Was macht wirklichen Schulerfolg aus? Gilt der Grundsatz «Übung macht den Meister»? Oder ist es die Intelligenz, die darüber entscheidet, ob das Lernen gelingt oder nicht? In Pratteln wurde am 1. August 2018 am Gallenweg 8 eine Tagesschule eröffnet, die beim Lernen neue Wege geht.

Ausgangspunkt für das Schulprojekt war eine Entdeckung. Denis Marcel Bitterli, Initiant und Schulleiter der ­Privatschule, führte als Volksschullehrer in seinem Klassenzimmer vor 25 Jahren ein neues Fach ein: Die Lernwerkstatt. In dieser wurde statt Vokabeln zu büffeln oder viele ­Arbeitsblätter auszufüllen an eigenen Lernprojekten gearbeitet. Es entstanden Filme, Marionetten, Baumhäuser, Instrumente oder Anlagen für Modelleisenbahnen. ­Zugleich wurde mit der fachlichen Arbeit herausgearbeitet, welche Bedeutung das Werk für die ­persönliche Entwicklung und das Arbeitsverhalten haben könnte. ­Themen wie Abgrenzung, Konkurrenz oder Angst wurden besprochen. Obwohl die Mädchen und Knaben ­dadurch weniger Deutsch- und Mathematikunterricht hatten, liess sich bereits nach wenigen Wochen mit Erstaunen feststellen, dass sich die Leistungen der Schüler markant verbesserten. Sowohl in der Fach-, wie auch in der ­Sozial- und Selbstkompetenz waren deutliche Fortschritte ­erkennbar. Warum?

Die Erfahrungen aus dem Klassen­zimmer liessen den ­Bildungsfachmann aufhorchen. Bauen wir unsere Schulen auf überholten pädagogischen Grundsätzen auf? Müssten wir nicht eine ­Neugewichtung vornehmen und vermehrt auf der Förderung von Selbst- und Sozialkompetenz auf ­bauen? Zusammen mit Kollegen stellte er sich den pädagogischen Fragen. Gemeinsam begannen sie, das Unterrichten zu überdenken und auf den Kopf zu stellen. Ein Konzept entstand, welches Bildung und ­Schule auf das Wesentliche – auf die Entwicklung von Beziehungs­fähigkeit – ausrichtet. Es entstand die Prima Bildung.

Es gibt keine Einheitsklassen sondern altersdurchmischte Lerngruppen. Neben Kindern und Jugendlichen, welche die obligatorische Schulzeit zurücklegen, kommen auch Eltern und Erwachsene in den Genuss von Bildungsangeboten. Für die Schüler gibt es keine Hausaufgaben und keine Prüfungen, sondern Kompetenznachweise. Anstatt mit Noten werden die Leistungen mit einem Portfolio aus gewiesen. Stundenplan und Lern­inhalte legen die Schüler gemeinsam mit den Lernbegleitern fest. Man kann in den Ferien zur Schule gehen. Die Schule findet nicht nur im Schulhaus, welches übrigens alles andere wie ein klassisches Schulhaus aussieht – sondern auch in Lernateliers an anderen Orten statt. Auch ausserschulische Lernangebote, die in Vereinen und in der Freizeit besucht werden, sind ein Bestandteil der Bildung.

What the educators apparently haven’t realized yet is that experiential education is a double-edged sword. If you do something to learn it, then what you do, you learn. All the time you are in school, you learn through experience how to live in a dictatorship. In school you shut your notebook when the bell rings. You do not speak unless granted permission. You are guilty until proven innocent, and who will prove you innocent? You are told what to do, think, and say for six hours each day. If your teacher says sit up and pay attention, you had better stiffen your spine and try to get Bobby or Sally or the idea of Spring or the play you’re writing off of your mind. The most constant and thorough thing students in school experience — and learn — is the antithesis of democracy.

