INFP Credo: „Be guided by your heart“

INFP Keywords: Loyal, Shy, Helpful, Dependable, Committed, Deep, Sympathetic, Nosy, Imaginative, Resourceful, Caring, Gentle, Idealistic

The INFP has two contrary characteristics, curiosity and shyness. They love to know what’s going on, feel excluded if not kept informed but do not like to be the centre of attention. The INFP always wants to be invited to the party – even though the chances are she won’t show up!

There is a sensitive, caring side to the INFP which means they will be see the interconnections between people and pick up on the verbal and non-verbal cues. The INFP does not want to be constrained by rules, regulations and obligations, and dislike the routine. Others will see the INFP as totally flexible, gentle and difficult to understand. The INFP likes to do things in their own way and just get on with it, uninhibited and not micromanaged.

The INFP would not appreciate criticism or a hard task-master. Yet there is a crusading side to the INFP which would surprise even those who knew the person well. When a personal value, or belief is trodden on, then the INFP can become outspoken and turn on the transgressor. Their values are usually so well hidden that the other person may not realise, but the INFP becomes like a champion of the cause and will be expressive, animated and at times go for the jugular.

The INFP values most those who take the time, trouble and effort to really get to know them. Only those who are allowed through the INFP ‚assault course‘ will get genuinely close. To others the INFP will seem like a gentle enigma. The INFP will often display their reactions to their feelings, rather than their feelings, and may bottle things up which then leak out at strange moments thus adding to the ‚difficult to understand‘ image.

An INFP does not like to be categorised. They value their autonomy, and feel ‚different,‘ and any system, (including this one), which tries to ‚define‘ or ‚explain‘ them would be denigrated. The INFP would say, ‚You can’t put me in a box, I’m different,‘ indeed they would all see this.

To the INFP life is a long and convoluted quest for meaning and harmony and their personal values are so important to them. This means that it is essential to the INFP that their beliefs and their actions are totally in sync at all times. An INFP is unlikely to take any action which they don’t believe in their heart is right.

Sensitive, caring and empathetic INFPs are excellent in supporting roles where people have to be looked after – especially if those people are close to the INFP. Because it can take so long (if ever) to get to know the INFP others paradoxically may see them as slightly cool or aloof, as they engage best when they have allowed someone into their inner sanctum.

Objectivity is difficult for the INFP as INFPs feel things, really FEEL them and so to step back and give an objective appraisal of a situation or a person is hard because the INFP will consider these in relation to their own values and these are very difficult to understand as they are so personal.

They will take things to heart and any criticism will be taken very personally and seriously, seen as a personal affront and so wound very deeply. Rather than take issue with the person, the INFP will invariably store their feelings up and they will fester. So serious can this be that the INFP may, rather than bring the issue up later, simply drop the offending person from their life-space. The INFP has a tendency to idealise relationships and so are frequently disappointed when others don’t measure up.

The INFP inhabits the internal world of imagination and creativity and are not bound by traditions or the usual conventions. They won’t deliberately go and buck the system they will simply withdraw and do things their own way. They can live and let live except when that lifestyle impinges upon their own values and then the INFP can become rigid and unforgiving.

The ideal world of the INFP is one where they can immerse themselves totally in some interesting and personally meaningful tasks and reflective activities. The INFP will however be devoted to things they personally see as valuable and so can make excellent supporters of organisations and causes. They are not naturally practical and indeed may have to force themselves to do the mundane. However if the INFP can see some clear MEANING in task, that it is part of a wider cause and the contribution can make a really difference, then they will work long and hard on all aspects because then it makes sense to them.

An INFP will always look at the wider ramifications and any activity, task or project must have some bigger meaning or be part of something to which they feel they can expend their emotional energies and, if this is the case, the INFP can be so productive and even sweep up the detail – provided there is a clear causal link to the bigger picture. In some organisations it is the fact that an INFP is committed to the cause that makes things tick although they prefer to remain independent of spirit and of control they can, paradoxically, be excellent company-people. The INFP has an interesting, unique take on the world, will be generally seen as reserved but their passions know no bounds if they are committed to the task/project/people/organisation.

INFPs have the ability to see good in almost anyone or anything. Even for the most unlovable the INFP can have (often misplaced) pity. Their extreme depth of feeling is often hidden, even from themselves, until circumstances evoke a seemingly uncharacteristic impassioned response. Of course, not all of life is rosy, and INFPs are not exempt from the same disappointments and frustrations as the rest of humanity, but their duty is to the greater good – the cause and they are intrinsically idealistic and gentle in nature.

INFPs can even adopt the role of crusading ESTJ to get things done, (surprising others who’ve seen only the gentle, quiet being), but only for a short period and not without expending considerable amounts of energy.

In a team situation, the INFP will bring a sense of conviction and what is ‚the right thing to do.‘ Although quiet, the INFP can glue the team together and ensure that all members‘ views are considered and given equal weight and the INFP will actually become vocal in their support of new ideas and contributions.

INFPs exist for a reason

INFPs exist for a reason. We all face many of the same problems, loneliness, sadness, wondering why we exist, but at the same time, we have hope, we are the dreamers of society. I have always loved dreaming, dreaming of perfect worlds without war, dreaming of a world in which I belonged, dreaming of finding the love of my life, dreaming of anything that wasn’t the world I lived in.

