Nutzlos und aufwendig: Thun bricht den Versuch mit Überwachungsvideos im öffentlichen Raum vorzeitig ab.

Keine nachweisbare Wirkung, schlechte Bildqualität und starke rechtliche Einschränkungen: All diese Nachteile haben den Thuner Gemeinderat dazu bewogen, die Videoüberwachung wieder einzustellen.

Der bis 2017 geplante Pilotversuch an fünf Standorten werde vorzeitig beendet, teilte die Stadtregierung am Mittwoch mit. Sollten sich die Voraussetzungen dereinst ändern, will der Gemeinderat die Sache neu beurteilen.

Die Videoüberwachung lief seit 2012. Insgesamt acht Kameras zeichneten in den Nächten auf Freitag, Samstag und Sonntag das Geschehen im öffentlichen Raum auf. Die Stadt wollte so die Sicherheit und das Sicherheitsempfinden erhöhen.

Bildqualität zu schlecht für Beweismittel

Allerdings setzt die Gesetzgebung zum Datenschutz enge Grenzen, wie der Gemeinderat schreibt. So dürfen die Kameras nicht schwenken, und die Aufnahmen müssen nach 100 Tagen automatisch gelöscht werden.

Zudem ist die Qualität der via Internet übermittelten Bilder so schlecht, dass die Aufnahmen nicht als Beweismittel verwendet werden können. Die Kantonspolizei konnte seit Inbetriebnahme der Kameras keinen einzigen Fahndungserfolg melden, der dank Video-Aufnahmen zustande gekommen wäre.

Eine präventive Wirkung der Videoüberwachung könne nicht nachgewiesen werden, schreibt der Gemeinderat weiter. Potenzielle Täter und Störenfriede wüssten ja genau, wo und wie aufgezeichnet werde.

«Die Wirksamkeit der Videoüberwachung ist sehr gering», stellte Sicherheitsvorsteher Peter Siegenthaler (SP) fest. Neue Kameras und eine bessere Übertragungstechnologie würden über 15’000 Franken kosten. «Vorläufig setzen wir diesen Betrag besser für gezielte Polizeikontrollen oder Anpassungen des Auftrags an die privaten Sicherheitsfirmen ein.»

Gegen gesellschaftliche und moralische Normen zu verstossen ist nicht nur etwas, was wir genervt dulden sollten, sondern es ist unser aller Pflicht.

Anyone who cares for freedom and truth, anyone who believes that humanity only progresses through being daring and sometimes disrespectful, now has a duty to rile and stir and outrage; a duty to break out of the new grey conformism; a duty to ridicule these new guardians of decency; a duty to tell them: „Fuck your orthodoxies.“

Weihrauch brennt neben dem kunstvoll aufgestapelten Holzstapel, der später zum Seelenfeuer entzündet wird. Eine Laterne wird im Kreis herumgereicht. Wir geben das Licht weiter. Die Ritualleiterin geht mit dem Weihrauch im Kreis umher und flüstert jedem was zu. „Ich liebe dich“, kommt sie flüsternd bei mir vorbei. Gänsehaut fährt mir über den Rücken. Und dann wurde es erst mal still im grossen Kreis. Alle stehen andächtig da und denken darüber nach, was soeben passiert ist. „Stärneglanz – wünsch dr öppis!“ flüstert eine Mädchenstimme mir zu, und lässt Glimmer in meine Hand rieseln.

Die Ritualleiterin entzündet nun das Seelenfeuer mit dem Licht aus der Laterne, welches im Kreis weitergereicht wurde. Jeder hat einen Stock mitgebracht. Sie verbindet alle Stöcke mit einem langen Faden. „Wir sind alle verbunden.“ Der jüngste, ein mittlerer und der älteste Mensch führen nun die Reihe an und legen ihr Stöckchen in das Feuer, zusammen mit allen anderen. Das Feuer brennt gross. „Wir ziehen alle an einem Strang. Denkt daran, auf eine super Woche – es geht Füürwärts!“

Und so wurde das Feuerfestival für dieses Jahr eröffnet.

Six years since the invention of the blockchain, more people are beginning to see the powerful political implications that this technology brings. People from diverse backgrounds have been weighing in on its disruptive potential. While libertarians embrace the potential of cryptocurrencies to break up monopolies of the ‘too big to fail’ banking and payment companies, the rise of this technology was met with skepticism by many socialists. Activists who call for economic equality and oppose governments harsh austerity go further to say Bitcoin will become another tool for neoliberalism. So what is the disruptive force inherent in this technology? Is it tied to a specific political ideology?

Critics from the left primarily come from observations of particular events surrounding decentralized digital currency. On the surface, the trend of speculators trading Bitcoin and manipulation of exchange rates can resemble gambling, and some see Bitcoin as recapitulating the existing Wall Street casino-style derivative economy. This investment friendly image is strengthened when economists chime in to depict Bitcoin’s fixed monetary supply (a total of 21M bitcoin is created) as a currency mimicking assets like gold and criticize it as having a deflationary monetary design that would incentivize hoarding and increase wealth inequality.

Contrary to these perceptions, Bitcoin was never meant as a get-rich-quick scheme. While it possesses gold-like characteristics, it is also radically different, as it is highly portable and divisible (Bitcoin can be divided into 8 decimal points and more if consensus is reached). This is a new monetary design that has never existed before.

Schönes Essay von Fefe über Softwareentwicklung:

Ich habe früh in meinem Leben mit Softwareentwicklung angefangen. Ich erinnere mich noch, wie ich in den 80er Jahren Weihnachtslieder in GW-BASIC programmiert habe, und eine sehr coole Benutzeroberfläche gebaut habe, bei der man mit den Pfeiltasten in einem Menü herumnavigieren konnte. Auf unserem Monochrom-Bildschirm in 80x25 sah das verdammt cool aus. Viel cooler als ein Großteil der anderen Software, die wir so im Einsatz hatten.

Damals wie heute nagte der Gedanke in mir, irgendwo könnte das irgendjemand irgendwo besser können als ich. Also nicht im Sinne von: Der hat mehr Zeit investiert und mehr Erfahrung und ist daher effizienter. Nein. Besser im Sinne von: Wenn der sähe, wie ich hier herumkrautern muss, um zu meinen Ergebnissen zu kommen, dann würde der ein lautes Lachen nur mit Mühe unterdrücken können.
