I grew up playing chess. It taught me a lot of great lessons about competition — and a lot of wrong lessons about life.

From the age of seven, I played chess constantly and competitively. I played in school, online, at national competitions. Chess taught me patience, perseverance, critical thinking — crucial skills for tackling life’s hard problems and difficult situations.

Chess wired me to think causally at a young age. Move your knight here; you’ll trap his bishop. Capture that pawn; you’ll weaken his right side. Every correct move led me closer to a checkmate; every false step brought me closer to defeat.

Chess also introduced the idea of the “other”. Black versus white. Our school versus theirs. And every game was zero sum — there was only ever one point to score, either to be shared or taken in its entirety. No way to grow the pie.

Marc Laidlaw, Autor aller bisherigen Half-Life-Teile und seit 19 Jahren bei Valve beschäftigt, hat das Unternehmen verlassen.

Nach all den Jahren sei er schlichtweg zu alt für das chaotische Business der Spiele-Entwicklung. In einer E-Mail-Konversation mit einem Fan, die dieser prompt auf Reddit veröffentlichte, schreibt Laidlaw: „Als ich 1997 bei Valve anfing, war mein Spitzname ‚Old Man Laidlaw‘. […] Stellt euch vor, wieviel älter ich jetzt bin! Ich hatte einen guten Lauf, aber in letzter Zeit fühlte ich das Bedürfnis nach einer Pause vom kollaborativen Chaos der Spiele-Entwicklung und nach einer Rückkehr zu mehr selbstbestimmten Schreibprojekten.

„Was bedeutet das für Half-Life?“, fragt Laidlaw in seiner E-Mail, und beantwortet die Frage gleich selbst: „Ich weiß es nicht. Valve besitzt alle Rechte an Half-Life. Half-Life gab es schon, bevor ich bei Valve auftauchte. Die Richtung, die Valve in Zukunft einschlagen möchte, liegt nicht in meinen Händen. Ich war ein dankbarer Mit-Schöpfer, aber meine Zeit, in der ich an der Serie gearbeitet habe, liegt hinter mir.“ Da er nicht länger für Valve spreche, könne er keinerlei Auskunft zur Zukunft von Half-Life geben. Die Gründe für seine Kündigung seien gänzlich persönlicher Natur, so Laidlaw. Valve sei für mehr als 18 Jahre die Heimat seiner Träume und Ambitionen gewesen, und er werde der Firma, den dort gefundenen Freunden und den dort erschaffenen Charakteren immer verbunden sein.

Fnord ist ein Kunstwort, das vor allem durch die Illuminatus-Trilogie von Robert Anton Wilson und Robert Shea sowie die Principia Discordia bekannt wurde. Es steht sinnbildlich für Konditionierung durch gezieltes Einspielen von Information und Desinformation (vgl. auch Kommunikationsguerilla) und die sich daraus ergebenden Manipulationsmöglichkeiten, vor allem für die Massenmedien und den Staat. Die Vokabel ist nicht nur zum Code unter Diskordiern und Illuminatus-Lesern geworden, sondern wird darüber hinaus auch im realen Leben als Synonym für Desinformationen verwendet, so zum Beispiel als Name für eine Webserver-Software oder als metasyntaktische Variable.

Am Ende hatte dann noch jemand einen coolen fernsteuerbaren Hai dabei und ließ ihn fliegen, das sah man auf dem Stream wohl leider nicht mehr. Der wurde dann von der barbarischen Belüftungsanlage des Hauses in einen Strudel des Verderbens gezogen und hängt jetzt irgendwo in den Eingeweiden eines Ansaugstutzens der Belüftungsanlage.

Am nächsten Morgen führt ein kleiner Junge den Hai im Treppenhaus spazieren. „Darf ich mal?“ Es ist ein Aluminium-Ballon, an dessen hinteren Ende eine Schwanzflosse montiert wurde, steuerbar mit einem Servomotor. Am Rumpf befindet sich ein Gewicht an einer Schiene, das man vor- und zurückfahren lassen kann. „Schwimm zu dieser Säule, das ist jetzt dein Ziel.“ ermuntert mich der Junge. Ich positioniere das Gewicht mit dem linken Knopf der Fernsteuerung nach hinten, und drücke abwechslungsweise links-rechts-links-rechts mit dem anderen Knopf. Der Hai schwänzelt lebensecht und schwimmt hoch in Richtung Säule. Wenn ich die Abstände auf der einen Seite verlängere, also länger Links als Rechts drücke, lassen sich Kurven fliegen. Äääh Schwimmen. Es fühlt sich an, als befänden wir uns in einem riesigen Aquarium. Leider zickt der Empfang ab 10 Metern, das war wohl auch der Grund, weshalb der Hai beim Fnord Jahresrückblick sich nicht mehr kontrollieren liess. Aber die Idee ist super! Ich will auch so ein Teil, für nächstes Jahr. Mit einem starkem Sender und Empfänger.