This is why we exist, we are the dreamers. What would life be like without dreamers like Mohandas Gandhi, George Orwell and John Lennon, not to even mention the hundreds of other well known philosophers, psychologists, writers, directors, filmmakers and artists who have helped the world become what it is now,. INFPs aren’t flightless birds among eagles, no we fly higher than many other people. Even the mother of the MBTI „Isabell Briggs Myer herself was an INFP. INFPs exist in all walks of life pathing paths for others to follow. Don’t feel hopeless, because the world depends on INFPs to lead humanity down the right road. I feel like INFPs will be especially needed in the years to come with many of the effects humans are having on the earth. In the past INFPs have changed this world to make it closer to what they viewed as ideal, so you could too.

I have always felt this need to change the world in some major way. I wanted to be a psychologist, but I don’t care for the american dream of living in a big house, whether I am helping people or not, no, I want to create something that will change the world, like possibly a machine that would allow people to dream at will. The only problem is I fear what that machine would do to humanity, as millions of people are already playing World of Warcraft, imagine if people could dream whenever they wish with full consciousness.

Last but not least, I would like to say that since I have joined this site I have felt alot less lonely and out of place, and I have since gained 620 wonderful friends who are also compassionate dreamers who love to talk about the deeper things in life =3.

INFP in a Nutshell

INFPs are imaginative idealists, guided by their own core values and beliefs. To a Healer, possibilities are paramount; the realism of the moment is only of passing concern. They see potential for a better future, and pursue truth and meaning with their own individual flair.

INFPs are sensitive, caring, and compassionate, and and are deeply concerned with the personal growth of themselves and others. Individualistic and nonjudgmental, INFPs believe that each person must find their own path. They enjoy spending time exploring their own ideas and values, and are gently encouraging to others to do the same. INFPs are creative and often artistic; they enjoy finding new outlets for self-expression.

What Makes the INFP Tick

INFPs value authenticity and want to be original and individual in what they do. They are often concerned with a search for meaning and truth within themselves. Following tradition holds little appeal for the INFP; they prefer to do their own exploration of values and ideas, and decide for themselves what seems right. INFPs are often offbeat and unconventional, but they feel no desire to conform. The INFP would rather be true to themselves than try to fit in with the crowd.

INFPs are accepting and nonjudgmental in their treatment of others, believing that each person must follow their own path. They are flexible and accommodating, and can often see many points of view. It is important to the INFP to support other people; however, the INFP may react strongly if they feel their own values are being violated. They especially hate being steamrolled by people who insist there is one right way to do things. INFPs want an open, supportive exchange of ideas.

Recognizing an INFP

INFPs may initially seem cool, as they reserve their most authentic thoughts and feelings for people they know well. They are reflective and often spiritual, and often interested in having meaningful conversations about values, ethics, people, and personal growth. Typically curious and open-minded, the Healer continually seeks a deeper understanding of themselves and of the people around them. They are passionate about their ideals, but private as well; few people understand the depth of the INFP’s commitment to their beliefs.

INFPs are sensitive and empathetic, and engage themselves in a lifelong quest for meaning and authenticity. The mundane aspects of life are of less interest to this type, and they are more excited by interesting ideas than by practical facts. They typically accept others without question, and may take special interest in offbeat points of view or alternative lifestyles. They often have a special affection for the arts, especially the avant garde, as they love experiencing new concepts in self-expression.

INFPs as Leaders

In leadership positions, INFPs motivate others through encouragement and positive vision. They are deeply idealistic, and when working for a cause that is important to them, they bring a quiet determination to their leadership role. They often see the potential in other people, and are good at inspiring others to use their gifts.

INFPs are supportive, creative leaders who encourage their teams to think outside the box. Because of their flexible nature and strong desire for harmony, they may avoid conflict and delay making difficult decisions. They do best leading cooperative teams of like-minded people who are similarly committed to their vision.

INFPs on a Team

INFPs are supportive and imaginative team members who contribute by understanding the ideals of their teammates and working to bring unity to the group’s mission. They listen openly to many points of view, and are talented at coming up with creative solutions that incorporate the ideas and priorities of everyone involved. They are flexible and innovate thinkers, and are willing to consider almost any option, so long as it is congruent with their values.

INFPs do best on a team that is guided by vision, and want to have an authentic understanding of the team’s purpose. They want to have team members who are similarly committed to a cause, and who are willing to explore the possibilities for achieving their ideals. Teams which are highly oriented to action, without considering the deeper issues or the alternative options, may alienate the INFP. INFPs want an environment of mutual support and acceptance, and may have trouble on teams where there is much conflict or competition. Judgment and negativity tend to stifle their talent for creative problem-solving.

INFP Communication Style

INFPs are gentle, encouraging communicators who enjoy exploring options and ideas. They envision possibilities for people and are often good at coming up with creative, flexible solutions to problems. They are typically attentive listeners who try to adapt their communication style to the people they are dealing with. Compassionate and cooperative, they tend to be appreciative of other people and their ideas, although they may be reserved about sharing their own closely held values and ideas with people they do not know well.

INFPs as Partners

In relationships, the INFP is nurturing, empathic, and loyal. Healers select their friends and partners carefully, looking for a strong bond and congruent values. They are self-aware and often spiritual.

INFPs tend to be open-minded and accepting of another’s behavior and preferences, so long as their core values are not violated. They support their partners‘ individuality, and encourage them to explore their interests and ideas.

INFPs look for ways to compromise and accommodate other people, and often have creative solutions to interpersonal problems. They can be very sensitive, but often keep negative reactions to themselves because they are reluctant to engage in confrontation.

Close and harmonious relationships are important to INFPs, although they also need a lot of independent time to think and reflect. They often want plenty of freedom to express themselves and pursue greater self-awareness. They value a partner who is committed and loving, yet provides them with the support they need to independently explore the mysteries of life.

