Stuart McKee, der Technikchef von Microsoft USA, gesteht die Niederlage von OOXML als Dokumentenformat öffentlich ein und gibt bekannt, dass das konkurrierende Open Document Format (ODF) in dem Wettkampf der Standards „klar gewonnen“ habe.

Er untermauerte seine Aussage durch das Vorhaben seines Arbeitgebers, ODF in Microsoft Office mit dem Service Pack 2 zu integrieren. Laut McKee hatte Microsoft schon früher geplant, ODF in Office 2007 zu implementieren, dies war jedoch seiner Aussage nach während der Entwicklung des hauseigenen Office-Paketes nicht möglich.

Trotz der Niederlage von OOXML will Microsoft weiterhin an seinem Format festhalten, jedoch parallel an ODF mitwirken. Microsofts hauseigene Format wurde im Fast-Track-Verfahren Anfang 2008 akzeptiert. Mittlerweile liegt der Standardisierungsprozess aufgrund von Unstimmigkeiten und Beschwerden von vier ISO-Mitgliedsländern auf Eis.

Microsofts Eingeständnisse riefen aber auch Skeptiker auf den Plan. Sie befürchten einen weiteren Schachzug in die Richtung „Embrace, extend and extinguish“ (zu deutsch etwa: annehmen, erweitern und auslöschen). Demnach könnte Microsoft vorhaben, ODF mit proprietären Inhalten zu erweitern um es konkurrierenden Anbietern von Software unmöglich zu machen, alle Inhalte des Formates korrekt auszulesen und somit Interoperabilitätsprobleme hervorzurufen. Diese Strategie war für Microsoft zumindest in der Vergangenheit von Erfolg gekrönt, bestes Beispiel ist die Implementierung der ActiveX-Schnittstelle im Internet Explorer, welche u.a. dazu geführt hat, Netscape zu verdrängen und den Browsermarkt zu verzerren. Nachwirkungen dieser Strategie sind noch bis heute spürbar.

Das konkurrierende OpenDocument-Format, welches auch in OpenOffice.org verwendet wird, ist bereits seit 2006 ein anerkannter ISO-Standard und wird weltweit sowohl von Firmen, Behörden als auch Privatleuten eingesetzt.
