I’ve recently learned of your amazing archiving efforts and I wanted to thank you for all that you have done for the internet community. You’ve really got me thinking more than I had before about the fragile nature of personal data and indeed so much of the personal expression ordinary people output every day.

To that end, I wanted to ask you about Facebook.

As Facebook matures, and presuming it remains the dominant social platform of its type for at least another five years, there are going to be many people who will have died after creating an account (I had a friend die aged just 20 last year and her Facebook has been instrumental in helping her friends and family, some scattered across many miles, come to terms with her passing. It has also provided us with a digital memory of her, but I now realise how fragile that memory is.) While Facebook offer memorial sites right now [which is of course better than their previous offer of deletion], what happens when Facebook is no longer active? Facebook, to me, would seem to be a harder than normal site to archive, due to the crosslinking-dependantcy and fleeting comment nature of such a site. This site, much like the site you mentioned in your talk at the personal digital archiving conference, is full of emotional expression. However, I fear that a similar fate to those of so many other large hosting sites will befall Facebook when it becomes unwanted.
What is your opinion regarding the longevity and challenge of archiving this internet behemoth?

Well, first, let’s start with Facebook itself.

Facebook is the third of what is probably a quartet (or quintet) of the destruction of the innocence of computing.  First was viruses, second was malware, third is facebook. I suspect fourth will be related to control of networking itself, and fifth will be licensing of high level computer ability. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Die besten Lautsprecher nützen nichts, wenn die Soundkarte schrott ist. Der Kopfhörerausgang der integrierten Soundkarte am Laptop ist nicht so der Bringer; da fiept und rauscht es, wenn Daten durch die Netzwerkkarte übertragen werden oder der Prozessor rechnet. Ich denke zurück an die Zeiten, wo meine Soundblaster Audigy Soundkarte die Boxen befeuert hat – klammscharf und satt. Das Problem ist jetzt nur: Mein Notebook hat keine PCI-Steckplätze, wie dies ein Desktoprechner hätte. Bleibt nur noch der Weg via USB über eine externe Soundkarte. Doch unter Linux? Ich hatte mal von Creative Labs so ein Teil, das hatte ich mit Hach und Müh zum tönen gekriegt. Von einstecken und loslegen ist das weit entfernt.

„Kannst du da was empfehlen?“ habe ich einen Bekannten gefragt. Er ist HiFi Enthusiast und hat zuhause so Boxen stehen, wo Gitter bis zur Decke angebracht sind – Membrane, die den Ton abstrahlen. Das Vogelgezwischter, das er dann laufen lässt, ist fast noch räumlicher, als wenn man in der echten Natur im Wald sitzt.
„Ja, da gibt es durchaus einen Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC), den ich empfehlen kann.“ meint er und hält mir ein kleines schwarzes Kästchen hin. Wie gut, dass ich mein Notebook gerade dabei hab. „Darf ich den mal anschliessen und testen, ob das bei mir läuft?“ „Na klar!“

Und oh Wunder:

Es wird sofort erkannt und im Mixxx angezeigt. Ich wähle die neue Soundkarte aus und spiele ein Lied ab. Ja, es tönt! ES FUNKTIONIERT!! Und das einfach so. Keine Treiberinstallation.

Hundert Franken später landet ein Exemplar davon via Ebay in meinem Briefkasten. Wieso nicht früher? Endlich eine vernünftige Soundkarte für Linux! Was habe ich nach sowas gesucht! „external USB soundcard debian“ ist wohl der falsche Suchbegriff. Es heisst „DAC“ (was dasselbe wie eine Soundkarte ist), aber darauf muss man erst mal kommen. Jetzt bin ich endlich fündig geworden.

Ein Mac erkennt es übrigens auch auf Anhieb, für Windows gibt’s Treiber. Eine externe Stromversorgung ist nicht nötig. Und trotzdem hat das Teil Schub ohne Ende. Bis zu 10x so viel wie ein normaler Kopfhörerausgang, gemäss Hersteller. Und es kann 24-bit Audio mit 192 kHz Abtastrate dekodieren. Der Klang ist hochfidel; und dann hat es mir erst noch ein HiFi-Enthusiast empfohlen – was kann da schon schiefgehen?

I despise Facebook. This enormously successful American business describes itself as „a social utility that connects you with the people around you“. But hang on. Why on God’s earth would I need a computer to connect with the people around me? Why should my relationships be mediated through the imagination of a bunch of supergeeks in California? What was wrong with the pub?

