Der Schweizer Bundesrat hat grünes Licht für die Einführung von biometrischen Pässen gegeben. Ab September 2006 sollen die ersten Pässe vom Typ „Pass 06“ im Rahmen eines Pilotversuches ausgegeben werden. Das 250 Franken (etwa 160 Euro) teure Dokument gilt zunächst nur für fünf Jahre, weil nicht klar ist, wie lange der eingebaute Chip hält. Er enthält ein digitales Passbild als biometrisches Merkmal sowie alle Informationen seines bereits maschinenlesbaren Vorläufers „Pass 03“. Fingerabdrücke sollen erst später erfasst werden.

Ein Sprecher des Bundesamtes für Polizei erklärte, dass man damit rechne, pro Jahr rund 100.000 Pässe vom Typ 06 auszustellen. Unklar ist, für wen sich ein „Pass 06“ lohnt. Da man weiterhin den zehn Jahre gültigen „Pass 03“ beantragen kann und dafür nur 120 Franken zahlt, rät der Bundesrat, den „Pass 06“ nur zu beantragen, wenn man ihn wirklich braucht. Wer vor hat in die USA zu reisen, sollte sich seinen „Pass 03“ vor dem 26. Oktober 2006 ausstellen lassen. Denn damit darf man noch ohne Visum in die USA einreisen. Alle Staaten des Schengener Abkommens, wollen den „Pass 03“ weiterhin akzeptieren.