INFPs as Parents

As parents, INFPs are caring, supportive, and adaptable. They rarely establish a strict or structured household, preferring instead to address problems and situations as they arise. They often allow their children a lot of latitude and influence in making decisions, and may leave the creation and enforcement of household rules up to another parent.

Children of INFPs often find that they have the freedom to express themselves and make their own decisions until they violate their INFP parent’s values. When values are in question, the Healer parent becomes firm and inflexible.

How to Speak „INFP“

  • INFPs are very sensitive to criticism and view everything personally. However, they may never come out and tell you that you’ve hurt their feelings. If in doubt, stay away from or tread lightly with topics you think they might be sensitive about.
  • Be very careful not to dismiss, discount, or make light of the things they consider important. If you do, you run the risk of damaging your relationship permanently, since INFPs may hold grudges far longer than other types.
  • If possible, find out how your idea, suggestion, or proposal fits in with one of their passions, and try to link the two, or point out commonalities.
  • Give them plenty of time to consider your ideas. Be prepared to discuss the impact they will have on others, including the future implications.
  • If relevant, convey your sincere belief in the values of what you are proposing. If you are not genuine, it will be obvious to them, and they will immediately, and perhaps permanently, reject your idea or proposal.
  • Respect their style of decision making, which usually requires time and privacy to mull things over. Consider alternatives all along the way, change plans as new information is discovered, perhaps even start all over if the central mission or concept is corrupted by too much external influence.
  • Remember that INFPs are process people. Build time for revision, modification, and reflection into any schedule.

from The Art of SpeedReading People, Tieger & Barron-Tieger

Description:

INFPs are quiet, creative, sensitive and perceptive souls who often strike others as shy, reserved and cool. These folks have a rare capacity for deep caring and commitment–both to the people and causes they idealize. INFPs guide their behavior by a strong inner sense of values, rather than by conventional logic and reason. Forced to cope with this facts-and-figures „real“ world we inhabit, INFPs may appear to have been imported from another galaxy! They gravitate toward creative or human service careers which allow them to use their instinctive sens of empathy and remarkable communication skills. Strongly religious, spiritual or philosophical people, INFPs may see the purpose of their lives as an inner journey, quest or personal unfolding. More practical or rational types may tend to discredit the INFP’s sources of understanding as mystical. The search for a soulmate is a preoccupation for many INFPs, who must balance their need for privacy and peace with their yearning for human connection. If there seems to be an air of sadness in the INFP’s spirit, blame it on this type’s longing for the perfect in all things.

A More Honest Look into MBTI Descriptions: The INFP

Please hold, we are currently busy changing the world, and will probably die before we get back to you. Thank you!

Keirsey Description: „The Healer“

Honest Description: „The Radical Idealist“

Prototypical Examples: Aldous Huxley, William Shakespeare, A. S. Neil, George Orwell, Edgar Allan Poe, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Albert Camus, Anne Frank, Soren Kierkegaard, Francis Fukuyama, Lady Gaga, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Leolo from the film “Leolo,” Hamlet from the play “Hamlet”

Pros:

  • Can be surprisngly badass from time to time
  • Tend to be very passionate when aroused
  • Great at coming up with world-changing ideas
  • Tend to be pretty decent writers
  • The best at pretending to be an INTJ, even better than most INTJ’s

Cons:

  • Can be a total gay-ass whiny bitch
  • Horrible in attaining the position to implement their ideas
  • Tendency to die really young, usually by their own accord
  • Tendency to develop attachment issues
  • If they rely too much on their Fi without the reins of their Ne or Si they are prone to becoming rebels without a cause
  • Tend to be illogical when faced with contradictions to their beliefs and ethics
  • More susceptibility to being stupid compared to other INXX’s
  • Tend to have a plain sense of fashion due to repressed Fe

Reasoning: Remember that guy you use to play Dugneons and Dragons with who always played the Chaotic Good character, who’d go around doing haphazardly destructive things and end up making your fantasy world better in the end? That guy was probably an INFP. If there is one thing INFP’s love to do, it’s saving the world, even if it means destroying it in the process. Fortunately, they are really, really bad at attaining actual power, and tend to only write down a bunch of their ideas without actually affecting the world in their lifetime, which end up being adapted centuries later by people more capable of actually doing something, like an INFJ. INFP’s are sort of the children of the MBTI. They are basically always young and naive about the world, no matter how much knowledge they accumulate about it in their lifetime. In fact, well developed INFP’s may seem to be entirely disconnected from reality, not in the sense an INTP or INTJ is, that is, they spend most of their time in their head (which they do), but rather that the INFP takes little or no stock in reality. To XXTJ’s, especially XSTJ’s, INFP’s may come across as downright inept and stupid, even though they may be brilliant thinkers. It’s not so much that INFP’s are totally unaware of reality, it’s moreover that they really don’t care. INFP’s are doomed to naively believing that humanity is capable of being good to one another and that a fair and just society is actually possible. They tend to assume that this is only possible when all of society disregards reality and thinks only about the theoretical. This doesn’t mean they disregard praxis entirely, just that INFP’s see it as something other idealists and thinkers are too caught up with. They are also doomed to a certain type of utilitarian thinking, in that everything justifies the ends to serve their idea, and will disregard all details or logic about anything in order to suit whatever meets their self-made truth. INFP’s tend to be contrarians, not out of search for uniqueness, but rather because of the natural balance of XSTJ to INFP ratio within society, which has remained in a constant flux of roughly 50:1 since the dawn of humanity, and causes a constant clash of energy between Guardian and Idealist types. Another give away of a well-developed INFP is, believe it or not, that they act like an INTJ. All good INFP’s have their infamous “INTJ Mask,” and they love wearing it in most social situations. The reason for this is the INFP’s incredibly high expectations for humanity; they end up getting disappointed, sometimes even misanthropic, and they see the majority of people as obstacles to their utopia. So, in order to hide their feelings and sadness from the world, they rely on their Te and Si instead of their Fi and iNtuition. Aldous Huxley is the poster child of INFP’s. For one, he is a writer, and INFP’s are known for their love of writing. Secondly, Huxley had a central idea and meaning behind everything he did. He was incredibly idealistic. If you read his last novel (and personally, I think, it is WAY better than his more popular one, Brave New World), Island, you can tell Huxley wasn’t anchored from believing the possibility of a better world for humanity by what it was like at the time he wrote it. In fact, it was because of the conditions he saw society in during his life that prompted him to imagine utopia as so realistically feasible. This is a very strong characteristic of INFP’s, particularly well-developed ones: that the conditions of reality have little or no restraining effect on their perception or belief in the possibility or condition of utopia. Stereotypical INFP’s keep a journal where they lock away all of that Introverted Feeling that they hide from the world, and, unlike the houses (or caves) they live in, will freak out if so much as a stain of “the last tear of humanity” drops upon its “virgin white pages of hopes and dreams” (e.g. re-reading their work seventeen times to make sure that they didn’t mix up their semicolons and their commas; as that would be absolutely devastating to the INFP!).