Ein guter Anfang -- sowas hätte ich mir damals gewünscht, zu meiner Schulzeit. Allerdings ist das immer noch viel zu wenig; und dass die Lernprogrammierumgebung Geräusche von sich gibt, wenn man etwas kompiliert oder Knöpfe drückt, ist ein weiteres Beispiel davon, dass Kinder von Erwachsenen nicht wirklich ernst genommen werden. Mir ging die kindische Aufmachung mit Bären und Robotern schon als Kind auf den Sack, und warum muss etwas lustig piepsen und sich animieren, obwohl es sonst keinen Zweck erfüllt? Weil die Erwachsenen meinen, etwas sei nur kindergerecht, wenn es so verniedlicht wird? Ich bitte euch. Eine weitere künstliche Grenze, die nicht sein müsste. Man kann etwas auch in kleinen Schritten lernen, ob als Kind oder Erwachsener. Bei Minecraft jubeln schliesslich auch keine Roboter und Barbies, wenn man zum ersten mal erfolgreich etwas automatisiert hat, und Minecraft spielen die Kinder gern. Zurecht hat jemand am Ende diese Verniedlichung in Frage gestellt, begleitet von zustimmendem Applaus.

Und dann diese Annahme -- „können die Kleinen das?“ UND OB. Was soll diese Frage?!? Aber natürlich können die das! Wenn man ihnen nur die Möglichkeit gibt. Woher kommt diese Annahme, dass Kinder etwas noch nicht können sollen oder sich nicht dafür interessieren würden? Erwachsene und ihre Kinderfilterblasenfantasiewelt. Die Ergebnisse des Bildungsexperiments überraschen mich nicht im geringsten: Kinder können programmieren und löten und sich dafür begeistern.

• This section is a brief summary of the information JTG talks about, since the following sections build upon them.
• The first known public schools were created by the pre-Sumerian peoples to create more time & general efficiency for adults so that they could partake in a larger society without overworking or becoming worn out. This extra time & new interconnected social system allowed for more successful engineering, weapon construction & war waging.
• The compulsory school system has largely evolved from ideas to build a society that were first articulated 2400 years ago in „Plato’s Republic“.
• Plato’s Republic reasons that to make a society work best, peoples family and community links need to be broken so that society becomes their family and their community.
• Furthermore, it reasons that people need to specialise even in certain undesirable professions that are necessary for a society to work.
• These basic concepts were finally implemented in such a way that they actually worked by the Prussian monarchy, and adopted in the US in the 1850’s.
• The way that the concepts are currently implemented are as follows:
  • Make school compulsory. This has the effect of demonstrating to the child and the parents that the state is a more powerful influence in the child’s life than the parent.
  • Divide children by age and ability so that no lasting friendships form.
  • Occupy the child’s time with boring things with little meaning for the first few years so that the child doesn’t develop an interest in learning, or loses whatever interest they have. Above all, make the easy look hard.
  • Make it difficult for children to question authority. Make them raise hands to ask a question. All decisions are final.
  • Make children compete amongst themselves for marks and for the teachers favour.
  • Since the children with the highest marks have a demonstrated ability to do as they are told, they are permitted to advance into higher learning.
  • The people that higher learning churns out are indoctrinated into professions that have their own checks and balances to make sure that practitioners don’t stray too far out of government control.
• The desired and produced effect of this is that the school system churns out children who are workforce, citizenship and consumer ready, not because they know how to work, but because they are predictable, willing to obey orders, loathe to question and don’t have the life skills to escape the situation.

Children are a potential threat to society; firstly their free, ungovernable and creative initiative, and secondly their sensitive, mysterious and alarmingly direct experience. The task of neutralising these cardinal threats begins with the parent or carer (see brainwashing) before being taken up by the teacher.

