Freifunk ist eine nicht kommerzielle, für jeden offene Initiative zur Förderung freier (Funk-)Netze. olsr.freifunk.net ist das vermaschte Netzwerk-Experiment der Freifunker in Berlin. Ziel ist es ein freies Funknetz in der Stadt aufzubauen. Wie der Name sagt ist es noch ein Experiment, doch bei diesem Experiment machen immer mehr mit. Im Durchschnitt 300 Routerknoten und schätzungsweise 1000-1500 Computer nehmen bereits am Freifunk-OLSR-Netz in Berlin teil. Doch auch in anderen Regionen bekommen freie Netze immer größeren Zulauf. Die freifunk-Community ist in den letzten Jahren rasant gewachsen und mittlerweile eine internationale Gemeinschaft. Freifunk-Initiativen existieren in zahlreichen Städten, Gemeinden und Dörfern.
GEIL! So eine Idee geisterte doch schon immer in meinem Kopf herum. Ein Mini-Netz a la Arpanet, aber über WLAN, von Hausdach zu Hausdach. Und es gibt doch tatsächlich Leute, die sowas schon am Laufen haben – *sichnerv* – warum bin ich erst jetzt daraufgestossen?

Damals witzelten wir darüber, den Link bis nach Basel weiterzuziehen – heute muss ich sagen: gar nicht so unrealistisch!
Die technischen Komponenten sind verfügbar:
– Ein Linux-WLAN-Router, Linksys WRT54GL
– Hausgemachte Firmware mit dem OLSR Routing-Protokoll
– Antennen.
Es ist klar, dass sich unser Netz mit Accesspoints, die man im Laden kaufen kann, schlecht skaliert (erweitern lässt). WLAN ist nicht für so grosse Netzwerke konzipiert, somit wäre es irgendwann mal im eigenen Traffic erstickt. Aber jetzt mit der Linux-Firmware ist das plötzlich machbar!
Die Wurzeln des Projekts „Freifunk“ kommen von Berlin. Und das schon seit geraumer Zeit…
Auch Bern hat ein solches Freifunk-Netzwerk. Jetzt fehlt noch Basel und Umgebung…

ich sag numme eins: Crakkware-IT ischd big sponsering! Ich red am Mentig mitm Lagercheffe vo dr FHNW, de hett doette no e Palettli voller HP Kayak Visualize mit Dualcpumainboards, und no e Schränkli voller Rambus Kistene, natürlich au HP Kayak lol. Klingt villicht nid so sonderlich, aber die Dinger sinn extrem great, numme bizzli lutt 😉
