Meldung vom 22.04.2005 Es scheint noch Wunder zu geben: Das Redmonder Softwarehaus wird mit dem Service Pack 1 für Virtual Server 2005 nicht nur die eigenen Betriebssysteme, sondern auch Linux unterstützen. Microsoft-Chef Steve Ballmer hat sich an einem Manager-Gipfel in Las Vegas zum kommenden Service Pack 1 für Virtual Server 2005 geäussert. Die Software ermöglicht es, auf einer Windows-Server-2003-Plattform mehrere Betriebssysteme laufen zu lassen. Microsoft hat die Virtualisierungstechnologie 2003 von der Firma Connectix aufgekauft. Damals unterstützte die Software Linux als Gastsystem. Nach dem Kauf entfernte Microsoft die Unterstützung aber kurzerhand. Jetzt muss der Softwarekonzern, vermutlich auf Kundenwunsch, klein beigeben. Laut BetaNews.com sagte Steve Ballmer an dem Manager-Gipfel, dass Virtual Server 2005 mit dem Service Pack 1 auch andere Systeme unterstützen werde: «Wir wissen, dass die Leute Windows-, Linux- und andere Systeme auf Virtual Server und Windows verwenden wollen. Sie werden diese Unterstützung später in diesem Jahr erhalten».
