So eine Schüssel müsste man haben: Mit einer ausrangierten Satellitenschüssel überbrückten die zwei Jungs eine Strecke von 279 Kilometer.

Nach rund 90 und 200 Kilometern haben nun zwei venezolanische Teams die Rekordmarke bei der WLAN-Ausdehnung auf 279 km getrieben. Dabei kamen ausgemusterte Antennen von Satellitenbodenstationen von rund 2,7 m Durchmesser sowie gewöhnliche WLAN-Router WRT54G zum Einsatz. Ein schwedisches Team überbrückte zwar auch schon 310 km, setzte dazu aber einen Stratosphärenballon und Verstärker ein.

Die Venezolaner errichteten eine Station auf einer Kliffkante des Bergs El Águila in 4100 m über Normalnull, die andere auf einem lediglich 125 m hohen Hügel in der Ebene bei El Baúl. Bevor die als Access Point und Client mit Open-Source-Firmware konfigurierten Router zum Einsatz kamen, richteten die Teams die Antennen mit einem Signalgenerator und Spektrumanalyzer auf bestmöglichen Empfang aus. Anschließend konnte der Client in El Baúl zwar schon die Beacon-Signale des AP auf dem El Águila aufnehmen, aber Daten gingen erst nach einem Eingriff in der Firmware durch. Denn die reine Funklaufzeit für Hin- und Rückweg kam mit 1,8 Millisekunden schon in die Nähe dessen, was ein schneller Ping innerhalb einer Wohnung braucht.

Klares Wetter und eine freie Fresnel-Zone sind für solche Rekorde Voraussetzung. Eine entspannte Einstellung zu Regulierungen hilft auch. Denn mit dem geschätzten Antennengewinn von 30 dBi und der auf 100 Milliwatt hochgestellten Ausgangsleistung des Routers kommt eine effektive isotrope Strahlungsleistung (EIRP) von rund 100 Watt zusammen, gut das Tausendfache des hierzulande erlaubten.

Aber moment mal: 100 Milliwatt + 30 dBi = 100 Watt??! Dann hätte meine Antenne ja eine ebenbürtige Leistung. Oder was gibt 20 dBi + 150 Milliwatt? 😯
