In der hochgeheimen, abgeschotteten Welt der Geheimdienste ist es nicht ungewöhnlich, dass Personalvermittler die Mission und den Kunden von potenziellen Neueinstellungen fernhalten, bis sie Verschwiegenheitsdokumente unterschrieben haben und einen Briefing-Prozess durchliefen.
Als Stroud im Mai 2014 zum ersten Mal in die Villa gebracht wurde, gab das Raven-Management ihr zwei getrennte Briefings, Rücken an Rücken.
Im ersten, intern als „Purple Briefing“ bekannt, sagte sie, dass Raven eine rein defensive Mission verfolgen würde, die die Regierung der VAE vor Hackern und anderen Bedrohungen schützt.
Gleich nachdem das Briefing beendet war, sagte sie, dass ihr gesagt wurde, sie hätte gerade eine Cover-Story erhalten.
Dann erhielt sie das „Black Briefing“, dessen Kopie von Reuters überprüft wurde. Raven ist „die offensive, operative Abteilung von NESA und wird nie in der Öffentlichkeit anerkannt werden„, heißt es im schwarzen Memo. Die NESA, oder National Electronic Security Authority, war die Version der NSA der VAE.
Stroud wäre Teil von Raven’s Analyse- und Zielentwicklungsladen, der der Regierung helfen soll, ihre Feinde online zu identifizieren, sie zu hacken und Daten zu sammeln. Diese Ziele wurden vom Kunden NESA, der heutigen Signals Intelligence Agency, bereitgestellt.
Die Sprache und Geheimhaltung der Briefings spiegelten ihre Erfahrungen bei der NSA wider, sagte Stroud.
