Der Chumby ist ein ein kleiner PC mit einem Touchscreendisplay, auf dem unterschiedliche kleine Programme (Widgets) laufen.
Allerdings soll er nicht als PC wahrgenommen werden, sondern eher in die Kategorie Wecker/Uhr fallen. Der Chumby soll ein alltäglicher Gegenstand werden, der für uns den dauernden Kontakt zur Onlinewelt aufrechterhält. Da der Chumby voll hackbar ist, kann jeder die für die Internetseiten Widgets programmieren, die er benötigt. Natürlich sind schon vorgefertigte Widgets enthalten, zum Beispiel ein flickr-Widget oder ein Google News-Widget.
Die Wiedergabe von Musik soll zur Einführung des Chumby Mitte 2007 auch möglich sein. Die Internetanbindung funktioniert über WLAN mit WPA2,WPA oder WEP und dadurch kann der Chumby überall im Haus aufgestellt und genutzt werden.Hier die technischen Daten:

Das besste an diesem Gerät, ist wohl das er voll Hackbar ist. Die Firma gibt zusätzlich noch alle Baupläne von der Elektronik, bis zum Gehäuse mit, damit man auch weitere Geräte an den Chumby anhängen/einbauen kann.

Die einzige Regel lautet, dass alle Änderungen an der Software publiziert werden müssen.

Der Chumby befindet sich noch in der beta Phase, soll aber vorausichtlich noch in diesem Quartal in den USA erscheinen.

Anschafungspreis ungefähr $ 150.-

Leider wird der Chumby nur an US Haushalte geliefert. Wer also niemand in den USA kennt, muss wohl oder übel warten bis er hier im Handel erscheint, oder möglicherweise lässt sich auch einer über Ebay ersteigern.

„ABU-Unterricht, Themenkreis Bevölkerungsschutz“ – das umschreibt diesen Kurs momentan am besten. Wir sitzen den ganzen Tag im Theorieraum und machen Gruppen- und Einzelarbeiten auf Flipcharts, Hellraumprojektorfolien, Wandtafeln – man fühlt sich so richtig in die Harry’schen Zeiten zurückversetzt.