The first thing for a parent or teacher to do is to put their children in a school—a mediated environment separate from community, culture, context, society and nature. This simple act of separation is enough to foster confusion, stifle enthusiasm, warp relations between children and make learning a curiously unreal experience. Man fragt sich ja immer, was die vielen Quotenfrauen in der Informatik eigentlich sollen, die da von der Politik auch ohne jede Sachkunde reingedrückt werden. So viele Informatikstudenten haben mir schon von welchen erzählt, die Informatikprofessorin sind, aber nicht mal wissen, was Informatik ist, und darunter das blindwütige Einsammeln und Aufschreiben von „Informationen” verstehen. Andere erzählten mir von Lehrstühlen, die alle Vorlesungen des Curriculums anbieten, dabei aber immer dasselbe erzählen: Soziogefasel und wie man Frauen zu respektieren hat. Die Altersmischung in einer Sudbury-Schule fördert auf natürliche Weise die Fähigkeit der Kinder, zu denken und Probleme zu lösen, und bietet eine breit gefächerte Informationsquelle.
Die Altersmischung ermöglicht den freien Fluss des Zusammenspiels zwischen Menschen, die sich an unterschiedlichen Punkten ihres Reifungsprozesses befinden. Schüler eignen sich beim Beobachten anderer Lebensmodelle zahlreiche Mechanismen des Modellbauens an, die sie zu ihrem Vorteil nutzen können. Neue Lernanreize und Lernmotivationen bieten die Möglichkeit, eine Menge sehr überraschender und unvorhersehbarer Schritte zu machen. Dabei profitieren Kinder und Jugendliche verschiedenen Alters gleichermaßen voneinander.
Schüler lernen durch Nachahmen, Lehren, Erklären, Zeigen und durch Beobachtung. Die Altersmischung entspricht der gesunden menschlichen Motivation, von jeder verfügbaren Quelle zu lernen.
In einer Bildungsumgebung, in der jeder selbst bestimmt, womit er seine Zeit verbringt, ist es förderlich, dass Menschen verschiedenen Alters aufeinandertreffen, weil das Interesse an bestimmten Themen nicht bei allen im gleichen Alter auftaucht.
Durch Altersmischung können zu alldem wesentliche soziale Erfahrungen durch das gemeinsame Leben aufgebaut und entwickelt werden.

• Helfen und Hilfe bekommen (Kooperationsfähigkeit, Fürsorge)
• Achtung und Rücksichtnahme vor dem Anderssein und Anderskönnen (Toleranzfähigkeit und Integration)
• Voneinander lernen und miteinander lernen (Teamfähigkeit und Kommunikation)

Das Miteinander von jüngeren und älteren Schülern mit unterschiedlichen Entwicklungsständen, Fähigkeiten und Interessen schärft das Bewusstsein für die Individualität des Einzelnen, führt aber andererseits auf der Basis demokratischer Strukturen und des respektvollen Umgangs untereinander zu einer Stärkung des Gemeinschaftsgefühls.

Erfahrungsbericht „Altersmischung“

Als ich meinen Kochkurs gab, hatte ich Zwölfjährige und 18-Jährige und alles dazwischen. Kochen lässt problemlos alle Grenzen verschwinden. Jahre später, als ich moderne Geschichte unterrichtete, hatte ich den zehnjährigen Adrian, der dort zusammen mit Jungen und Mädchen von bis zu 17 Jahren saß. Das Prinzip ist immer dasselbe: Wenn jemand etwas tun will, tut er es. Was zählt, ist das Interesse. Wenn etwas auf einem Fortgeschrittenen-Niveau stattfindet, zählt Fertigkeit. Eine Menge kleiner Kinder sind in etlichen Dingen viel erfahrener als ältere.
Wenn die Fertigkeiten und das Lerntempo nicht bei allen gleich sind, ist das der Punkt, an dem der Spaß beginnt. Die Kinder helfen sich gegenseitig. Sie müssen es, andernfalls würde die Gruppe als Ganzes zurückfallen. Sie wollen es, weil sie nicht um Zensuren oder goldene Sterne [so etwas wie Fleißbienchen] konkurrieren. Sie mögen es, weil es unheimlich befriedigend ist, einem anderen zu helfen und darin erfolgreich zu sein. Und es ist ungemein angenehm, das mit anzusehen. Überall, wohin man in der Schule sieht, begegnet man Altersmischung.

