Ich hatte ja vor kurzem smoothiecharts.org entdeckt, und da hat‘s mich einfach gejuckt, sowas für den Geräuschpegel unserer Arduino-Installation zu machen.

Nur war das nicht so einfach. Die Ethernet-Schnittstelle von Arduino ist alles andere als stabil. Maximal 4 Sockets, Verbindungen, die nicht sauber getrennt werden, Bugs im Firmwarecode… Es wurde einige male spät am Abend, und ich habe etliche Möglichkeiten durchprobiert. Die Schnittstelle stürzte nach ca. 1h immer wieder ab.

Die Lösung des Problems ist dieser Dreizeiler:

Heisst soviel wie: „Solange du verbunden bist, trenne die Verbindung!“.
3 Zeilen Code, und der Sauhund läuft stabil. Endlich.

Das war der Geräuschpegel von gestern. Um 6:30 kam die Putzfrau mit dem lauten Staubsauger. „Ob das ein Alkoholtest sei, wenn ich beim Dezibert ins Mikrofon blase…“ – Nein, das Teil misst nur die Lautstärke. Unruhe am Morgen, Mittag… Und grosse Diskussionen um 17:30.

Interessant, was so scheinbar harmlose Daten wie „Lautstärke über die Zeit“ plötzlich aussagen können…

Techies haben die Eigenschaft, ruhig und konzentriert in Codewelten zu schwelgen. Und sie haben noch etwas: Macht über Maschinen. Sie können den Maschinen beibringen, etwas nützliches für sie zu tun.

Diese Idee hatten wir, und daraus entstand ein Lab-Projekt: Eine Arduino Installation.

Arduino ist eine Open-Source Hardware Plattform, welche einen schnellen Einstieg in die Hardwareprogrammierung ermöglicht. Man hat ein paar Eingänge, ein paar Ausgänge, und kann das Board mit diversen Zusatzmodulen und Sensoren erweitern.

Wir haben uns eine LED-Matrix, ein Mikrofon, ein Ethernet-Shield und einen Servomotor boschtet.

Was kam dabei heraus?

Ein „Finger“ 🙂

Er misst alle 100ms den Geräuschpegel und vergleicht diesen Wert mit dem Vorherigen. Falls die Differenz einen bestimmten Wert überschreitet, wird das Penalty-Level erhöht. Die Penalty-Skala geht von 0 bis 23.

Der Penalty-Handler kümmert sich um die Aktionen, die in den Levels auszuführen sind. Finger heben wenn es laut wird, nach einer Weile Stille Finger wieder senken, Twittern wenn es übermässig laut ist…

Der Geräuschpegel ist laut, Penalty-Wert wird erhöht und auf der LED-Matrix angezeigt:

Der Finger bleibt solange oben, bis es wieder ruhig ist.

Auch wenn viel Raum für Interpretation und Gerüchte ist, der Kern der Geschichte ist erstaunlich. In kurz: Ein Computervirus/-wurm der (mit sehr hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit) hergestellt und verbreitet wurde mit dem alleinigen Ziel das Nuklerarkraftwerk Bushehr im Iran „abzustellen“ – und dies mit Erfolg tat.

Stuxnet ist ein Wurm der sich auf Windows-Computer verbeitet(e), sich dabei sehr unauffällig verhielt und damit über ein Jahr in der freien Laufbahn war. Er verhält sich zumindest so lange unauffällig, bis er eine Programmierumgebung für einen Siemens Industriecontroller vom Typ SIMATIC WinCC/Step 7 angeschlossen findet. Ist eine solche Umgebung vorhanden, so verändert er die daran angeschlossene Steuerung nach immer demselben Muster.

Nach Aussage von Siemens wurden bis anhin 15 Controller verändert und nur bei einem zeigte diese Neuprogrammierung Erfolg: Beim iranischen Nuklerarkraftwerk Bushehr, welches in der Folge abgestellt werden musste.

Die Vermutung, dass es sich tatsächlich um dieses eine Ziel handelte ist zwar dreist, wenn man sich jedoch die geographische Infektions-Statistik in der sehr ausführlichen Analyse von Symantec [pdf, 3.1 MB] anschaut ziemlich plausibel.

Nun zur Frage, wer so was entwickelt? Stuxnet ist nach übereinstimmender Aussage aller Analysen einer der komplexesten Computerviren die je entdeckt wurde. Zudem wurde sehr grosszügig mit „teuren Ressourcen“ umgegangen. So beispielswiese nutzte die Software gleichzeitig vier „zero-day exploits“ (bisher unbekannte Sicherheitslücken) — normalerweise freut sich ein Hacker eine gefunden zu haben und baut darum seinen Hack. Also kaum der Juniorprogrammieren im Hobbyraum seiner Vaters. Bruce Schneier schätzt einen Aufwand von 8-10 Personen während einem halben Jahr.

Eine tolle Geschichte, aber auch ein Wink was uns im Bereich der Computersicherheit allen noch vervorstehen könnte. Ein guter Ausgangspunkt zur weiteren Information der Post bei Bruce Schneier oder die bereits genannte (sehr technische) Analyse von Symantec auf 51 Seiten (!!).

Aber meine Güte. Die setzen tatsächlich Windows ein bei Kernkraftwerken (!!!)
Was aber noch viel beunruhigender ist: Diese Anlage ist möglicherweise ans Internet angeschlossen; USB Sticks können einfach so mitgenommen und angeschlossen werden.

Ein Kernkraftwerk MUSS ein Inselsystem sein, so wie bei Mission Impossible – d.h. kein Kontakt zur Aussenwelt. Nichts. Alles andere ist grobfahrlässig.

Ach ja, das ganze soll sich gemäss Hersteller ganz einfach via iPhone/iPad/iPod steuern lassen.
