Island könnte sich durch einen stärkeren Schutz von Rede- und Pressefreiheit zu einer Art Oase für Medien entwickeln, wo Unternehmen produzieren und veröffentlichen, ohne unverhältnismäßig große Teile ihrer Mittel für juristische Auseinandersetzungen beiseitelegen zu müssen.

In den IMMI-Entwurf floss auch die Erfahrung der Wikileaks-Mitarbeiter ein, die bisher in verschiedenen Ländern operieren, um die jeweils günstigsten Gesetze zu nutzen. Man will deshalb die Redefreiheit nach amerikanischem, den Quellenschutz nach schwedischem und andere Teile des Presserechts nach belgischem Vorbild gestalten. Außerdem sollen Whistleblower explizit geschützt, Internet-Provider und andere Informationsübermittler von Haftungsansprüchen ausgenommen und die Informationsfreiheitsansprüche der Bürger gestärkt werden.
