Der erste Release der neusten Konsolen Generation kommt von Microsoft. Sony (PS3) und Nintendo (Revolution) kommen erst Anfang 2006. Beschreibung:

CPU: Die Xbox 360-Plattform wird von gleich drei 3,2GHz CPUs angetrieben, welche auf IBMs PowerPC Architektur basieren. Gemeinsam kommen sie auf eine Leistung von einem Teraflops. Sie übernehmen u.a. auch die Funktion eines Sound-Chips, auf welchen bei Xbox 360 verzichtet wurde.

GPU: Wie nicht anders zu erwarten, stellt ATI den Grafikchip. 500 MHz schnell wird eine auf Xbox 360 angepasste Vorabversion der X800 Nachfolger-Generation zum Einsatz kommen. Natürlich werden die Shader 3.0 Modelle unterstützt, was für eindrückliche Effekte sorgen wird.

Hauptspeicher: Xbox 360 stehen insgesamt 512 MB RAM zur Verfügung – klingt nicht nach viel im Vergleich zum Heim-PC – entspricht aber dem 8x der aktuellen Xbox.

Speicher: Eine 20GB-Festplatte wird für Xbox 360 optional erhältlich sein. Falls vorhanden, werden 2GB der Platte als Cache für Xenon-Spiele verwendet. Zum Speichern werden ansonsten Memory Cards in den Größen 64MB bis 1GB verwendet – wovon 8MB vom System beansprucht werden.

Kamera: Die wohl größte Überraschung: Xbox 360 wird mit einer externen 1,2 Megapixel Kamera daher kommen, mit welcher ihr Photos für eure Spieler-Profile machen könnt oder aber Videochats abhalten könnt.

Medium: Als Medium setzt man ein weiteres Mal auf die DVD – ein 12faches DVD-Laufwerk soll die Duallayer DVD-9 lesen, welche damit jeweils 7GB Daten beherbergen können.

Weiteres zur Grafik und Sound:

720p: Als Basis für Xbox 360-Spiele soll eine Auflösung von 720p (1280×720 – 16:9) zum Einsatz kommen. Eine deutliche Steigerung gegenüber der aktuellen Xbox Plattform, wo 480i die Basis bildet. P steht für Progressive – d.h. es werden Vollbilder geliefert, nicht bloß Halbbilder, wie wir sie vom europäischen TV kennen.
Alle Xbox 360-Spiele unterstützen 16:9, 720p und 1080i.

5.1: Auch die Ohren sollen in Zukunft verwöhnt werden – alle
Xbox 360 Titel werden eure 5.1 Dolby Digital Anlage zum Wanken bringen.

Anti-Aliasing: Kantenflimmern ade? Wir bleiben skeptisch – aber Xbox 360 Titel sollen in Zukunft allesamt mit aktivierter Kantenglättung laufen.

Xbox Live 360

War Live auf der Xbox noch optional, wird es bei Xbox 360 nun Teil des Systems. Das bedeutet nicht nur, dass der kostenpflichtige Einstieg ins Online Gaming nun noch einfacher wird. Denn Xbox Live ist in Zukunft in zwei Optionen verfügbar, „Gold“ und „Silber“. Und das beste daran: Xbox Live „Silber“ ist kostenlos!
Musstet ihr bisher Abonnent sein, um mit Xbox online spielen zu können, kann dies nun zumindest am Wochenende jeder. Außerdem sind zahlreiche Funktionen wie Downloads oder Gamertags nun nicht mehr an das Abonnement gebunden sondern, wie erwähnt, Teil eures Xbox 360-Profils. Wer richtig in die Welt des Online Gamings eintauchen will, kann allerdings mit dem kostenpflichtigen „Gold“-Paket weitere Optionen freischalten.