Dann gibt es eine emotionale Seite daran. Es erfüllt für einen 16-Jährigen ein wirkliches Bedürfnis, Vater oder Bruder zu spielen, wenn er am späten Nachmittag auf einer Couch sitzt und in Ruhe einem sich ankuschelnden Sechsjährigen etwas vorliest. Und dem Sechsjährigen gibt es ein tiefes Gefühl von Behaglichkeit und Sicherheit in einer Welt, in der ihn die ganze Zeit sehr große Leute umgeben. Es ist ein Gefühl des Selbstwerts, das eine Zwölfjährige bekommt, wenn sie geduldig einem 16-jährigen Anfänger die Funktionsweise eines Computers erklärt.
Und es gibt eine soziale Seite … Die jüngeren Kinder dienen den älteren als Familien-Modelle – in der Rolle als junge Geschwister oder eigene Kinder. Als Sharon mit vier Jahren auf unsere Schule kam, hatte sie gerade ihre Eltern verloren. Sie war in ihrem ersten Jahr jedermanns „eigenes Kind“; ihr wurde vorgelesen, man spielte mit ihr, unterhielt sich mit ihr, knuddelte sie. Wenn frühere Schüler mit ihren Babys oder Kleinkindern der Schule für einen Tag einen Besuch abstatten, findet man Teenager oft stundenlang mit den Kleinen spielen.
Und es gibt eine Lern-Seite. Kinder lieben es, von anderen Kindern zu lernen. Das Kind als Lehrer ist an den Schwierigkeiten des Schülers meist näher dran als der Erwachsene, da es selbst vor nicht allzu langer Zeit die gleichen Schwierigkeiten hatte. Die Erklärungen sind gewöhnlich einfacher, besser. Es gibt weniger Druck, weniger Beurteilung. Und es gibt einen riesigen Anreiz, zügig und gut zu lernen: dem Mentor gegenüber aufzuholen.
Kinder lieben es auch, anderen etwas beizubringen. Es gibt ihnen das Gefühl eines Wertes, das Gefühl von Fähigkeit. Wichtiger noch: Wenn sie anderen etwas beibringen, hilft ihnen das dabei, mit dem Stoff besser umgehen zu können; sie müssen sich Klarheit darüber verschaffen, es richtig verstehen. Also schlagen sie sich mit dem Stoff herum, bis es in ihrem eigenen Kopf glasklar ist, so klar, dass ihre Schüler es verstehen.

Die „Geheimwaffe“ Altersmischung ist ein Knüller. Sie erhöht das Lern- und das Lehrvermögen an der Schule gewaltig. Sie erschafft eine menschliche Umgebung, die dynamisch ist und der Lebenswirklichkeit entspricht. Die Schule ist oft mit einem Dorf verglichen worden, in dem alle sich mischen, jeder lernt und lehrt und Vorbild ist und hilft und zankt – und seine Rolle im Leben spielt. Ich denke, das ist ein gutes Bild.

Die Sudbury Valley School ist ein Ort, an dem jeder für sich selbst entscheidet, wie er seinen Tag verbringt. Schüler jeden Alters entscheiden, was sie tun -- genau so wie sie entscheiden, wann, wie und wo sie es tun. Diese Freiheit steht im Mittelpunkt der Schule; sie ist ein Recht der Schüler, das nicht verletzt werden darf.

Die Grundlagen der Schule sind einfach: Alle Menschen sind von Natur aus neugierig. Das effizienteste, langanhaltendste und tiefgründigste Lernen findet statt, wenn es vom Lernenden ausgeht und von ihm ausgeübt wird. Alle Menschen sind kreativ, wenn man ihnen ermöglicht, ihre einzigartigen Talente zu entfalten. Altersmischung unter den Schülern fördert die Entwicklung aller Mitglieder der Gruppe. Und: Freiheit ist entscheidend für die Entwicklung persönlicher Verantwortung.

In der Praxis heißt das, daß die Schüler alle ihre Aktivitäten selbst initiieren und sich ihre eigene Umgebung schaffen. Das Gelände, die Mitarbeiter und die Ausstattung sind da, um von den Schülern genutzt zu werden, wenn ihnen danach ist. Die Schule bietet eine Umgebung, in der die Schüler unabhängig sind, in der ihnen vertraut wird und in der sie als verantwortliche Menschen behandelt werden.

Die Sudbury Valley School wurde 1968 gegründet. Sie befindet sich auf einem vier Hektar großen Gelände, das an ausgedehnte Naturschutzgelände angrenzt. Ein Mühlteich bietet Gelegenheit zum Angeln und Schlittschuhlaufen. Die alte Villa aus Stein und die Scheune sind größtenteils wie eine Wohnung eingerichtet. Die Atmosphäre an der Schule ist entspannt und unförmlich.

