Ein Kurzschluss an der SBB-Übertragungsleitung von Amsteg nach Rotkreuz war am Mittwoch um 17.08 Uhr Auslöser eines knapp vierstündigen Unterbruchs der Energieversorgung auf dem Netz der Schweizer Normalspurbahnen (SBB, BLS, RM, SOB und TPF). Die zur ausgefallenen Leitung parallel verlaufende Gemeinschaftsleitung SBB/EWA/CKW, welche den Energietransport aus den SBB-Kraftwerkanlagen in Amsteg, Göschenen und Ritom Richtung Norden sicherstellen, waren zum Zeitpunkt des Kurzschlusses wegen Bauarbeiten direkt unter der Leitung ausgeschaltet. Da die Kraftwerke am Gotthard nach dem Kurzschluss nur noch das Tessin mit Energie versorgen konnten, traten im Stromnetz der Bahn im Süden wegen Überlastung Schutzabschaltungen auf. Dies führte zum automatischen Abschalten der Kraftwerke Göschenen und Ritom sowie des Umformerwerks Giubiasco. Wegen der fehlenden Leistung der Urner und Tessiner Kraftwerke kam es in den folgenden Minuten zunehmend zu Energieversorgungsengpässen auf dem übrigen Schweizer Bahnnetz. Die unstabile Versorgungslage führte um 17.47 Uhr zu einem kompletten Zusammenbruch der Stromversorgung für die Schweizer Bahnen, wie Hansjörg Hess, Leiter Infrastruktur SBB, am Donnerstagmorgen in Bern an einer Medienkonferenz bekannt gab.