Well-developed INFP’s tend to attach themselves to a certain idea and become that idea incarnate. They run on an intrinsic motor of idealism that is internal and inseparable from their very character. Hence, in both a somewhat tongue-in-cheek but also very honest remark, INFP’s tend to fantasize about being martyrs. Compared to their Judging counterparts, the INFJ, INFP’s could really care less if their idea ever actually manifests. Of course, like the INFJ idealist, both types will fight non-stop for their idea to come true, and because of this the two types often go hand-in-hand when changing society. However, while the INFJ is more concerned with praxis, the INFP has so internalized their idea that it tends to become dogmatic, to the point that the idea exists within itself, whether or not society regards it to be true (or accepts it into praxis). This is to say that the INFP would probably be satisfied in somehow constructing a manifesto in the form of their death, with or without knowing whether or not it’ll ever come true. This is, perhaps, simultaneously the greatest strength and weakness of the INFP. The INFJ, on the other hand, is a little more in touch with reality (although still very idealistic like the INFP) in the sense that they are not satisfied until they actually see their efforts manifested in some form. Writing down all their ideas just to be killed will not cut it for the INFJ. One other big difference between the two types is how they go about solving problems, ethical and idealistic (the two are often insperable for these types). INFP’s, in their natural state, don’t see the maze they are traveling through. They rely off intuition and strange incoherent, almost mystical strategies to navigate themselves, while INFJ’s see a bird’s eye view of the maze. This doesn’t make INFJ’s better problem solvers, it’s more to say that they have a more “planned-out” path to follow and don’t rely off gut feeling as much as INFP’s.

Comparing INFP’s to ISFP’s is a fun thing to do, being that ISFP’s are one of the four borderline personality types (the other three being ENTJ’s, ENFP’s, and ISTJ’s) in terms of their Sensing. Out of any of the Sensor types, the ISFP tends to be the most idealistic. Although their dominant Fi (which they share with the INFP) is typically coupled with a strong auxiliary Sensing function rather than iNtuitive function per the INFP’s case, both types tend to live in a deep and rich inner world, a sort of fantasyland. In the ISFP’s case, being that they are Sensors, this fantasy world is worked into creation over their lifespan via a bottom-up processing engagement, creating a deep aesthetic lens through which the ISFP sees everything. Likewise, the INFP’s lens creates a heavy bias upon which they see the world through, though it is crafted via top-bottom processing, and therefore tends to be more idealistic and societal rather than concerning a specific beauty or set of emotions. The big difference between the INFP and the ISFP is that the ISFP does not become as engaged or as agitated as easily, and especially not as expressively, as the INFP. The INFP is easy-going like the ISFP most of the time, until their deep inner world of ethics is crossed, where they become vehement spokespeople for their ideas, and tend to throw all their once well-maintained logic out the window, often disappointing their INTP counterparts.

INFP Personality Type in Gifted People

On the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, INFP is rare personality type, found in only about 4% of the general population. Yet, of the possible 16 types, it is the one most frequently found for gifted people. This scarcity, coupled with their extreme intelligence, renders them seldom understood, and thus, rarely validated in relationships.

The following material is based on qualitative research involving in-depth interviews with eight highly gifted INFP adults and my clinical experience consulting with families of gifted people for 25 years including administering and interpreting personality type indicators with families of approximately 400 gifted children.

Representative abbreviated responses to their preferences and life experiences show:

This personality type affects their learning styles by: liking to concentrate on projects, and learn with a long range vision in mind; and disliking details. They are especially interested in possibilities for people. They need teachers to be flexible and love to explore ideas, things or places. They also need to have the personal feeling of being appreciated understand concepts or situations before experiencing them. They tend not to like competition and are bored with routine. They may be slow in answering because they need to consider the many possibilities.

School experiences were greatly about their relationship with their teachers, respect and encouragement. In school, lack of confidence and social isolation was evidenced in several recollections: „I felt like an outsider. I was respected, but I wasn’t popular. „I was really fearful; terrified of school. I cried most days up through third grade. Nothing could have externally been scaring me. It was more internal disposition that I was bringing. …I was really self conscious. „I had a lot of difficult experiences. (Difficulty) forming a sense of identity for myself. „I didn’t feel there were enough people like me. „I didn’t feel popular.“

These INFPs are striving for self identity. Inquiry showed that they are high in feeling like they are impostors. Taking the MBTI gave them relief and legitimacy. Interpretation validated their right to be who they are and soothed their self concept. Subjects also had great enthusiasm for the interview process.

