Stromsparend, fingernagelgross und mit der Leistung eines Supercomputers: Der Computerkonzern Intel ist mit dem Prototyp eines Computerchips mit 80 Rechenkernen in eine neue Dimension vorgestossen.
Der Prozessor sei «kaum grösser als ein Fingernagel» und verbrauche mit 62 Watt weniger als viele heutige herkömmliche Chips, berichtete das Unternehmen am Sonntag. Die Rechenleistung liege im Teraflop-Bereich – also bei Milliarden Rechenoperationen pro Sekunde.
Sie könnte in Zukunft zum Beispiel realistischere Erlebnisse in Videospielen oder bei der Heimunterhaltung erlauben. Allerdings handle es sich bei dem Superchip ausdrücklich um einen Prototyp, den Intel so nicht auf den Markt bringen werde. Die Forschung liefere aber wichtige Erkenntnisse für kommende Prozessorgenerationen.