Egal, wie spät es ist, und egal, wie alt sie sind, alle Schüler an der Schule machen das, was sie wollen. Für gewöhnlich heißt das, daß sie Dinge tun, die in den meisten anderen Schulen nicht getan werden, und zwar mit großer Intensität und Konzentration. Meistens kümmern sich die Schüler nicht darum, ob dabei „Lernen“ stattfindet. Das zu tun, was man will, ist das übliche; Lernen ist das Nebenprodukt.

An der Schule wimmelt es nur so vor Aktivität. Erwachsene und Schüler jeden Alters mischen sich nach Belieben. Überall findet man Leute, die sich unterhalten, die lesen und spielen. Manche sind vielleicht im Fotolabor und entwickeln oder drucken Fotos. Manche sind vielleicht in einem Karate-Kurs oder spielen auf den Matten im Tanzraum. Jemand baut vielleicht ein Bücherregal in der Holzwerkstatt, oder gestaltet eine Kettenhemd-Rüstung und erörtert mittelalterliche Geschichte. Fast immer macht jemand auf die eine oder andere Weise Musik, und andere hören der Musik zu. Vielleicht sieht man jemanden Französisch, Biologie oder Algebra lernen. Es wäre höchst ungewöhnlich, wenn man nicht einige Leute irgendwo mit Computerspielen beschäftigt fände, oder mit Schach. Einige Leute erledigen im Büro die Verwaltungsarbeit der Schule; einige sind in Rollenspiele vertieft; andere Proben ein Theaterstück. Manche tauschen Sticker und andere tauschen ihr Lunch. Eine Gruppe verkauft vielleicht selbstgemachte Pizza, um Geld für eine Aktivität zusammen zu bekommen -- vielleicht müssen sie einen neuen Brennofen kaufen oder wollen einen Ausflug machen. Im Kunst-Raum zeichnen Leute; sie könnten auch nähen, malen oder mit Ton arbeiten, entweder mit der Töpferscheibe oder nur mit den Händen.

Immer gibt es Menschen, die glücklich und beschäftigt spielen, drinnen und draußen, zu jeder Jahreszeit und bei jedem Wetter. Immer gibt es Gruppen, die sich unterhalten, und immer gibt es Einzelpersonen, die hier und da still lesen.

Eine der Sachen, die den meisten Erwachsenen bei Sudbury Valley als erstes auffällt, ist die Leichtigkeit der Kommunikation. Leute, egal welchen Alters, behandeln sich mit zwanglosem Respekt. Es gibt eine angenehme Atmosphäre des Selbstvertrauens, des Vertrauens das typisch für Menschen ist, die die Ziele verfolgen, die sie sich selbst gesetzt haben. Es ist fast nie ruhig, die Atmosphäre ist mit Enthusiasmus geladen, aber nicht chaotisch oder frenetisch.

Die Schüler an Sudbury Valley tun, was sie wollen, aber sie suchen sich nicht unbedingt das aus, was ihnen leicht fällt. Näheres Hinsehen zeigt, daß sie sich immer selbst herausfordern, daß sie sich ihrer eigenen Stärken und Schwächen sehr bewußt sind und wahrscheinlich gerade an ihren Schwächen hart arbeiten. Neben ihrer überschäumenden guten Laune gibt es eine grundlegende Ernsthaftigkeit -- selbst die Sechsjährigen wissen, daß sie, und nur sie, für ihre Bildung verantwortlich sind. Ihnen ist sehr bewußt, daß junge Menschen fast beinahe überall auf der Welt nicht so viel Freiheit und so viel Verantwortung bekommen.

Obwohl die Schule keinen Lehrplan hat, gibt es einige Gewißheiten darüber, was die Schüler lernen. Sie lernen sich selbst kennen. Sie lernen, um das, was sie wollen, zu bitten und danach zu streben, es zu bekommen. Sie lernen, über ethische Fragen nachzudenken. Sie lernen, sich zu konzentrieren. Sie lernen, etwas zu versuchen und Erfolg zu genießen, und sie lernen, es noch mal zu versuchen, wenn sie es beim ersten Mal nicht geschafft haben.