These INFPs described themselves as: a survivor, I believe in beauty; thoughtful, creative, SENSITIVE, loving, helpful, reflective, warm hearted, smart, a perfectionist, good friend, generous, caring, compassionate, reflective, warm hearted, loyal, kind, responsible, nice.

In response to: What are some of your personal qualities that you would like to be different?: „I wish I were more confident; weren’t so sensitive; not be as hard on myself; not so insecure; not take things personally all the time; less sensitive; a little more organized; being a procrastinator.

In interpersonal relationships, INFPs tend to make deep commitments and are concerned about relationships and harmony. The people they prize most are those who take the time to understand their values and the goals they are working toward. They had the least confidence that they are actually being helpful to other people. Males can be seen by others as too gentle, passive and may lack the qualities associated with traditional maleness.

For ways you sometimes feel misunderstood by other people, responses included: „I feel misunderstood a lot! „I could do a dissertation on that! In one way, it’s when people don’t know who I am. I guess they take me for something I’m not. „When I say what I want and people don’t hear it. „People think I’m more confident than I am. „I’m more sensitive than other people think I am. „I’m more hurt. „Why do I Always Need to Explain?“ is my theme song. „A lot of people are driven by things. I’m coming from a different perspective. It’s like the whole base there is not understood.

What are some of your recurrent difficulties in your interpersonal relationships?: Several said that they tend to be more unmerciful and severe on themselves than they are on others. „Too busy, Can’t give enough time to others. „I get really hurt; I’m sensitive. „People think I can handle it. „I don’t have as much confidence as people think I have. „I’m impatient when working with other people because I work by myself a lot. „Going off on tangents; being different; non specific; I change my mind. „I like working by myself.

In response to, „What would you secretly like to tell people about how to relate well to you,“ qualities of self concepts and interpersonal relationships were illustrated: „Be patient, allow craziness; I’ll come around. I’m processing inward. „Be honest. Do not make me a victim. „Be gentler with me. Understand me, accept me the way I am, and help me to accept myself. „Just be themselves, honest. „Listen and not prejudge things; really listen.

Responses to, How would you like people to remember you? summarize the composite of these people. Their legacies are portrayed by: „How much I loved. „As a nice person and someone who had good ideas. „That I tried. „I want people to be better because they met me, not worse. „As somebody who cared, and as somebody who people thought loved them. „As having made a difference in their life… that I’ve made a difference in the world. „Caring, empathetic, trustworthy, insightful, always seeking the truth.

In conclusion, these are deep, complex, somewhat melancholy people who are hard to understand.

INFP: The Idealist

INFP PERSONALITIES ARE USUALLY PERCEIVED AS CALM, PLEASANT, SOMEWHAT RESERVED OR EVEN shy. however, such an exterior can be deceptive – even though INFPs can be somewhat cautions, their inner flame and passion is not something to be taken lightly. people with this personality type are really affectionate, a trait not often seen in other types. this compassion can be really fervent and long-lasting – but the INFP will use it quite cautiously, directing their energies towards a few selected people or a worthy cause. idealism is the banner of INFP personalities – and they are proud of it. unfortunately, it also means that INFPs can often feel misunderstood and isolated, as they are relatively rare (only 4.3% of U.S. population).

INFP STRENGTHS
INFP strengths mostly rotate around their sensitivity and good will – these traits tend to make them popular and desirable friends, partners and associates.

» desire to meet the needs of others.
» ability to recognise and respect other people’s space.
» flexibility and versatility.
» immense capacity for love and care.
» loyalty and dedication to long term relationships.
» desire to cooperate, rather than dominate.
» sincere concern for others.
» excellent ability to express themselves.
» sensitivity and responsiveness to other people’s feelings.

INFP WEAKNESSES
unfortunately, the INFP sensitivity is a double-edged sword, potentially leading to some weaknesses as well.

» craving of praise and appreciation.
» perfectionist tendencies, sometimes resulting from self-criticism.
» extreme hostility to conflict and criticism.
» difficulties in terminating unsuccessful relationships.
» tendency to blame themselves for problems encountered along the way.
» tendency to be quite reserved and even shy.
» very emotional reaction in stressful situations.
» unwillingness to tolerate breaches of their “safe” zone.
» difficulties in punishing or criticising others.

people with the INFP personality type have a clear sense of honour, which emanates from their many different beliefs. the noble prince or princess in a mythical tale, the king’s bodyguard, the defender of the faith – these are the typical INFP images. look at one of the knights of the round table, Sir Galahad or Joan of Arc – and you will understand what heroes inspire and motivate INFPs. if someone wants to get to know an INFP, it is crucial to know what drives them, to understand their chosen cause – INFPs are able and willing to make incredible sacrifices in the name of their cause.

INFPs seek harmony in their lives – harmony of their body and mind, their emotions and intellect. there is often a subtle tragic motif seen throughout the INFP life, but it is very rare for an outsider to notice and recognise this. INFP dedication to good, noble causes forces them to defend themselves from everything they see as evil. paradoxically, it can result in INFP constantly looking at bad things over their shoulder – in contrast to their constant quest for purity.

