Wie jedes Jahr hat das Online-Magazin DesktopLinux.com eine Umfrage unter Linux-Nutzern durchgeführt. Diese gibt Auskunft darüber, welche Distribution die beliebteste ist und ob Linux-Nutzer auf Windows-Anwendungen verzichten können.

Insgesamt nahmen 14.535 Linux-Nutzer an der Umfrage teil. Zwar bittet das Online-Magazin alle Teilnehmer, auch Freunde und Mitarbeiter auf die Umfrage aufmerksam zu machen, um nicht nur Experten dabei zu haben, dennoch kann die Umfrage sicher nicht als repräsentativ gewertet werden. Der erste Teil der Ergebnisse gibt nun beispielsweise Auskunft über die beliebteste Linux-Distribution, die – wenig überraschend – Ubuntu heißt und von fast 30 Prozent der Teilnehmer eingesetzt wird.

Ein Vergleich mit den Statistiken der Webseite hätte gezeigt, dass der richtige Gewinner das klassische Ubuntu mit GNOME-Desktop ist, so die Betreiber. Kubuntu mit KDE kommt erst danach. Mit 12,2 Prozent folgt darauf Debian GNU/Linux, während OpenSuse mit rund 10 Prozent auf Platz drei kommt. Gentoo folgt mit knapp unter 10 Prozent, Fedora Core kommt mit 7 Prozent noch auf Platz fünf.

Bei den Desktop-Oberflächen führt KDE mit 37,7 Prozent, knapp dahinter liegt GNOME mit 35,1 Prozent. Xfce erreicht knapp 10 Prozent und kommt damit auf Platz drei, während die einfacheren Umgebungen wie Enlightenment, Fluxbox und IceWM alle um die 4 Prozent liegen.

Mit fast 60 Prozent entscheidet der Mozilla Firefox den Wettkampf der Webbrowser klar für sich. Dahinter folgen der Konqueror und Opera auf den Plätzen zwei und drei. Bei den E-Mail-Clients führt mit Thunderbird auch ein Mozilla-Produkt mit 36,4 Prozent. Evolution liegt mit 18,8 Prozent deutlich dahinter, KMail aus KDE schafft es mit 16,3 Prozent immerhin noch auf den dritten Platz.

Fast 40 Prozent der Teilnehmer gaben zwar an, dass sie keine Windows-Anwendungen unter Linux nutzen, immerhin 33,5 Prozent hingegen setzen aber Wine ein, um auch weiter nicht auf Windows-Programme verzichten zu müssen. Mit knapp 17 Prozent liegt VMware auf dem zweiten Platz, die kommerzielle Wine-Variante CrossOver Office kommt auf Platz drei.