Die Schule wird nach dem Modell des traditionellen New England Town Meetings regiert. Die alltäglichen Angelegenheiten werden auf der wöchentlichen Schulversammlung (School Meeting) geregelt, bei der jeder Schüler und jeder Lehrer eine Stimme hat. Auf der Schulversammlung werden durch Diskussion und Abstimmung Verhaltensregeln, Benutzung von Geräten, finanzielle Ausgaben, Einstellung von Mitarbeitern und all die Abläufe des Betreibens einer Schule beschlossen. Auf diese Weise tragen die Schüler die volle Verantwortung für den effektiven Ablauf und die Lebensqualität an der Schule.

Mit Verletzungen der Regeln befaßt sich das Justizsystem der Schulversammlung, an dem jedes Mitglied der Schulgemeinschaft teilnimmt. Die faire Justizverwaltung ist ein wesentliches Merkmal der Sudbury Valley School und trägt viel zum Vertrauen der Schüler in die Schule bei.

Sudbury Valley bietet jenen Schülern einen High-School-Abschluß an, die in der Lage sind zu zeigen, daß sie bereit sind, sich als verantwortungsbewußte Mitglieder in der Gesellschaft zurechtzufinden. Abgänger gehen aufs College und auf Universitäten überall im Inland und im Ausland. Die meisten werden an der von ihnen gewünschten Schule aufgenommen. Andere Abgänger haben sich direkt in die Welt des Geschäfts, des Handeln, der Kunst, des Handwerks und der technischen Berufe begeben.

Hinter diesen Beschreibungen liegt die Realität der Schule: ein Ort, an dem Freiheit hochgeschätzt wird, an dem gegenseitiger Respekt die Norm ist, an dem Kinder und Erwachsene sich bei einander wohlfühlen, an dem Lernen in das Leben integriert ist.

Der Schultyp, der hier im folgenden beschrieben werden soll, mag utopisch klingen, ist jedoch lebendige Realität: Die älteste dieser Schulen, die Sudbury Valley School in Framingham (Massachusetts, USA), existiert schon seit 1968. Mittlerweile gibt es weltweit, auf vier Kontinenten, mehr als 30 Schulen nach dem Modell der Sudbury Valley School. Immer wieder hat sich in diesen Schulen eindrucksvoll gezeigt, mit welcher Freude, mit welcher Konzentration und welch beachtlichen Ergebnissen Kinder und Jugendliche in Freiheit Lernen. Die Sudbury Valley School ist ein wahres „Erfolgsmodell“, das nun hier als staatliches Bildungsangebot in Serie gehen könnte.

Allgemeines

Diese Schule umfaßt zwischen etwa 20 und 250 Schülern und je nach Schülerzahl drei bis zwölf Mitarbeiter. Die jüngsten Schüler sind etwa vier Jahre alt, die ältesten ungefähr 20. Das „Eintrittsalter“ variiert von Schüler zu Schüler, aber grundsätzlich ist es nie zu spät, Schüler dieser Schule zu werden, und aufhören kann man natürlich auch zu jeder Zeit.

Die Schüler können den ganzen Tag über tun und lassen, was sie wollen, sofern sie dabei niemand anderes stören. Sie können die Schule und das Schulgelände jederzeit und ohne Begründung verlassen. Es gibt keine Pflichtveranstaltungen, höchstens gegenseitige freiwillige Vereinbarungen zwischen Mitarbeitern und Schülern und auch zwischen Schülern untereinander.

Schüler und Mitarbeiter sind völlig gleichberechtigt. Die Schüler duzen die Mitarbeiter und reden sie mit dem Vornamen an, und umgekehrt ist es natürlich genauso. Die Beziehungen zwischen den Schülern und den Mitarbeitern unterscheiden sich kaum von den Beziehungen der Schüler untereinander. Die Atmosphäre in der Schule ist locker und familiär.

Die Schüler werden nicht nach dem Alter getrennt. Klassen gibt es nicht. Freundschaften und Interessengemeinschaften wie Lerngruppen entstehen über Altersunterschiede hinweg.

Leben und Lernen

Unterricht im herkömmlichen Sinne ist die Ausnahme und kommt nur zustande, wenn Schüler dies ausdrücklich wünschen. Lernen ist voll im Leben integriert. Daß die Schule ein Lebensort ist, zeigt sich auch daran, daß sie ähnlich wie eine große Wohnung eingerichtet ist. Klassenräume gibt es nicht.

