hält, was das System verspricht – sonst würde die Bezeichnung “gefährlichstes Open-Source-Projekt” eine ganz andere Bedeutung bekommen. (Quelle)