INFP personalities tend to see things and actions from the idealistic perspective, rather than the prism of logic. they respond to beauty, morality, virtue rather than utility, effectiveness or value. INFPs can easily speak in metaphors and parables, and they also have an amazing gift of creating and interpreting symbols – for this reason, INFPs often find it natural to write and enjoy poetry. this personality type does not worship logic, unlike the NT types – from their viewpoint, logic is not always necessary. it is also likely that an INFP will not enjoy hypothetical or never-ending discussions.

regarding jobs and careers, people with the INFP personality type are quite flexible, able to adopt new ideas and new information and keen to understand and appreciate others’ feelings and unique traits. INFPs can easily find new friends among their colleagues if they want to (they will, however, maintain a psychological distance). they loathe phone calls that interrupt their workflow, and they may function just as well alone or as a team. INFPs are patient when it comes to coping with difficult situations, but they cannot stand routine work. they can make factual or logical mistakes, but their intuition will almost never be wrong where moral or ethical decisions are involved. INFP often choose careers related to religion, education, psychiatry, psychology or architecture – and do their best to avoid dealing with the business world. they are willing and able to commit to being high achievers in the academic community, sometimes falling behind at school but usually reaching much better results at the university.

furthermore, INFPs have the trait common among NF types – their aptitude for foreign languages is unmatched. INFPs also often become great writers and actors, as they can easily reflect and convey their own personalities using the fictional characters.

at home, INFP personalities radiate extraordinary dedication and commitment. they like to live in harmony and consequently do everything they can to avoid conflicts. INFPs are sensitive to other people’s feelings and there are very few things more important to them than seeing happiness in the eyes of their closest people. however, INFPs can find it difficult to reconcile the romantic and idealised notion of living with the often bleak and challenging reality. sometimes INFPs can even avoid seeking the attention of another person, worried that they will be hurt later. furthermore, INFPs generally prefer expressing their interest indirectly.

INFP home is their fortress. as parents, they will always fiercely defend their closest people and remain dedicated to improving the wellbeing of the entire family. INFPs convey everlasting devotion, compassion, and flexibility; therefore, it is very easy to live with this type of people. INFPs do not care much about routine rituals and they often allow someone else to make daily decisions on their behalf – but only as long as those decisions are consistent with their value system. if this is not the case, then there is a very little chance the INFP will budge. INFP will do everything to defend their moral values and persuade others to agree with them.

as for the romantic relationships, it is likely that INFP will have more difficulties than any other personality type. INFP is a relatively rare personality type and consequently few other types share the INFP approach to life. according to INFPs, “life is a very serious thing”. regularly fighting in one of their personal crusades, INFP may slightly complicate the relationship with their chosen partner if they are not careful.

INFPs may also often retreat into their “hermit” state (this personality type can easily switch between the two states), withdrawing from the world and getting lost in their deep thoughts – their partner may then need to spend quite a lot of effort to energise and “awaken” the INFP. ironically, this task is most easily handled by the opposite ENTJ and ESTJ types, who are well entrenched in the real world and are often driven by far more pragmatic goals than INFP. both the ENTJ, commanding their inner forces and leading them towards a distant goal, and the ESTJ, with their solid, reliable, and traditional management skills, can provide the INFP with a stable ground and direction that can be lost so easily in one of their crusades.

INFP personalities are extremely creative, innovative and goal-oriented. they radiate a soft and pleasant aura of humour, but it is not always easy to get to know them on a deeper level mainly due to many reasons outlined above. INFP are also very intuitive listeners, with a clearly expressed intention to learn more about the other person – this is clearly recognisable and consequently INFPs find it very easy to become valued friends and trustees. in addition, most INFPs have the ability to see even the slightest hint of good in other people. in INFP eyes, even the most revolting person will have something worthy of respect or, at the very least, sympathy.

INFP Personal Growth

What does Success mean to an INFP?

INFPs are creative, sensitive souls who take their lives very seriously. They seek harmony and authenticity in their relationships with others. They value creativity, spirituality, and honoring the individual self above all else. They are very tuned into inequity and unfairness against people, and get great satisfaction from conquering such injustices. An INFP is a perfectionist who will rarely allow themselves to feel successful, although they will be keenly aware of failures. INFPs also get satisfaction from being in touch with their creativity. For the INFP, personal success depends upon the condition of their closest relationships, the development of their creative abilities, and the continual support of humanity by serving people in need, fighting against injustice, or in some other way working to make the world a better place to be.

Allowing Your INFP Strengths to Flourish

As an INFP, you have gifts that are specific to your personality type that aren’t natural strengths for other types. By recognizing your special gifts and encouraging their growth and development, you will more readily see your place in the world, and how you can better use your talents to achieve your dreams.

Nearly all INFPs will recognize the following characteristics in themselves. They should embrace and nourish these strengths:

  • Highly creative, artistic and spiritual, they can produce wonderful works of art, music and literature. INFPs are natural artists. They will find great satisfaction if they encourage and develop their artistic abilities. That doesn’t mean that an INFP has to be a famous writer or painter in order to be content. Simply the act of „creating“ will be a fulfilling source of renewal and refreshment to the INFP. An INFP should allow himself or herself some artistic outlet, because it will add enrichment and positive energy to their life.
  • They’re more spiritually aware than most people, and are more in touch with their soul than others. Most INFPs have strong Faith. Those that don’t may feel as if they’re missing something important. An INFP should nourish their faith.
  • INFPs are very aware of social injustice, and empathize with the underdog. Their empathy for the underdog and hyper-awareness of social injustice makes them extremely compassionate and nurturing towards disadvantaged members of our society. INFPs will feel most useful and fulfilled when they are fighting to help people who have been misfortunate in our society. They may be teachers, ministers, writers, counsellors or psychologists, but they will most likely all spend extra time trying to help people with special problems. An INFP can find a tremendous amount of satisfaction by enacting some kind of social change that will help the underdog.
  • They’re usually good listeners who genuinely want to hear about someone’s problems, and genuinely want to help them. This makes them outstanding counsellors, and good friends. An INFP may find great satisfaction from volunteering as a counselor.
  • They accept and value people as individuals, and are strongly egalitarian. They believe that an individual has the right to be themself, without having their attitudes and perspectives brought under scrutiny. Accordingly, they have a great deal of tolerance and acceptance dealing with people who might encounter negative judgment from society in general. They can see something positive in everyone. They believe in individuals. If they give themselves the opportunity, an INFP can become a much-needed source of self-esteem and confidence for people who cannot find it on their own. In this way, they can nurture a „sick soul“ back to health.
  • Usually deep and intelligent, they’re able to grasp difficult concepts with relative ease. They usually do quite well academically, and will find that educating their minds nourishes their need to think deeply.