And does Facebook really connect people? Doesn’t it rather disconnect us, since instead of doing something enjoyable such as talking and eating and dancing and drinking with my friends, I am merely sending them little ungrammatical notes and amusing photos in cyberspace, while chained to my desk? A friend of mine recently told me that he had spent a Saturday night at home alone on Facebook, drinking at his desk. What a gloomy image. Far from connecting us, Facebook actually isolates us at our workstations.

Lange war’s ruhig. Meine Infrastruktur ist wieder hochgefahren. Was war passiert?
Der Staat ist in meine Wohnung eingebrochen und hat Festplatten, Server, Musikabspielgeräte und selbst das Modem inkl. Switch beschlagnahmt. Und das während meiner Abwesenheit. Das ist offenbar zulässig, wenn jemand „neutrales“ vom Einwohneramt mit anwesend ist.

Grund: Am 9.9.2014 soll jemand von meinem Internetanschluss aus verbotene Pornografie via Edonkey2000 geteilt haben. Ja super… Edonkey2k, wann habe ich das zuletzt benutzt? Das muss noch während meiner Lehre gewesen sein. Und der 9.9.2014, das ist fast vor einem Jahr; als ich meinen Wlan-Anschluss noch direkt und unverschlüsselt meinen Nachbarn zur Verfügung gestellt habe. Fast ein Jahr ist eine etwas lange Reaktionszeit, finden sie nicht, Herr Kommissar? Für so ein Offizialdelikt, wie ihr es nennt, auf das ihr so scharf seid? Inzwischen hat sich die Netzwerkkonfiguration geändert und die Swisscom hat mein Modem durch die Internetbox ersetzt, die ihr beschlagnahmt hattet, um jetzt darauf die Konfigurationseinstellungen auszulesen. Sehr sinnvoll.

Na gut.

Mein Schutzengel testet wohl grad seine Sicherheitssysteme. Fazit: Null Datenverlust, null Datenlecks. Ich habe ein aktuelles Backup, und alle Festplatten sind entweder verschlüsselt oder mit Zufallsdaten überschrieben, also leer. Mein Hauptrechner, das „Mainboard auf einer Stahlplatte“ (das stand so im Protokoll 😀 ) hat zuviel Mühe gekostet, zu demontieren. Das wird mein Ersatzserver.

Das Kopfkino ist das Schlimmste am ganzen. Wenn man noch unterwegs ist, der Server nicht erreichbar, die Befragung steht noch aus. Was geschah, was wird noch geschehen? Ich hatte mir schon Sorgen gemacht, dass sie meinen Server direkt mit der USV rausgetragen und an eine mobile Stromversorgung angeschlossen hätten und dann das Ram auslesen würden. Oder mich solange einsperren, bis ich das Passwort rausrücke. Doch nichts dergleichen, zum Glück. Der Server lag ausgeschaltet neben dem Bürotisch, wo die Befragung stattgefunden hat. Ich durfte ihm noch einmal winken, bevor er auf unbestimmte Zeit in die heiligen Hallen der digitalen Forensik gespiegelt wird. Zweitens, ich habe das Recht, die Aussage zu verweigern.

Für mich riecht das nach einer Geheimdienst-Trollaktion. So ein Logeintrag ist schnell erstellt. Der Wachtmeister hat alle Enigmaboxen beschlagnahmt und sich erstaunlich stark für deren Funktionsweise interessiert. Gut möglich, dass dahinter der Nachrichtendienst steckt. Ein Einschüchterungsversuch? Zusätzliche Informationsgewinnung?

Wir hatten noch darüber gewitzelt, dass ich den Staat noch gar nicht spüre, wo wir doch so heisse, subversive Kryptoprojekte machen. Jetzt spüre ich ihn – irgendetwas machen wir also richtig!

Von dem her: Das war eine gute Übung. Ich hatte es ja fast erwartet, dass es irgendwann soweit kommt. Die Vorkehrungen haben sich gelohnt; mein Sicherheitskonzept verhebt, ich bin auf freiem Fuss und kann weiterarbeiten. Und ich lerne etwas über euch. Ich weiss jetzt, wie ihr Wohnungen durchsucht, worauf ihr achtet und was dabei passiert. Sobald das Verfahren abgeschlossen ist, werde ich meine Erkenntnisse mit anderen teilen.