Einige sitzen still irgendwo in der Gegend und lesen ein Buch, andere unterhalten sich oder diskutieren über irgend etwas und noch andere spielen, machen Sport, surfen im Internet, lesen Zeitung, zeichnen, machen Musik, träumen, usw. Irgendeine Sache klappt nicht so, wie man es sich gedacht hatte, also überlegt man, wie man das Problem lösen kann. Man will irgendwas wissen, also versucht man, es herauszufinden. Manche Sachen probiert man einfach aus, andere läßt man sich von jemandem erklären. Einen Teil lernt man dadurch, daß man Erwachsenen zusieht, wie sie eine Sache tun, oder dadurch, daß man es mit ihnen zusammen tut. Aber das meiste, was man lernt, lernt man von anderen Kindern; und es hat mit dem Leben zu tun – wie man lebt und wie Sachen geschehen. Das meiste kommt vom Herumsitzen und Reden: ein Gedanke kommt auf und entwickelt sich von sich aus weiter. Oft ist einem gar nicht bewußt, daß man lernt. Lernen passiert ganz natürlich, wie atmen auch. Hier wird nicht Zeit abgesessen, sondern hier findet aktives Leben statt.

Daß es in so einer Schule keinen Lehrplan gibt, ist klar. Jeder beschäftigt sich damit, wofür er sich interessiert. Niemand kann einen anderen zum Lernen zwingen. Jeder Schüler entscheidet selbst, welche Themen wichtig sind, und welche nicht. Der Schüler hat die volle Verantwortung für sein Lernen und seine Aktivitäten an der Schule. Niemand hat das Recht, sich in seine Aktivitäten einzumischen – solange der Schüler durch diese nicht das Recht anderer, das gleiche zu tun, verletzt. Es gibt keine Höherbewertung akademischer Themen gegenüber anderen Beschäftigungen. Auch sind die Schüler keiner ständigen Aufsicht durch die Mitarbeiter ausgesetzt.

Die Mitarbeiter drängen sich also nicht auf, sondern stehen zur Verfügung. Da die Schüler hauptsächlich alleine oder von anderen Kindern lernen und Erwachsene nur gelegentlich zu Rate ziehen, werden an Sudbury-Schulen insgesamt nicht so viele Mitarbeiter benötigt wie an traditionellen Schulen. Und während es an den meisten Schulen Lehrer, Hausmeister, Reinigungspersonal und Verwaltungsleute als getrennte Berufe gibt, gibt es an Sudbury-Schulen einfach nur Mitarbeiter. Falls gerade kein Schüler ihre Mitarbeit benötigt, kümmern sich die Mitarbeiter z.B. um Verwaltungsarbeit oder gehen ihren eigenen Interessen nach.

Zensuren oder andere vergleichbare Bewertungen gibt es natürlich nicht. Wer eine Rückmeldung über seine Fähigkeiten haben will, kann einen Mitarbeiter oder andere Schüler um eine Einschätzung bitten. Wer dies unbedingt will, kann sich auch freiwilligen Tests unterziehen, die dann nur dem Schüler zur Information dienen, zu mehr nicht.

Im Laufe der Zeit entwickeln die Schüler spezielle Interessen, denen sie sehr ausgiebig nachgehen, zum Beispiel Musikinstrumente spielen, Computer programmieren, Latein lernen, Philosophie, höhere Mathematik, Quantenphysik, Chemie, usw. Meistens beschäftigen sie sich mit diesen Sachen nicht deshalb, weil sie in ihrem Leben eine Rolle spielen würden, sondern weil sie sich selbst herausfordern wollen. Die Schüler tun überwiegend nicht die Sachen, die ihnen leicht fallen, sondern gerade die, die ihnen schwer fallen. Sie sind sich ihrer Stärken und Schwächen sehr bewußt und arbeiten hart an Letzteren. Und wenn sie etwas nicht auf Anhieb schaffen, versuchen sie es eben noch mal und noch mal, bis sie ihr Ziel erreicht haben. Sie erreichen Höchstleistungen, die nicht durch Drill und Zwang, sondern nur durch Freiwilligkeit erreicht werden können.