INFPs who have developed their Extraverted iNtuition to the extent that they can perceive the world about them objectively and quickly will find that they enjoy these special gifts:

  • They will have a great deal of insight into people’s characters. They will quickly and thoroughly understand where a person is coming from by assessing their motives and feelings. These well-developed INFP individuals make outstanding psychologists (such as Isabel Briggs Myers herself) and counselors. They might also be great fiction writers, because they’re able to develop very complex, real characters.
  • They will quickly understand different situations, and quickly grasp new concepts. They will find that they’re able to do anything that they put their mind to, although they may not find it personally satisfying. Things may seem to come easily to these INFPs. Although they’re able to conquer many different kinds of tasks and situations, these INFPs will be happiest doing something that seems truly important to them. Although they may find that they can achieve the „mainstream“ type of success with relative ease, they are not likely to find happiness along that path, unless they are living their lives with authenticity and depth.
  • The INFP who augments their strong, internal value system (Introverted Feeling) with a well-developed intuitive way of perceiving the world (Extraverted iNtuition) can be a powerful force for social change. Their intense values and strong empathy for the underprivileged, combined with a reliable and deeply insightful understanding of the world that we live in, creates an individual with the power to make a difference (such as Mother Teresa – an INFP).

Potential Problem Areas

With any gift of strength, there is an associated weakness. Without „bad“, there would be no „good“. Without „difficult“, there would be no „easy“. We value our strengths, but we often curse and ignore our weaknesses. To grow as a person and get what we want out of life, we must not only capitalize upon our strengths, but also face our weaknesses and deal with them. That means taking a hard look at our personality type’s potential problem areas.

INFPs are rare, intelligent, creative beings with many special gifts. I would like for the INFP to keep in mind some of the many positive things associated with being an INFP as they read some of this more negative material. Also remember that the weaknesses associated with being an INFP are natural to your type. Although it may be depressing to read about your type’s weaknesses, please remember that we offer this information to enact positive change. We want people to grow into their own potential, and to live happy and successful lives.

Most of the weaker characteristics that are found in INFPs are due to their dominant Feeling function overshadowing the rest of their personality. When the dominant function of Introverted Feeling overshadows everything else, the INFP can’t use Extraverted iNtuition to take in information in a truly objective fashion. In such cases, an INFP may show some or all of the following weaknesses in varying degrees:

  • May be extremely sensitive to any kind of criticism
  • May perceive criticism where none was intended
  • May have skewed or unrealistic ideas about reality
  • May be unable to acknowledge or hear anything that goes against their personal ideas and opinions
  • May blame their problems on other people, seeing themselves as victims who are treated unfairly
  • May have great anger, and show this anger with rash outpourings of bad temper
  • May be unaware of appropriate social behavior
  • May be oblivious to their personal appearance, or to appropriate dress
  • May come across as eccentric, or perhaps even generally strange to others, without being aware of it
  • May be unable to see or understand anyone else’s point of view
  • May value their own opinions and feelings far above others
  • May be unaware of how their behavior affects others
  • May be oblivious to other people’s need
  • May feel overwhelmed with tension and stress when someone expresses disagreement with the INFP, or disapproval of the INFP
  • May develop strong judgments that are difficult to unseed against people who they perceive have been oppressive or suppressive to them
  • Under great stress, may obsess about details that are unimportant to the big picture of things
  • Under stress, may obsessively brood over a problem repeatedly
  • May have unreasonable expectations of others
  • May have difficulty maintaining close relationships, due to unreasonable expectations

Explanation of Problems

Nearly all of the problematic characteristics described above can be attributed in various degrees to the common INFP problem of only taking in data that justifies their personal opinions. INFPs are usually very intense and sensitive people, and feel seriously threatened by criticism. They are likely to treat any point of view other than their own as criticism of their own perspective. If the INFP does not learn how to deal with this perceived criticism, the INFP will begin to shut out the incoming information that causes them pain. This is a natural survivalistic technique for the INFP personality. The main driver to the INFP personality is Introverted Feeling, whose purpose is to maintain and honor an intensely personal system of values and morals. If an INFP’s personal value system is threatened by external influences, the INFP shuts out the threatening data in order to preserve and honor their value system. This is totally natural, and works well to protect the individual psyche from getting hurt. However, the INFP who exercises this type of self-protection regularly will become more and more unaware of other people’s perspectives, and thus more and more isolated from a real understanding of the world that they live in. They will always find justification for their own inappropriate behaviors, and will always find fault with the external world for problems that they have in their lives. It will be difficult for them to maintain close personal relationships because they will have unreasonable expectations, and will be unable to accept blame.

