Apple und Intel

Vor langer Zeit hiess es mal auf den Softwareverpackungen: „benötigt einen IBM-kompatiblen PC“. Schön. Heute kommt der PowerPC, der die Apple-Rechner antreibt, von IBM. Nun aber nix mehr IBM-kompatibel!

Heute gehe ich in den Laden und lese auf den Verpackungen: „benötigt einen Intel-kompatiblen PC“. Aha.

Und jetzt das:

„It’s true! We are switching to Intel.“

Ich komm da langsam nicht mehr draus. Apple hat immer wieder Benchmarks wie diese hier veröffentlicht:

Sogar ein Werbespot, bei dem sich Apple bei Intel „entschuldigt“, dass der PowerPC halt zweimal so schnell wie ein Intel ist.

Und doch: Als Steve Jobs Mac OS X auf einem Intel-Rechner vorführte, schien alles plötzlich viel schneller zu laufen. Wie über Nacht ist nun Intel plötzlich besser als IBM.

Schade. Denn eigentlich mag ich den G4/G5. Diese Prozessoren wurden mit viel Liebe jahrelang entwickelt, es wurde gefeilt und optimiert mit hübschen Extras und Features wie z.B. die Velocity-Engine.

Und jetzt heissts wieder back to Intel. Back to the roots. Warum das so ist, ist – wenn man die Benchmarks anschaut – schwer zu verstehen. Steve wird’s schon wissen – hoffentlich!
