The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence at Home – Die Suche nach außerirdischer Intelligenz Zuhause. Ein Forschungsprojekt, in dem es darum geht, den ganzen Himmel nach Strahlen abzuscannen, die evtl. auf ausserirdische Kommunikation hindeuten können. Nur sind diese Berechnungen nicht ganz so leicht zu bewältigen, somit hat man das Projekt SETI@home ins Leben gerufen.

SETI@home ist ein Beispiel für Grid Computing. Jeder, der einen PC und einen Internet-Anschluss hat, kann zuhause zu diesem Projekt beitragen, indem er ein frei erhältliches Programm installiert, welches Daten eines Radioteleskops herunterlädt und analysiert. Das Programm läuft entweder als Bildschirmschoner oder komplett im Hintergrund als Daemon. In beiden Fällen wird nur Rechnerleistung genutzt, die andernfalls ungenutzt geblieben wäre. Und wenn das genug Benutzer sind, die dazu beitragen, kommt eine ordentliche Rechenleistung zustande.

Allerdings: Wer garantiert mir, dass das Programm auch wirklich Radioteleskop-Berechnungen macht? Der Programmcode ist nicht offen. Möglicherweise könnten Regierungen und Geheimdienste eine solch gigantische Rechenleistung zum knacken von Passwörtern und ähnlichem missbrauchen.

Aber zurück zum Thema: Mittlerweile existiert „BOINC“ – Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing – eine vollständige Plattform für verteiltes Rechnen, die nun nicht mehr auf SETI beschränkt ist, sondern auch andere Projekte rechnen lässt.
Und da die SETI Gruppe mittlerweile vollständig auf BOINC umgestiegen ist, wird der alte SETI@home-Client am 15. Dezember abgeschaltet.