Its not an uncommon tendency for the INFP to look to the external world primarily for information that will support their ideas and values. However, if this tendency is given free reign, the resulting INFP personality is too self-centered to be happy or successful. Since the INFP’s dominant function to their personality is Introverted Feeling, they must balance this with an auxiliary Extraverted iNtuitive function. The INFP takes in information via Extraverted iNtuition. This is also the INFP’s primary way of dealing with the external world. If the INFP uses Extraverted iNtuition only to serve the purposes of Introverted Feeling, then the INFP is not using Extraversion effectively at all. As a result, the INFP does not take in enough information about the external world to have a good sense of what’s going on. They see nothing but their own perspective, and deal with the world only so far as they need to in order to support their perspective. These individuals usually come across as selfish and unrealistic. Depending on how serious the problem is, they may appear to be anything from „a bit eccentric“ to „way out there“. Many times other people are unable to understand or relate to these people.

Solutions

To grow as an individual, the INFP needs to focus on opening their perspective to include a more accurate picture of what is really going on in the world. In order to be in a position in which the INFP is able to perceive and consider data that is foreign to their internal value system, the INFP needs to know that its value system is not threatened by the new information. The INFP must consciously tell himself/herself that an opinion that does not concede with their own is not an indictment of their entire character.

The INFP who is concerned with personal growth will pay close attention to their motivation for taking in information. Do they take in information to better understand a situation or concept? Or, do they take in information to support a personal idea or cause? At the moment when something is perceived, is the INFP concerned with twisting that perception to fit in with their personal values? Or is she/he concerned with absorbing the information objectively? To achieve a better understanding of the external world, the INFP should try to perceive information objectively, before fitting it into their value system. They should consciously be aware of their tendency to discard anything that doesn’t agree with their values, and work towards lessening this tendency. They should try to see situations from other people’s perspectives, without making personal judgments about the situations or the other people’s perspectives. In general, they should work on exercising their iNtuition in a truly Extraverted sense. In other words, they should use iNtuition to take in information about the world around them for the sake of understanding the world, rather than take in information to support their own conclusions. The INFP who successfully perceives things objectively may be quite a powerful force for positive change.

Living Happily in our World as an INFP

Some INFPs have difficulty fitting into our society. Their problems are often a result of an unawareness of appropriate social behavior, an unawareness of how they come across to others, or unrealistic expectations of others. Any one of these three issues stem from using Extraverted iNtuition in a diminished manner. An INFP who takes in information for the sake of understanding the world around them, rather than one who takes in information only to support their own ideas, will have a clearer, more objective understanding of how society values social behaviors and attitudes. He or she will also be more aware of how they are perceived by others, and will have more realistic expectations for others‘ behavior within a relationship. Such well-adjusted INFPs will fit happily into our society.

Unless you really understand Psychological Type and the nuances of the various personality functions, it’s a difficult task to suddenly start to use iNtuition in an Extraverted direction. It’s difficult to even understand what that means, much less to incorporate that directive into your life. With that in mind, I am providing some specific suggestions that may help you to begin exercising your Extraverted iNtuition more fully:

  • Take care to notice what people look like in different social situations. Look at their hair, their skin, their makeup (or lack thereof), their clothes, the condition of their clothes, their shoes, their facial expressions. Don’t compare others to your own appearance, or pass judgment on their appearance, simply take in the information.
  • Think of a situation in your life in which you weren’t sure how to behave. Now try to understand how one or two other people would see the situation. Don’t compare their behavior to your own, i.e. „she would know better than me what to do“, or „why is it so easy for her, but so hard for me“. Rather, try to understand how they would see the situation. Would it be seen as a problem, or as an opportunity? Would it be taken seriously or lightly? Try to determine their point of view without passing judgment or comparing it to your own.
  • When having a conversation with a friend or relative, dedicate at least half of your time to talking about the other person. Concentrate on really understanding where that person is coming from with their concerns. Ask questions.
  • Think of the people who are closest to you. As you think of each person, tell yourself „this person has their own life going on, and they are more concerned with their own life than they are with mine.“ Remember that this doesn’t mean that they don’t care about you. It’s the natural order of things. Try to visualize what that person is doing right now. What things are they encountering, what thoughts are they having? Don’t pass judgment, or compare their situation to your own.
  • Try to identify the personality type of everyone that you come into contact with for any length of time.

Ten Rules to Live By to Achieve INFP Success

  1. Feed Your Strengths! Encourage your natural artistic abilities and creativity. Nourish your spirituality. Give yourself opportunities to help the needy or underprivileged.
  2. Face Your Weaknesses! Realize and accept that some traits are strengths and some are weaknesses. Facing and dealing with your weaknesses doesn’t mean that you have to change who you are, it means that you want to be the best You possible. By facing your weaknesses, you are honoring your true self, rather than attacking yourself.
  3. Express Your Feelings. Don’t let unexpressed emotions build up inside of you. If you have strong feelings, sort them out and express them, Don’t let them build up inside you to the point where they become unmanageable!
  4. Listen to Everything. Try not to dismiss anything immediately. Let everything soak in for awhile, then apply judgment.
  5. Smile at Criticism. Remember that people will not always agree with you or understand you, even if they value you greatly. Try to see disagreement and criticism as an opportunity for growth. In fact, that is exactly what it is.
  6. Be Aware of Others. Remember that there are 15 other personality types out there who see things differently than you see them. Try to identify other people’s types. Try to understand their perspectives.
  7. Be Accountable for Yourself. Remember that YOU have more control over your life than any other person has.
  8. Be Gentle in Your Expectations. You will always be disappointed with others if you expect too much of them. Being disappointed with another person is the best way to drive them away. Treat others with the same gentleness that you would like to be treated with.
  9. Assume the Best. Don’t distress yourself by assuming the worst. Remember that a positive attitude often creates positive situations.
  10. When in Doubt, Ask Questions! Don’t assume that the lack of feedback is the same thing as negative feedback. If you need feedback and don’t have any, ask for it.
